This stool may have been for a child stepping up to wash their hands or a gardener weeding the lettuce. It may even been a milking stool since its past is unknown. However. It has a great future dressing up your country style home or helping a child learn to be independent. My resident expert. SAB, thinks it is made from fir and it was valued enough by a previous owner to fix it when a crack appeared in one of the legs. The crack is still on the inside of one of the legs but does not affect the strength of the stool. It was painted blue but the color is faded and chipped on the sides. I think the tole painting was originally pink but time has faded it as well. One of the wooden plugs used ... moreto cover the screw hole on one side is missing. Antique Primitive Painted Settle Bucket Bench 19th Century from NH
This is a 19th century country settle in beautiful blue/ green paint. The surface is nicely crackled showing the age and wear you would expect. The settle was typically used as a bench seat to be used in front of the fireplace. The high back would keep away the draft from your back and keep the fire's warmth around your body. The sides have great boot jack cutouts. The dimensions are 43h x 36w x 12d. The height of the seat is just under 18 inches. Judging from the smaller size. This was likely a child's settle in the mid 1800's. The surface of the seat is a bit more worn and most of the paint is gone, showing a darker wood patina. There is also some evidence on the seat that this piece may have been used as a bucket bench as well. The wood used to make the frame is really chunky, 1 inch thick boards. The back boards are securely ... morenailed and not painted. This bench is very strong, well made, with no issues whatsoever.
