A very rare. Signed piece of Hawaiian Furniture: an upholstered carved footstool on four beautifully carved, winged ball and claw feet, made by James Armstrong, Honolulu, where he had his Hawaiian Cabinetmaker Business. Only a few of these footstools were made by Armstrong, of which none were for sale. The few were given as Christmas presents by Armstrong to his best customers. On the bottom of the stool are remnants of an old label, showing'Formly' and part of the word'Queen' plus parts of other words. This stool was given as a Christmas present to Queen Liliuokalani by Armstrong, and measures 13 x 9 x 5 1/2 inches, with rare original fabric covering the top(showing one hundred plus years of wear) The stool has its original finish, and has not been refinished or restored, and is a jewel of workmanship and proportion. An underside ... morerail has'J Armstrong' stamped mark, and is missing two small underside corner glue-blocks, which do not affect the integrity or sturdiness of the stool. A similar stool by Armstrong is pictured in Irving Jenkins' 350 page book: Hawaiian Furniture and Hawaii's Cabinetmakers" The author signed book shown here will be included with the stool. Click on image to see all large photos. Armstrong won a Gold Medal of Excellence for his furniture in the Hawaiian Pavilion at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. Antique Cast Iron Industrial Adjustable Swing Arm Stool (wall or table mount)
I will start by saying that I aquired(2) of these industrial stool sometime back at a local sale that was selling some items that had be salvage from some old industrial plant. This auction is for one of these stools and the other is listed in a seperate auction. This is a large cast iron swing arm stool with what looks like a maple seat. This stool would have mounted either on the wall. A large table leg, or on a large piece of industrial equipement. It has a screw up adjustable seat and a swivel bracket on the swing arm so it could be positioned in several positions. The seat is 11" in diameter and 1 1/2" thick. The adjustable height of the seat is that it could be adjusted up to a height of at least(6) inches. The swing arm and wall or table mount bracket combined are(14) inches long. There is no damage to this item. It has a ... morefew specks of white paint on it and there is some minor rust specks here and there. The only thing I have done to this stool is clean the dust off and put a little wood cleaner on the seat to clean it up. Nice old hard to find industrial age swing arm stool that has a lot of uses. This is a nice american jacobean style foot stool or bench in walnut circa 1880. The foot stool has nice lathe turned legs with lathe turned stretchers and ball feet. The foot stool is a good size that measures 28" long. 18" tall, and 18" deep. The walnut frame is 15 1/2" tall from the floor to the bottom of the upholstered top. The upholstery is what came on it when I got it. It is not new but is in good condition aith only a few spots that more than likely be cleaned. It is very usable as it is. For the sake of full discloser the stool is in overall good condition with only the slightest movement at the glued joints. No need for repair. Email with any questions.
