Vintage Industrial Wood Metal Adjustable Drafting Stool Antique Operator Stool
This is a stool loaded with charactor! I was told it was an artist or drafting table but also told it was a operator or engineers stool. Measuring approx 31.5" without raising it up(this includes the high of the metal pad( on the bottom which was obviously not original to the piece but could be removed) Legs measure approx 19.5" across(at bottom) and stool seat is just over 14" in diameter. I wish I could read the original tag on the stool(see pictures. Tag is slightly better than pictured but hard to read) I can read the word mahogany on the tag but there is also a word preceeding it which I cannot. I am having trouble reading anything inside the company insignia. It appears to be a person standing in the center but again, I am unsure. I would LOVE to know where it came from but have come up with no results. The leather cover ... moreon the seat(seat is not solid. It is a wooden rim with hollow middle) is tattered around edges. It appears to be a blue type fabric underneath it, looking from the underside I do not believe it is original. The mechanics of the chair appear to be in working order. Chair raises and lowers with a bit of play. The wooden arched foot rest has 3 spots of cracking but it is solid and this appears to only be through the outer layer of wood with the deepest of the cracks less than half way through the wood. It does not seem to affect the integrity at all. One of the wooden plugs on the bottom of the legs(covering an old flat head screw) is gone, the other 3 are in tact. Has some rust, a tad wobbly because all four legs do not touch the floor at the same time, but sturdy.may be able to adjust that.not sure. The metal ring that goes on the bottom legs is missing, but the chair/stool is very stable. With the seat down, chair is 34 1/2" tall. Extra heavy and solid stool. It is beautiful! Very clean! I am not an expert but from my eyes to yours. I would have to guess that the horizontal pieces of wood feel very handmade. The definitely are not mass produced. Each on has its own shape. The same yet different. The cast iron has a multitude of different screws. It is very, very solid when it is screwed down all of the way, 25 1/2" but gets wobbly the further up you take it. Goes up to 29 1/2" Pick up is always welcome. Vintage industrial bent tubular steel. Fully adjustable laboratory or drafting stool with wood(possibly maple) saddle seat and backrest. Broad, squatty base with oversized heel ring. Appears to be in good, used condition. Wear and patina to all surfaces. Wood seat and backrest were protected by a cushion set and are in excellent condition. Some staining to the rear of back rest and bottom of seat where the cushion did not cover(see photos) Threaded seat post shows some wear in the area of the center threads where the chair was most frequently positioned. This is a very good used industrial stool with adjustable legs and a tall back. Measurements were taken with the legs in one of the lower positions so the seat and back will go taller than the photos show. Entirely made of steel and has been re-painted at some point and the seat is a wood composition style and it does not swivel. Early industrial drafting chair. Made of metal with a bent wood seat and backrest. The backrest has a wing nut and is height and pitch adjustable. The seat is stationary and has a width of 16 1/4" We were unable to find a label or manufacturer marking on this chair. It is similar to the Toledo chairs. Chair is 21" tall at it's lowest seat height and 24" tall at it highest seat height. The base has the original paint and the foot rests are stationary. Wood seat and backrest are in good condition there is a chip on the back side of the back rest. Please see the pictures. The back rest may be taken off for safe shipping. This is an original c. 1920's vintage american industrial"posture line" factory office typist chair. Please refer to pictures as they are a big part of the description. Chairs are in very good structual condition. Walnut chair seat and back are in great condition in relation to these chairs age. Metal shows surface rust as pictured, but I have decided to leave them in the original condition with the green paint as some prefer the patina that comes with age. Original rubber feet with the words"Pussyfoot" and"Toledo Metal Co. are imprinted into the rubber. These chairs fabricated around 1922-25 ... moreby the toledo metal furniture co. toledo, oh. the factory office chair was made according to the recommendations of the american posture league of new york city. its use brings the pelvis in right relation to the spine, so that one's weight is distributed over the pelvis and thighs. nearly all parts of the chair are comprised of steel, cold rolled and die formed. the base is rigidly braced and has long wearing quality. the braces which make the base rigid are held in place by retainers set inside the"u" shaped legs, so that there is no pivoting motion to weaken the construction. the back wire or spring support is made of spring steel and yields pleasantly to the pressure of the body. four bolts with large size wing nuts hold the seat and"spider" in the base of the chair. adjustment of height is accomplished by removing the wing nuts and bolts, setting at proper heights and replacing the bolts. no tools are necessary to make this adjustment, which is three inches on each chair by half inch steps. the seat should always be level, which is assured by seeing that the same number of holes appear above or below the brace on each leg of the large steel channel

I actually used it for some time as a computer chair and it was surprisingly comfortable, albeit a bit heavy duty! the legs are squat and very sturdy solid steel, as shown in the picture there is a strange square skirt along the bottom of the seat, i am unsure of its purpose. Also, the back has a butterfly screw and is able to be adjusted higher and lower t fit the individuals back height. Shadowline Co. lingerie was their manufacturing bisusness) used these chairs in their company, but have been out of business for years. Chairs have been stored all this time. My father worked there in the 1960's and 70's. These chairs fabricated around 1922-25 by The Toledo Metal Furniture Co. This factory office chair was made according to the recommendations of the American Posture League of New York City. Its use brings the pelvis in right relation to the spine. So that one's weight is distributed over the pelvis and thighs. Nearly all parts of the chair are comprised of steel, cold rolled and die formed. The base is rigidly braced and has long wearing quality. The braces which make the base rigid are held in place by retainers set inside the"u" shaped legs, so that there is no pivoting motion to weaken the construction. It was all painted black at one time but the seat has most of the paint worn of f the seat. It was obviously designed to stand up to a heavy workload. But the stool has seen its share of use over the years. There are small saw marks in a couple places on the seat edge. The seat has apparently come loose at some time in the past and been reattached with L-brackets. Although this may not be original, it is very sturdy. The foot ring does have a split in it. These things can be observed in the photos. The chair could be restored by a skilled woodworker. Approximately 28” tall x 15” square. Please examine the photos closely and email any questions. Four wheel 1940s Vintage Machine Age Drafting Stool with adjustable height wooden swivel seat. This stool design is very uncommon. The Manufacture and age of this stool is unknown. Stool does not have any manufacturers marks. The seat is not original to the stool but is from a similar style stool. Underside of seat shows extra screw holes and the imprint of a larger mounting plate(see photos) Underside of seat is stamped with the letters USBPR(US Bureau of Public Roads) The USBPR began in 1915 and was eventually replaced by the Federal Highway Administration in 1966. For auction is an amazing vintage industrial shop stool with a cadmium red painted steel base and a solid oak seat. This stool has it all; beautiful combination of materials. Wonderful primitive industrial design, fantastic details, and perfect patina. It has been thoroughly cleaned and detailed. The seat height is adjustable and swivels freely. The base, while full of odd angles, is solid and sits flush to the floor. The joints are held together with buck rivets, though two have been replaced with slotted bolts near the top. The wood seat has a small chunk missing near the edge, but it has worn smooth and is free of splinters. Due it's age and use, the seat does wobble some and tilts slightly, but it is still comfortable to sit in. The finish is worn and covered in tiny paint spots, but is all the more beautiful for it.
