ANTIQUE c.1920s ART DECO BEAUX ARTS BENCH VANITY STOOL SEVILLE STUDIOS, GILDED
This is a very rare piece and may be one-of-a-kind. This art deco style bench. Circa 1920's, was made by Seville(Metal Art) Studios, Inc. Creators of Beau-Metal Art Objects" of Cleveland. Ohio. The company was well-known for its metal works at that time. Pieces consisted primarily of decorative items and small pieces of furniture. As a point of reference regarding their pieces in todays market, a small, bronzed cast-iron table made by this company recently sold at the on-line antique store, 1stDibs. And was listed for $3500. This piece is made of cast iron. I believe the cast iron originally had been gilded(covered in a thin layer of gold) Which was popular in the 20's. When I discovered the piece, it was covered with rust( see last two pictures) and the only remnants of the original finish were a few minuscule places that had ... morea gold. Patinated look. The upholstered seat sported a cracked and torn, yellow vinyl covering. Underneath this vinyl, I found the original fabric of faded(and shredded) red velvet. The mark"S11" is cast on each leg. Seville's coded makers' mark. The original metal ID tag(see picture) is still affixed to the underside of the seat. No attempt was made to sand. Or restore, the cast iron beyond soaking it in a solution of white vinegar and water to dissolve the worst of the rust from the surface. This left the naturally-aged uneven and pitted surfaces. The cast iron base was painted with a single layer of gold leaf paint. The paint used contains real gold(paint sells for $10 per ounce) and was used as an alternative to using gold leaf sheets. The seat was reupholstered with new padding and covered with a dusty-rose/red fabric woven with golden dragonflies-a popular decorative icon during the 1920's. Intending to keep the bench myself. I did the work. Because there is little work required to recover the seat, one could have a professional reupholster it inexpensively, if desired. Price Reduced! Beautiful antique triple mirror vanity and matching upholstered stool. This walnut vanity has been refinished and has all new hardware and wheels. Interior of drawers are very clean. Hinged triple mirrors have all been replaced and have no scratches. The mirror easily slides securely into the back of the vanity. Measuring approximately 46" wide by 67" high and 18" deep. It has six drawers that open and close smoothly. There are a couple of VERY light scratches on the top of the vanity. This is an antique cast iron bench with dark forest green velvet upholstery. It has been reupholstered at some point and the fabric is in very good condition. Looks clean, does not have any tears or holes, the tacks that attach the fabric to the wooden seat are all intact and in good condition, and the trim is tightly woven with little to no obvious wear. The seat is heavy solid wood that seems sturdy. There are some age-related cracks in it that don't seem to weaken the seat at all. The cast iron legs are firmly attached with screws, and they are in very good condition with some minor scuffing and wear to the gold finish. Nothing is broken or missing. The bench seems a little high to be used as an ottoman. But I've seen others list it as one and that's what the antique dealer who found this thought it was. I just conditioned the wood before taking photos so it looks shinier than it really is since it was still soaking up the conditioner. I believe this is an all original antique bench or foot stool made by Sikes Chair company. I think the wood is Mahogany and I believe the leather to be the original seat cover but I'm no expert. I found very little info on this. In fact I found no info on the piece it's self. The limited info I did find was on the history of Sikes Chair company. The short version of what I know is that in 1916 Sikes chair company resumed business in Buffalo. NY. Then went out of business in 1919. Only to buy Cutler Desk Company and operated under the Sikes Cutler Desk Corp until going bankrupt in 1929. The Sikes Company resumed production in 1933 and continued to produce furniture until 1956. there more history in between ... morethe times listed where the company moved locations and operated under different names. However, based on the above info I'd date this bench/ stool either 1916-1919 or 1933-1956. Anyway you look at it this is wonderful and unique piece of American history. Just acquired out of an estate this week. We are able to offer this original, early 1900's era ~ ART NOUVEAU FIGURAL MAIDEN CAST WROUGHT IRON BENCH ~. It has a wonderful look, and the three dimensional figural design is on all four sides of the legs. It has a beautiful young woman with long flowing hair with an elegant open air pierced design. I would imagine that the gold velvet seat was recovered in the 1960's era and it does show some expected wear. The cast iron is in nice condition with no breaks or repairs. There is some expected wear to the paint, but should be a fairly easy repaint if desired. The bench measures 25 inches wide by 19 inches tall by 13 inches deep. This beautiful organ or piano bench was made in England. Most likely in the late 1800s, possibly very early 1900s. It is made of solid wood, which I believe to be mahogany. This beautiful piano bench was made in England. Most likely in the late 1800s, possibly very early 1900s. It is made of solid wood, which I believe to be mahogany. Here is a terrific early twentieth or perhaps even late nineteenth century older well made wicker desk or vanity with chair. This particular set is painted white and the old paint is layered and somewhat worn but it is overall basically clean with both this desk and chair in very nice condition with very little if any noticible breakage to the wicker. And with the rush seat intact and strong. This desk and chair make for a sturdy work station offering so many different decorating possibilities. This desk stands 35 inches tall to the top of the two wicker backets on the back corners and has a surface height of 29 inches. The desk measures 28 inches wide by 17 inches front to back. The two baskets each measure 9 1/2 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches front to back and 6 inches tall.
