Completely restored and now a beautiful bench, settee, chaise, sofa, etc. Marked 1840 on inside of one leg(see photo 7) this piece has been sandblasted and repainted in classic off white/ivory/cream, and the custom upholstery is brand new in a gorgeous smoky charcoal velvet. This is an Athol Machine Co. bench vise. Athol Machine Co. operated from 1868 to about 1930. In Athol, Massachusetts. They later became Athol Machine& Foundry Co. and still later became Starrett's Athol Vise. It is Model# 69 and shows the# mark and the makers mark on the sides. The vise is 9 3/4" long when closed. It is 4 1/2" high. The jaws are 2 7/8" wide and they close tight. The base is 2 1/2" wide and has a grooved slot. 3/8" wide. I believe this groove would slide over a bench-mounted through-bolt. Or"post" that would lock or stabilize the vise to your bench. There is no rust. But there is use-wear, pitting and nicks to the iron, consistent with a used tool of this age. The jaws and handle are clean, and move freely and easily. The handle bar does have a slight bend to it. Jaws will open up ... moreapproximately 4" wide. Bolt it down and use it tomorrow. Rare Antique Cast Iron Legs Briggs Piano Organ Stool Bench
Made by the Briggs Patent Portable Ottoman Portfolio Piano Stool- Patented April 28th. 1868 and Aug 31st, 1869. Briggs' Manufactory of Portable. Patent Piano Stools- This business was commended in town, in a small way, by Joshua Briggs, in 1862. He made, at old jobs, one dozen of piano-stools in 1863, accupying the basement of Robert Day's shop, near'Wilder's Manufactory, North Peterborough. In the spring of 1864 he rented the second story and attic of'Brennan's Building, in the village, and continued them until the whole building was too limited for his vastly increased business, when he purchased the saw-mill of Mark Wilder, and erected for his manufactory, in the summer of 1873, his present large and commodius buildings. The progress of his business was gradual, from making a dozen piano-stools by himself, as in ... more1862, 63' and then with hiring one or two hands a part of the time, to his present condition. He now employs, when the business is good, from twenty-five to thirty hands in the shop, and at the same time hires all his iron-work, castings, screws, etc. done outside. Mr Briggs has secured five several patents on his piano-stools; two on the screw style, two on the ottoman style, one on the portable back. The Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics' Association, Boston, in September, 1869, awarded to him a diploma and honorable mention of his piano-stools. In September, 1871, at the New England Fair at Lowell, Mass, a silver medal was awarded him for his portable piano-stools. Overall good condition. Ornate cast iron legs. Wooden painted frame shows some minor wear and paint loss. Hinges appear to have been replaced. Offered for auction with a 3-DAY LISTING an exceptional"RARE ANTIQUE VINTAGE SMALL CAST IRON STOOL BENCH circa 1900-1920' It is left to the imagination whether part of the cast iron work represents anthropomorphic figures or something else. The stretcher has a nice twisted rope design. The seat covering is old vinyl with canvas backing. The eight tacks around the seat edge appear to be bronze or copper and the corner tacks are molded to conform to the corner edges. The glossy paint is chipped in some areas exposing white enamel as possibly the original color. The vinyl upholstery is secured with old tacks. Although, there also appears to be a previous covering under the vinyl with old tacks. The dimensions: Height.17" Width.14" Depth.12" and weighs approx. 17 Lbs. Nice antique miniature cast iron bench vise. Everything works and the handle slides up& down just like full sized bench vice. Marked in three spots. On one side of channel is Made In U.S.A. on the other side of channel is what looks like a square and the number 12. On one side of the sliding clamp is what looks like number 126 or 26. Size is 3 1/2" long x 3 1/2" high x 1" wide. Opens up to 11/4" any further and it would come off screw. Condition is typical of old cast iron with age and grime patina.
