ANTIQUE CAST IRON 6" INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENT METAL LATHE METALWORKING WOOD BENCH
Antique Working 6" by 22" heavy cast iron metal lathe that can and was being used for woodworking. The cast iron is 3/4" in the thickest area and is very heavy. This lathe has the chamfered bed and shows that this is a metal lathe. The headstock and tailstock lock down against the chamfers to get precision alignment. These lathes are called instrument lathes. Attached is a picture of a bench speed lathe from the 1907 Fairbanks catalog which. While not quite identical, is very similar to this one. As you can see it was sold with Just the countershaft and faceplate so the lathe is not really missing The cross slide/compound. A cross slide wood was a useful accessory that would make your lathe more useful. When they were originally made these lathes were very useful in factories for follow up operations on parts that didn't ... moreneed the functions of more expensive engine lathes. This Lathe dates from 1890 to 1910 The company Century made the motor with cast iron engine case caps as shown and they started in 1910. I found a much longer 2" leather belt with this lathe that was 104" total length and was probably the original belt from the factory. Long belt not included. There is a belt on the lathe now that is much shorter and is 1 5/8" wide and is included. The Lathe is working and an older gentleman that has passed on was using it as a wood lathe but is a metal lathe. He put the pulleys on backwards no big deal. The pulley bearings spin perfect no noise Looks like it was well Taken care of. Measurements 6" from center of the spindle above the top of the bed and 22" long maximum distance between centers. Bed is 44" total length, The opening in the center of the lathe is 1 3/8" tool rest is 7" Top of bed is 5 3/8" wide and the feet have a nice 19th century look and measure 7 5/8" wide at bottom and taper to 5 1/2" wide at top of feet. This is an antique cast iron bench with dark forest green velvet upholstery. It has been reupholstered at some point and the fabric is in very good condition. Looks clean, does not have any tears or holes, the tacks that attach the fabric to the wooden seat are all intact and in good condition, and the trim is tightly woven with little to no obvious wear. The seat is heavy solid wood that seems sturdy. There are some age-related cracks in it that don't seem to weaken the seat at all. The cast iron legs are firmly attached with screws, and they are in very good condition with some minor scuffing and wear to the gold finish. Nothing is broken or missing. The bench seems a little high to be used as an ottoman. But I've seen others list it as one and that's what the antique dealer who found this thought it was.
