The old glowing finish is probably original, it is very well preserved with warm antique patina and lots of stains, mars and shrinkage separations for character. Waxed and buffed. All that is needed to maintain its warm luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. Solid brass coat and hat hooks, drawer pull and the well used umbrella drip pan are all original. A beveled mirror has a hint of"smoke" to show its age as well. The"sunburst" motif is dramatic on this American made furniture. VICTORIAN OAK HALL TREE Measures 75 inches high and 26 inches wide. The bench opens for storage and sturdy enough for sitting. Bench is 26 inches long and 15 inches wide. It has 2 double hooks towards top and 2 smaller hooks closer the bench. 1900 circa. I have had the hall tree for 25 years and of course. It was not new at the time. The mirror is beveled and has an issue on the right upper side(see photos) not broken but discolored as old mirrors sometimes get. Circa 1900. The monks’ bench features a peg hinge tabletop, ... morewhich is carved on the inside with a central diamond lozenge. The tabletop can be adjusted to act as a backrest or a tabletop. Below, the back is attached to the base with solid turned arms. The seat is hinged and reveals a useful large storage area below for shoes or boots. The front central frame below the seat features carved lunettes, which again, is typical of the Tudor. To the front and sides of the base there are pretty inset oak panels flanked by a reeded frame. The bench stands on four turned oak legs which are connected by a central stretcher for added strength. The bench is built using peg construction. This item features a dark oak colour. As it boasts the original polish. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The back consists of four recessed floral and leaf carved panels. Flanking the panels and to the whole of the outer frame. The settle is enriched with punch work. Above these recessed back panels is a row of carved floral demi-lunes. Two shaped down swept arms are secured in place by bobbin turned spindles to the seat frame. Below the hinged seat lid. There is another row of carved demi-lunes followed by four floral carved lozenge recessed panels. Interspersed between the panels are profuse leaf carvings. There is a working lid in the centre seat.
