Antique Cast Bronze Mantua Door Knobs Escutcheons & Mortise Lock 1905
Beautiful pair of cast bronze door knobs. Escutcheons and mortise lock- no key but one can be made. Manufactured by the Reading Hardware Co. in 1905 in the German Renaissance"Mantua"pattern. Good condition- one door knob has three small round indentations visible in last photo(left knob) but not visible from the front. Door knobs have an ornate four-fold leaf design and measure 2 1/4" in diameter by 2" deep. Lock measures 4 1/4" high by 3 3/8" deep by 9/16" wide. Keyhole is 2 1/2" from case front to middle of keyhole; lock face plate measures 6 1/4" high by 1" wide; escutcheons measure 8 1/2" high by 2 1/4" wide by 1" deep. Spindle is screw type and both set screws are there. Have quantity of these door knobs which were salvaged from the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. The knobs are primarily designed for rim lock fitting having only one back plate. The spindle is the standard size 19/64" imperial) 7.5 mm(metric) this will fit most Victorian and later rim locks. The only problem can be with Georgian and very early Victorian rim locks that may have the smaller section spindle location. Pair of vintage Bakelite door knobs. Probably early 20th century. Knobs measure 2 1/2" by 1 3/4" 2" face to rear edge. Both are in very good condition with no visible damage. No gouges. Scratches or cracks in main knobs. Both have the expected hairline crack coming off the set screw hole to the end edge. Cracks does not go into the knob and the Bakelite is not coming apart from the steel insert for shaft. These cracks are usually covered by the door cover plate. Beautifully polished with great shine! Matching in size and shape. They only difference is one is the expected Bakelite dark brown with subtle speckles and the other is solid black. The same but different. Comes with steel 3/8" square shaft. Knobs do not have the set screws. Those are hardware store parts. Nice old knobs that display very well! Up for your consideration are a matching pair of beautiful 12 point glass/ crystal door knobs. The center motif is a bright star-faceted and sparkly. The metal is probably brass; need cleaning to brighten it and remove the paint. I note no large chips or cracks; there are a couple of"fleabites" on the points of one knob. With one 1/16" chip on the underside of one point. One knob is a little loose in the brass collar; a drop of glue would fix this.
