I have for sale a nice D& S company 4 star ball arrow and cobalt D& S lightning rod ball. Stand is not included. For photo purposes only. Arrow is very nice with no damage. The cobalt ball has one nice collar, the other collar is chipped way down( aluminum caps for ball are included) I believe it was chipped intentionally so that it would fit into the arrow without having to bend the top of the arrow so that it would fit. I have seen some D& S arrows that the frame was been bent by the installer to make room for the ball. The body of the ball is nice with some staining, no cracks or chips. On the top of the ball where it is embossed with the D& S logo it looks like scotch tape was on it, it extends from the collar down about an inch. It does not show up in the pictures. I will leave it up to the new owner to try and remove ... moreit if they desire. I never worried about it as it is not that noticeable. It is very difficult to get a feel for the true color with a single ball's photograph. So. I am posting a comparison photo. Below are the four balls being offered.separately. GREEN MERCURY FLAT QUILT LIGHTNING ROD BALL This quilt pattern ball has permanently installed end caps embossed GEO. F. THOMPSON LIGHTNING ROD CO. OWATONNA. MINN. This is an extremely rare color and I remember exactly where I obtained this one for my collection years ago. It came off a building west of Cleveland, Ohio, along with 4-5 other units in the same pattern and color. Having the mercury treatment made them desirable then, and even more so now. I believe this was the best condition of those removed from the building. There are just some items that you don't forget their source. It will make a great addition to any collection. The ball has the protective internal tube that helped preserve the mercury on the inside of the ball. There are about a dozen small oxidized areas of mercury on the inside of the ball that are evident on one ... moreside of the ball near the cap. I have picture this in the photo) The other side of the all has about a 7-8 small oxidized areas near the opposite cap. The ball measures 5.5" end collar to end collar. Being offered is one antique glass lightning rod ball made by the Goshen Lightning Rod Company dating back to the early 1900's. It is amethyst in color with a moon and star pattern and measures approximately 4 1/4 inches across and 5 inches end to end from the collars(openings measure 7/8" inside diameter) There is some light chipping and rough edges on the collars which is quite common on antique lightning balls. Black scorching is visible but overall in great condition for its age. Amethyst in the moon and star pattern is hard to come by. Here is an opportunity to acquire one. Vintage Old and Original Horse Weathervane and Lightning Rod Ball, Neat and Nice
Neat Old and Original Circus Horse Weathervane and Blue Milk Glass Quilt Lightning Rod Ball. Weathervane is called a Circus Horse vane because it has a belly band around the horse's middle. Weathervane is hollow bodied and made in the 1915-20's. The horse is tim metal and the front arrow is old cast iron. Weathervane measures 33 inches long. Horse measures 14 inches long.10 inches tall and about 1 1/8 inches thick. This weathervane style was very popular way back then for the roofs of Barns and old Victorian Homes. Horse was large enough to be easily seen from some distance. This one fit over a 5/8 common lightning rod-the most common rod. The blue milk glass"quilt" ball measures 5 inches wide and 5 1/2 inches tall. It will fit over the common rod or the more fancy twisted star rod. Both items look great together. Yellow Cased Plain Round Lightning Rod Ball
YELLOW CASED PLAIN ROUND LIGHTNING ROD BALL This is the very last ball left from our collection. It is a very bright yellow cased ball(two layers of glass. The inside is clear, the outer is yellow. One of the collars has typical chipping around the circumference. The other collar has.5" chip with the apex of the chip to the surface of the ball where it migrates about 1/8" onto the surface of the ball. This is a large collar plain round mold and I do have the appropriate size end caps to cover the collars. The chipping will not show since all will be covered with the caps. It will make a great addition to any collection. I also want to point out that on one side of the ball there seems to be bubbles that formed in the clear inside layer of the ball. This is in two separate areas. I can feel the inside surface and it seems that the ... moremolten glass didn't fill the mold completely. The result is that the glass is"thinner" at that point and if you hold the ball so that light shines through it. There is definitely an imperfection. It is very hard to sustain imperfections on the inside of ball that didn't happen at manufacture. In the photo below, you will see a light"oval" area to the right of the fleshy part of my thumb. It is less than a.5" in length. Directly below the"oval" bubble is a scratch on the surface of the ball which is about 1/8" in diameter. It looks like a"b-b or rock ping" The definitely scratched the glass, but, fortunately, there was no cracking involved. About.5" to the right of the"ping" is another double bubble on the inside layer of glass, giving two shade of lightness to the glass. It measures about.75" in diameter. Below is a photo of the scratch reflected in the daylight of the room where the photo was taken. Plain Round Lightning Rod Ball 4-Star Weathervane. This is an all metal arrow use on systems where a plain round ball would be mounted with end caps in the middle of the circular center of the arrow. There is a whole in the bottom and top of the circular center which takes the verticle rod of the system. Four stars are attached to the circular center. The vane is in excellent shape and appears to be all original. Originally. It appears that the stems of the stars were threaded rods that screwed in to the circular center. However, time and weather has corroded the rods and they are permanently fixed in place. I would not want to remove them for fear of breaking off the ends of the short star rods. The vane from arrow tip to tail tip measures 22" in length. Star tip to star tip in height is 9" The opening in the center is 5.25 in ... morediameter. Unusual Old Glass Lightning Rod Topper. Orange Pendant - Lightning Ball
Now this is a very interesting glass lightning rod topper in bright. Transparent orange that has spent the last 25 years or so inside as part of a local store display. This finial. Or pendant, or topper is an unusual bright orange color, sort of a mix between orange and amber. The finish appears to be applied to the glass, not mixed into it, but it is in good condition and judging by the thickness and imperfections in the glass itself, I am pretty sure this is a fairly old piece. Antique or Vintage. Kind of hard to date these, Lightning Rod/Weathervane. As you can see it has had it's years of use, the arrow does not rotate freely and will need a little work if you are intending to use this item, if not its a great piece of American art form from the past. Also as shown in the pictures the pointed top does come off, and will be off for shipping. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so unless you have questions I'll just give dimensions. The entire piece is 67" tall the arrow is 23" wide and the white ribbed ball is 4" tall. Thanks for looking!
