American Encaustic Tile Company Set of Fireplace Surround Tiles: Burgundy Floral Beautiful period tiles. Removed from a fireplace in Iowa during the early 1940s and packed away in a box ever since. The color is a beautifully transparent burgundy or claret shade of purple. The images really do not do it justice. I have tried to show them in different lights- from normal inside light to direct full sunlight. There are variations between individual tiles as visible in the images. Each tile measure 3" by 6"No cracks or chips. Crazing as typical of such tiles. Some scuffing on surfaces- remember. These came out of a functioning fireplace. Each tile is marked on the reverse: A. Antique Pottery Minton TILE THE TANNER Stoke on Trent England RARE MOHR SMITH
I am offering on Buy It Now an antique tile from Mintons China Works. This very rare find from circa 1875 consists of a cobalt and white tile from the Mohr Smith Industrial Series from Stoke on Trent. England. The tile measures 6" X 6" and 1/2" thick. This tile depicts a Tanner and his helper at work a a hide with a brick wall background. He looks like a strong layman working at his trade. The scene is very detailed and there is old English writing saying The Tanner. I have noted that this rare tile is in very good condition with minimal wear as seen in the pictures. This tile is marked on the back and has slight cement residue from use. I am selling several other tiles from this same series in varying condition. Chinese Warrior on Horseback Polychrome Roof Tile An early Chinese(or Japanese? Polychrome Roof Tile of a Warrior on Horseback. I have no idea of the date or origin. I know that many similar tiles were made in the mid-1900s based on ancient classical forms- this is very likely one of those! The color palette. The attention to details, the warrior’s fierce expression, the horse’s look of motion- all are evocative of ancient Asian sculpture. Measures 13” long x 19” wide x 4” deep. The horse and warrior are beautifully sculpted with great attention to details. There are small chips in the horse’s mane and in the fringe of the saddle(see my photos. There may be other less obvious ones which I missed. Three of the horse’s four legs have been broken at the ankle. One was glued some time earlier and two were totally detached when I purchased the ... moretile at auction- I taped them loosely in position for the photos. The oval shaped tray measures approximately 12" wide x 16" long x 1" tall. The detailed edge may or may not be sterling silver. I did not have it tested. It has its original gloss with some crazing. It does have a hairline crack through(see photos) but does not affect its displayability or useability in any way. This beauty would also look great on your bar to mix cocktails on! For sale are 5 antique Luxfer prism tiles! Each tile is 4" x 4" These have a great lavender hue to them. They came out of a building in downtown St. Louis a few years back. They are from between 1890- 1910. These were used so they are not in perfect condition. However they can still be used to make a number of things including putting them back into windows! These are really very beautiful and are not something that you can find all the time. These are all the sawtooth design. Up for auction is a pretty Art Nouveau moulded tile dating to circa 1916- possibly made by Pilkingtons? The tile is 6 inches(approx 15 cm) square. It is decorated with a large central art nouveau stylised image depicting a pink central flower& buds with associated foliage arranged to make a beautiful shape. This is surrounded by a linear green border with lines out to the 4 corners which have attractive pink flower decoration. The moulding to the tile is very subtle. But I believe it comes from the Marsden Factory- The tiles are in good condition with minimal age wear- there are a few nibbles to the edges here and there, the odd nipped corner, and some with a small amount of crazing, but this does not detract at all and is only mentioned for ebay accuracy(see photos) They really are STUNNING! This is the most striking original art nouveau tile set I have seen in design and style.
