Description Antique Solid Brass Door Knocker SANCTUARY DOOR KNOCKER as found at Durham Cathedral LION FACE or HEAD Its also very Aztec sun god in style! This is a lovely old door knocker which I believe is modelled on the large knocker at Durham Cathedral where fugitives could knock to seek refuge. I think it would be made from solid cast brass. It measures approximately 4.5 5 inches top to bottom and almost 3.5 inches across at its widest point. It is about 0.75 inches deep and weighs 218 grams. This is a good heavy working door knocker with a strong hinge which holds the knocker firmly. The knocker itself has some smooth wear to the handle. Both where it would have been held and at the back where it struck, otherwise is in good but uncleaned condition. The whole thing is patina. I scratched a little bit on the back which revealed brass. It measures 8-1/4"x6" wide. There are some spots where the metal looks eroded. I don't known if it is eroded or was poorly cast. These spots are evident on the knocker itself and in the lion's mane below his chin. It is quite dirty and there are touches of black paint in a couple of spots on the edge where it was not removed when painting. Unusual Invention. Antique Art Deco Metal Lion Door Knocker with Hidden Actuator Mechanism. Steampunk! Up for auction is an absolutely amazing example of an early Steampunk device or an invention. This is a metal head of a lion on a metal base that looks like a door knocker with a secret mechanism for operating a steam or air valve that is hidden at the back. I have never seen anything like this before and this is definitely not something that was produced in mass quantities back in the days. It must be a part of a some kind of decorative machinery system or something similar to early ornate tools. There is no makers and foundry mark on it. So it must be a very unique piece that was not intended to be sold. It is in as found condition and I did not perform any cleaning or restoration. It is hard to say when it was made, but my guess would be 1890-1910's. It is heavy and made of various metals. I believe some parts are brass or bronze. You can easily place this lion on the wall and it will be a fantastic decorative piece or a curious object for a museum of interesting antiques. The knocker itself has almost a deco or nouveau leaf or petal design that Extends on either side from a center decorative notch. The knocker is exactly the same on front and back. Ornate and gorgeous. This door knocker came from a landmark building in New York City. This piece of solid brass and has a good amount of weight and heft.
