A massive and fine pair of ANTIQUE brass fireplace andirons. Blacksmith-forged wood supports are original. The log stops. Feet, and secondary supports are all brass, just discolored from use. The only parts that are not brass are the horizontal log supports. This is an early pair. I have added a photo of the underside so that you can see that the tops are connected by a rod through the log stop and base. You will note that the rod bottom is peened or flattened with a hammer. This is a true indicator of age. Later 19th century andirons will have a rod that extends through the base with threads on the end. Secured by a nut. An exceptional pair. Unmarked, as best I can tell, and certainly worthy of further research. This pair is massive. And extremely heavy. Each stands 16 3/4" tall and 21" deep. The feet are 10 1/2" wide. Sold just as-found. Uncleaned and unpolished, with original warm patina. The smooth surface is as good as I have seen. This set displays beautifully. With expected wear, surface scratches, and minor dings, but no repairs. One has a short split on the BACKSIDE, as seen in bottom photo, but this is not visible from the front. The other andiron is missing it's secondary brass foot. I am not an expert on antique brass, so please view photos for exact condition. These are easily disassembled. I am selling without reserve. A beautiful pair of brass and wrought iron andirons from c. 1810. Each having a brass urn-form finial above a flattened baluster form standard and a brass plinth stamped with an I.C. on arched supports ending in penny feet. The I.C. is probably Isaac Conklin, a blacksmith who worked in New York at various addresses from 1807 to 1817. The andirons measure: 18-3/8" tall with 14-5/16" supports. We are more inclined to believe they are bronze being they never have corroded after hanging on our bathroom wall for over 35 years. To clarify them. The picture to the far right are a pair of"cast iron" andiron's that sold on ebay last week for around $413 delivered. These two that we have after close examination are the exact same casting only in bronze/brass without the brackets to put the legs on them that go out the back to hold the logs in your fireplace. HUGE Mansion Size Antique 19th C Victorian Empire Brass Flame Fireplace Andirons
Here we have a fine pair of estate fresh to the market antique 1830-1840 andirons in an Empire/Victorian transitional style. This pair is absolutely MASSIVE measuring about 30" tall with the largest ball being about a 6" diameter. From the flame finials to the fancy scroll work on the feet. This pair speaks quality however they are unsigned. Obviously they are not polished with a nice patina, only a few surface type scratches with no dents. One rod is bent at the bottom causing the foot to protrude outward slightly. Should be an easy job in the right hands to straighten the rod before assembly. In the pictures the andirons appear to bent so that they do not stand up straight. It appears that way mainly because of the table they are sitting on. Granted the one is bent but the table exaggerates it. They are solid brass with an iron ... morerod through the middle to hold them together and of course iron fire dogs which by the way are not warped or bent from heat like so many we find. I also see no splits in any of the brass spacers. They weigh 25 1/2 pounds EACH. I will be disassembling this set for shipping purposes. We may ship in 2 different boxes. Thank you for viewing. Vintage Mid Century Fireplace Andirons Black Cast Iron Vase & Brass Urn Fire Dog
This Listing Is For A Set Of Fireplace Andirons From 1951 Black Cast Iron Vases& Black Urns Very Popular Style In The Post War Era Through The Early 1960's SHIPPING IS BY FAST PRIORITY MAIL WITH INSURANCE This hearth ware is from a respected antique store in the Detroit area which closed some time ago. The inventory tag said they were from'Boston-Edison1951' Boston Edison is a neighborhood in Detroit with really cool mansions. I've found some old catalog listings with similar looking fire dogs from the mid 1940's to late 50's) They are fully functional& well used andirons. These are not purely decorative as are many black& brass andirons from the era. Speaking of Decorative- While researching these. I saw a decorator magazine showing similar andirons with the log arms removed& hung on a wall as primitive ... moredecor. Creative! Starting at the top. The finials are solid brass turnings. The urns are hollow brass sheet stock. The vases are heavy cast iron and the legs are probably stamped steel or thin sheet iron. They are not heavy. The log carriers(or sprues or shanks) are iron& are heavy. The log shanks can be angled for shallower depth fireplace hearths. Every part stacks on a threaded rod and the finials screw on to hold it all together. See'Exploded View' photo) The log arms are held with a square nut on the bottom which can be hand or wrench tightened. CONDITION NOTES- The brass parts have a lacquer coating which will need to be removed before polishing. Some is missing already. They certainly need polishing to look brand new. Or can be left as-is with the patina of age. Lacquer is easily removed either with lacquer thinner or by boiling in water. One of the urns has a crack and a dent. As seen in two photos. The crack& dent are on the same side& are small enough that they can be turned to the back of the fireplace& not be seen. The vases look very good. You may or may not want to repaint the legs. This beautiful set of andirons are a minimum of 30 years old. Because they have worked inure house for that long, I am selling them as decorative items simply because I am not certain of their provenance! They are quite beautiful and quite large each measuring 21" tall and the feet are 8" wide across the front. Set of American Federal Period Brass Andirons c. 1830
This great set of period Federal andirons was made in the 1830's. The legs with spurs are earlier in design as the brass founder continued to use old patterns for pressing into his casting sand. They have a great old unbuffed patina and original iron supports with front brass posts probably added later for strength. The iron center posts have been peened into the legs in the correct early 19th c. manner. I have added photos to show the period construction of these great andirons.The right leg of one of the andirons has been professionally restored(probably in the early 20th c- see photo) These andirons are sturdy and ready for use! They are 16" tall and 16.5" deep.

Wonderful arts and crafts period andirons to dress up your fireplace. You can never lose with these as they only increase in value as there are less and less American Craftsmen to make them. Think about it for a minute. how many blacksmiths do you know? How many did you know in your lifetime? These are probably 100 years old. They are pre owned and used. And they have rust present. These bird heads remind me of Bradley and Hubbard products. If I find reliable documentation I will add this. I am still looking, I know they made griffons. Birds? don't know. These have welds. That tells me that they are not from say 1850. Was thrilled to get these as they are not the mundane simple type. These are expensive to ship as the dimensions are charged for as well as the weight. I don't want more than the cost of shipping and will give back any ... morethat is not charged. I also don't know where I am shipping to. We can work this out. Plan on $100. If it is less, lucky you! Then, you get some back! when a large package is shipped UPS, and it is bigger than they think the weight should be for that size, they have what they call billable weight. this is more than a little package of the same weight. They are from the Victorian Era which means they were made sometime in between the mid 1800's to 1901. These heavy duty old fireplace andirons are in nice condition for their age. They came from an antique store many years ago but were never actually used in the most recent home these came from. They were used for decor purposes. I'm not sure when these were last used in a fireplace. They are very solid and heavy. The black paint is chipping off in some areas with a little bit of rust. The andirons both measure 19" long. The width at the faces are 3 1/4" wide. These fireplace andirons have been sitting in a dry and non smoking environment for years. These would make an excellent housewarming decor gift idea.
