This is the second of three pairs of stirrups I bought in La Paz Bolivia a number of years ago. IT WAS AN ADVENTURE, BELIEVE ME! You see. It was the weekend and I was bored. So I started out from the hotel in pursuit of small treasures I could bring home. I was thinking coins, stamps, certificates for Land Grants from the King.things like that. Well, I met this tiny little fellow that had super blue eyes and a weird hat. After he told me he had just sold his last Land Grant he asked if I would be willing to walk a few blocks to see his hidden treasure trove. It wasn't raining and he only came up to my belly button so I said sure, why not. Off we went and boy could that little rascal walk. Everyone is out of breathe in La Paz ... morebecause of the altitude but when we got to this garage-like structure I was sure I'd never recover. He told me to wait outside while he turned on the lights. I was praying for a power failure. But when he came back I had recovered both my breathe and dignity so I was ready to venture on in. Talk about cobwebs and dust.this place had never been cleaned. And it was choked full of old furniture. Lamps, paintings and small art items. While the heart and bank account were willing the common sense factor said small, small, small because whatever I bought had to go on the plane. I hate common sense. But that is what I followed so these stirrups are part of the loot I could get in the suitcase. They measure 8" toe to heel and about 7" tall. They are wrapped with a metal band that would have attached to the leather strap that would have come from the saddle. I know all this from watching Cowgirl Rodeo. How old are they. I'm 70 and they have more wrinkles than I do so I figure they are a century or two back. Wonderful large bowl olla shaped Pre-Coumbian vessel/bowl that is solid and has no cracks or chips. Good carved markings surround the neck of vessel. Scattered mineral deposits and it has a strong earthy smell when dampened inside. There are no really clear root markings. The color variations and darkening of surface areas typical of old fired vessel. Nice coarse texture and it is sturdy. A great basic piece for any collection. Great price for this item. It is 51/2 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter. A very pleasing shape and proportioned piece. This is my set of stone carved figures from Mexico. They were my fathers and were handed down to me. They are Pre columbian inspired carvings, my father had told me some are possibly authentic but i havent had the chance to send them to a authenticator. The male figure has arms at sides, a beard and portion of a headwrap, etched on verso.
