Silver shatamana, long narrow type, Gandhara (600-500 BC)-1st Indian coin issue!
Long concave silver bar. 45mm long, struck with a 6-armed Gandharan symbol on each end. 11.45 grams. Rajgor 540-545 var. SUPERB for these. Rare this nice! These fascinating large coins, equal to about 3 karshapanas, are the most likely candidates to be the very first Indian coins ever struck. During the 6th century BC Gandhara was a subject of the Persian Empire(as known from an inscription dating to the times of Darius, ca.520-518 BC) The Persians are likely to have introduced the native Gandharans to the idea of a struck coinage. The earliest Gandharan coins- shatamanas(=100 manas, the meaning is unknown, also known as"bent bars" were probably based on a Persian siglos standard, since the average weight of these shatamanas equals to the weight of 2 Persian sigloi. From Gandhara, the idea of struck, or punchmarked, coinage spread ... moresouth and soon the punchmarked coins were produced in many other regions of northern and central Indai. This theory concerning the first coins in India is quite widespread, though it is not accepted by everyone(some people prefer an idea of independent invention of coinage, and are against the idea of the foreign introduction) These shatamanas were issued over a long period of time, though it is uncertain when their production ended(Chandragupta Maurya conquered Gandhara around 300 BC, and the production of the independent Gandharana coinage did not continue pass that point) The good silver shatamanas were replaced by the short debased issues and then by silver plated and copper bars(which are much more common and retail for about 100$ each) The early good silver shatamans are very rare- although a few hoards of these coins were unearthed in the last century, very few coins reached the numismatic market. wvar2300a-shatamana)

4th C GANDHARA GIANT FASTING MEDITATING LORD BUDDHA ANTIQUE STATUE INDIA HINDU
BayTemplate_ Untitled Docu AUTHENTIC ARTS RAREST FASTING BUDDHA Masterwork This is a truly rare sculpture as this particular subject of the"fasting" buddha is found only in the Gandharan works in India and those too only a handful. Typically deties in the subcontinent were depicted in their idyllic state depicting the perfect form of the Gods. This sculpture that portrayed the Shakyamuni during his severest time during the 6 years of meditation thatultimatelyled to his enlightenment. It was during these incredible 6 years of meditation strict fasting and extreme self denial that the Lord Siddhartha put himself through in his efforts to learn the truth about the human condition and a method of release from its endless cycle of birth suffering and death. Lord Siddartha would eventually learn that this fanatical asceticism is not the ... moreanswer in his search for the ultimate truth just as his previous life of luxury and hedonism as Prince was either and he would ultimatley embrace the Middle Way, between extreme luxury and extreme austerity. However during this period of extreme austerity he lost a prodigious amount of weight so much so in fact that his disciples that looked upon him feared for his very life as he skeletal in appearance. The presence of a beard on the face of the Buddha-to-be is particualrly interesting as it shows his complete disregard for his own body during this period of his life. The extreme realism in the treatment of the Buddhas emaciated body is however characteristic of Gandharan art however unlike the majority of typical ancient India art that depicted the idyllic portryal of the Gods as mentioned earlier this work was heavily influenced by the Hellenic works of Greek and Roman art which paid particular attention with the details of the human anatomy as there was a preoccupation with detailed depictions of physical reality. In this way we see what a wonderful and rare blend of the two great civilizations this work encompasses. The sinews and bones of the Buddhas body are revealed ben

During the 6th century BC Gandhara was a subject of the Persian Empire(as known from an inscription dating to the times of Darius, ca.520-518 BC) The Persians are likely to have introduced the native Gandharans to the idea of a struck coinage. From Gandhara, the idea of struck, or punchmarked, coinage spread south and soon the punchmarked coins were produced in many other regions of northern and central Indai. This theory concerning the first coins in India is quite widespread. Though it is not accepted by everyone(some people prefer an idea of independent invention of coinage, and are against the idea of the foreign introduction) These shatamanas were issued over a long period of time. VERY INTERESTING EARLY TERRACOTTA BUDDHA HEAD - GANDHARA - EXTREMELY RARE - L@@K
this is a very interesting piece worthy of further research. I believe it is the head of an early buddha, could turn out to be hundreds of years old, viewing and info very welcome, probably one of the rarest things ive owned. id say its probably a full size head measuring about 27cm high, 18cm across, its also very heavy weighing about 4.9kg, my opinion is that its a genuine early example, it came with some more very rare pieces that ive been listing. there is damage and cracks as expected on a piece like this, i would prefer collection due to the rarity and fragile nature of the piece. would look fantastic if you have a stand made for it, im sure it will be a very long time before you find another piece as good as this. This theory concerning the first coins in India is quite widespread, though it is not accepted by everyone(some people prefer an idea of independent invention of coinage, and are against the idea of the foreign introduction) These shatamanas were issued over a long period of time, though it is uncertain when their production ended(Chandragupta Maurya conquered Gandhara around 300 BC, and the production of the independent Gandharana coinage did not continue pass that point) The good silver shatamanas were replaced by the short debased issues and then by silver plated and copper bars(which are much more common and retail for about 100$ each) The early good silver shatamans are very rare- although a few hoards of these coins were unearthed in the last century, very few coins reached the numismatic market. wvar2301d-shatamana) e5b.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*b7g%3Ee5b-13f2de8f688-0xe3-

Long concave silver bar. 30mm long, 13mm wide, struck with a 6-armed Gandharan symbol on each end. 11.44 grams. Well-struck for these! Rajgor 540-545 var. Squat crowned and cuirassed bust right; trident before. Horse tail or yak fan behind/ No type. 23mm, 3.46 grams. Hadda-Gandhara mint. Cf. Göbl Hunnen Em. 146, 80-82; Supplementa Orientalia- Alram- MACW- EXCEEDINGLY rare! SNG sold a similar example(very debased, sold as"bronze" for 575$ plus the auction fees. I have seen a similar example being purchased at a coin show for 2000$. All these coins are extremely rare- this particular example is struck in good quality metal and is of full weight. This coin is most likely of Toramana, the successor of Khingila(Circa 440-490 AD) Göbl associates the three emissions referenced above with Toramana, and most explicitly Em. 146; the type bearing the greatest technical similarity. As the legends in the time of Toramana begin degrading(as well as metallic content) classification is ... morebased heavily upon bust type. Here is an increasing tendency towards a squat Indian portrait, but the features are still bold and distinctly personal. w1634-
