Publisher: Shire Egyptology; 1995) The ancient Egyptians believed that the statutory agricultural labor imposed on them in order to utilize the Nile floods would continue in the afterlife. To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti. A figurine which they hoped would deputize for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of'draft-dodging' the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti / Ushabti Figure
A well modeled Ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664-323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, with back pillar behind. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming ... moreto life" if called and performing the work themselves. This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. The piece is made from Egyptian faience. Which is a material somewhere between ceramic and glass, composed of crushed, fired quartz and prized in ancient times for its beautiful glaze. A fascinating piece of ancient Egyptian faience sculpture. Height: 3 3/4 inches. Condition: Good. Unrestored with attractive glaze. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. Authentic Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti / Ushabti Statue Figure - 664 BC
A well modeled ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. Height: 3 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. The god's beard, the tripartite wig, hands and hoes are not painted, but finely modelled. Furthermore, the figure has a pedestal as well as a back pillar. These features indicate that the shabti dates to the 4th or 3th century B.C. 30th dynasty/early Ptolemaic period) The Inscription reads as follows: 1) sHD Wsir sms( 2) Hr-xnsw ms(n) MAat-wr(t) 1) Illuminating of Osiris. Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti Statue Figure Third Intermediate Period Ushabti
A charming ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Third Intermediate Period, approximately 1069- 664 B.C. The figure is shown mumiform with arms crossed and holding agricultural implements; a pair of hoes. He carries a seed bag on his back. Details highlighted in black. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the burrial chambers of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could ... morebe substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming to life" if called and performing the work themselves. This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. It was deemed that a"spell" should be written on the shabti so that it should awaken as planned- this is the so-called shabti spell from chapter six of the Book of the Dead and reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis. Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again, then'Here am I! you shall say" A fascinating piece of ancient Egyptian faience sculpture. Height: 2 1/4 inches. Height mounted: 3 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Mounted, as shown. Provenance: Ex. Hilton Price collection. Acquired during the early 1900's. INTERESTING SHABTI STYLE FIGURE - LARGE PIECE WITH HYROGLIFICS - DAMAGED
this looks like an interesting piece. I think its in the style of a shabti, but larger than most others ive seen as this measures about 23.5cm high, i would prefer viewing on this as i can be sure on age, it might be something from the grand tour made to copy an original famous shabti, or then it may be an ancient piece, but due to ebay policy on antiquities i will sell this as a copy as i have no documents or finders certificate to prove its originality, although my opinion is that it is a very ancient example, please enlarge all 12 photos and make your own mind up, it has a chunk missing from the back of the head, also if you look closely you can see lines mainly across the middle section, this looks like old damage where it has been broken and fixed back together, this should show across the chest area at the front and down below the waist ... morearea as it goes around the back, also on close inspection just above knee height it also looks to have been broken and repaired as fine line visible in places with nibbles missing. where the chunk is missing on back of his head it looks like a black stone, also his headpiece was probably more pointed but top section missing. someone had glued a small tatty stand to the base as this figure does not stand upright as it would be on a slope, and the small wedge that someone glued on has now come loose and seperated from the figure, but even when it was on it still didnt stand upright so a new stand is needed, they usually display best in one of the metal supports that pot dolls sometimes have. surely a rare and interesting piece worthy of further research. it came with lots more old and unusual items im listing. DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF NON PAYING BIDDERS- ALL MY AUCTIONS HAVE BUYER REQUIREMENTS- SO IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT ME SO I CAN ALLOW YOU TO BID- ANYONE WHO BIDS AND THEN RETRACTS BIDS DAYS AFTER WILL BE BLOCKED FROM FUTURE AUCTIONS- ALSO NON PAYING BIDDERS WILL BE REPORTED AND BLOCKED- BUYER REQUIREMENTS I HAVE SET ARE BELOW- SO I

Ancient Egyptian Inscribed Faience Ushabti Shabti - 664 BC
A nicely glazed and detailed ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664-323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, seed basket and back pillar behind, with a frontal column of hieroglyphics. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that ... morecould be substituted for themselves if need be. Height: 4 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. ArtAncient Ltd. recently purchased a large part of the inventory of the former"Museum Gallery" Previously loca

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE SHABTI FIGURINE FOR SEMATAWWY TANETNEFERHER
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE SHABTI FOR SEMATAWY TANETNEFERHER Blue faience shabti for the Osiris Sematawy born of Tanetneferher. TheT formed inscription on the shabti reads as follows: SHD Wsjr jmj-rA xAs.t SmA-tA.wj ms(w) n tA-n.t)nfr-Hr mAa-xrw. Illuminating of Osiris. The overseer of the necropolis, Sematawy, born of Tanetneferher, justified. The title jmj-rA xAs.t literally"the overseer of the desert/foreign land" is rare on shabtis. The"overseer of the necropolis" was responsible for the management of a cemetery as indicated by documentary papyri. The personal name Sematawy is well attested for the Egyptian Late Period(cf. Ranke. Personennamen, 296.10) Sematawy"he who unites the two lands" was a local deity of Heracleopolis Magna in northern Middle Egypt on the west bank near the Fayum. Therefore, it is possible ... morethat the shabti was originally found in this area.
