An ancient Egyptian New Kingdom faience shabti. Dating to the 20th Dynasty, 1187 to 1064 BC. Modelled in shimmering blue faience. The figure is shown ... moremummiform, wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. The ancient Egyptians believed that the eternal soul of the deceased resided in a paradise known as the'Field of Reeds' With its calm waters and lush vegetation. This fertile environment was similar to their own earthly world at the banks of the river Nile. Unfortunately however, the dead were also expected to undertake agricultural labour on behalf of the gods; ploughing, sowing, and reaping the crops. For those who wished to avoid this physical strain, shabti figures were placed in their burial chambers as alternative workers, imbued with a powerful magic so that they would rise and take the deceased’s place working in the fields. A spell was often written on the shabti so that it would awaken(remnants of which are preserved on the legs of this example) Known as the'shabti spell' from Chapter Six of the Book of the Dead, it reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis, Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again. Then'Here am I! you shall say. Height: 3 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. A well preserved example. Provenance: Ex. Ballard collection. Colchester, UK. Acquired around 1890- 1920. Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti / Ushabti Figure
A well modeled Ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664-323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, with back pillar behind. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming ... moreto life" if called and performing the work themselves. This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. The piece is made from Egyptian faience. Which is a material somewhere between ceramic and glass, composed of crushed, fired quartz and prized in ancient times for its beautiful glaze. A fascinating piece of ancient Egyptian faience sculpture. Height: 3 3/4 inches. Condition: Good. Unrestored with attractive glaze. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. ArtAncient Ltd. recently purchased a large part of the inventory of the former"Museum Gallery" Previously located at 19 Bury Place, opposite the British Museum in London. Authentic Ancient Egyptian Faience Shabti / Ushabti Statue Figure - 664 BC
A well modeled ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. Height: 3 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. INTERESTING SHABTI STYLE FIGURE - LARGE PIECE WITH HYROGLIFICS - DAMAGED
this looks like an interesting piece. I think its in the style of a shabti, but larger than most others ive seen as this measures about 23.5cm high, i would prefer viewing on this as i can be sure on age, it might be something from the grand tour made to copy an original famous shabti, or then it may be an ancient piece, but due to ebay policy on antiquities i will sell this as a copy as i have no documents or finders certificate to prove its originality, although my opinion is that it is a very ancient example, please enlarge all 12 photos and make your own mind up, it has a chunk missing from the back of the head, also if you look closely you can see lines mainly across the middle section, this looks like old damage where it has been broken and fixed back together, this should show across the chest area at the front and down below the waist ... morearea as it goes around the back, also on close inspection just above knee height it also looks to have been broken and repaired as fine line visible in places with nibbles missing. where the chunk is missing on back of his head it looks like a black stone, also his headpiece was probably more pointed but top section missing. someone had glued a small tatty stand to the base as this figure does not stand upright as it would be on a slope, and the small wedge that someone glued on has now come loose and seperated from the figure, but even when it was on it still didnt stand upright so a new stand is needed, they usually display best in one of the metal supports that pot dolls sometimes have. surely a rare and interesting piece worthy of further research. it came with lots more old and unusual items im listing. DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF NON PAYING BIDDERS- ALL MY AUCTIONS HAVE BUYER REQUIREMENTS- SO IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT ME SO I CAN ALLOW YOU TO BID- ANYONE WHO BIDS AND THEN RETRACTS BIDS DAYS AFTER WILL BE BLOCKED FROM FUTURE AUCTIONS- ALSO NON PAYING BIDDERS WILL BE REPORTED AND BLOCKED- BUYER REQUIREMENTS I HAVE SET ARE BELOW- SO I

AUTHENTIC ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE SHABTI SCULPTURE
A well crafted. Authentic ancient Egyptian faience shabti, dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 B.C. Nicely modelled. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. This shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform manual labor in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming ... moreto life" if called and performing the work themselves. The shabti is made from Egyptian faience. Which is a composit material somewhere between ceramic and glass, composed of crushed, fired quartz and prized in ancient times for its beautiful glaze. The glaze is a blue- green. A fascinating piece of Ancient Egyptian faience sculpture with good definition. Height: 2 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. No chips. Cracks or damage. Some minor wear and encrustation to the glaze. Provenance: Purchased at a major London auction gallery in the 1960's. This item is unconditionally guaranteed by the seller to be authentic as described. For additional security. We offer a full money-back guarantee if a recognized authority disputes the authenticity of any object sold. Contact seller for overseas shipping costs. We charge our costs on non-US destinations. Ancient Egyptian Inscribed Faience Ushabti Shabti - 664 BC
A nicely glazed and detailed ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664-323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, seed basket and back pillar behind, with a frontal column of hieroglyphics. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. It was deemed that a"spell" should be written on the shabti so that it should awaken as planned- this is the so-called shabti spell from chapter six of the Book of the Dead and reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis. Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again, then'Here am I! you shall say" A fascinating piece of ancient Egyptian faience sculpture.
