Antique Victorian Red Leather Bound Carte De Visite Album& 11 CDV Photographs. A lovely Victorian carte de visite photograph album. Bound in red leather ... morewith an embossed scroll and flower decoration and gilt edged pages. Unfortunately. However, it would originally have had two brass clasps which are missing. With 10 pages and space for 20 carte de visite photographs. It contains 10 portrait photographs. Some of the individuals are named- Jennie Donkin, James Allison, Sarah Ianson, Charles Graham, John Allison, Eleanor Allison, Thomas Glover and Mrs Dent. It must have contained other photographs which have been removed as some of the empty slots have pencil written descriptions. Photographers include Robinson& Thompson of Liverpool. William Howie of Southport, A&G Taylor, Walton& Bridges of Richmond, North Yorkshire and Brown Barnes& Bell. Not in the best condition. As mentioned above. The brass clasps are missing and whilst the album cover is otherwise in good condition(save a little expected rubbing around the edges) it is detached from the pages. Internally nice and clean, there are some small tears to the page and opening edges and a sellotape repair to the first photo page. For more great items! We accept payment by paypal. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

Publisher: Shire Egyptology; 1995) The ancient Egyptians believed that the statutory agricultural labor imposed on them in order to utilize the Nile floods would continue in the afterlife. To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti. A figurine which they hoped would deputize for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of'draft-dodging' the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. As it existing in three separate countries with a common spirit and tradition; Ireland, Wales, and Brittany, is brilliantly revealed in these exciting epic chronicles with 120 evocative photographs of artifacts, manuscripts, and landscapes that bring the Celtic world to life as never before. Ireland, land of ancient warriors who value nothing higher than fame and courage as they battle magical forces pitted against them. Ancient warriors whose love of exaggeration and boasting compare with the most extravagant blarney. These are the Celts revealed by the early Irish chronicles. Wales. A land of bands and druids hemmed into a beautiful, mountainous country where King Arthur roamed with his knights. The Welsh warriors saw themselves as defenders of the west, heroes who would one day hurl the foreign oppressors back into the sea. The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Translated by Frances Winwar- Complete and Unabridged. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: ... moreThe Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during this time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Decameron is an entertaining series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. Recounted by young citizens of Florence who have fled the city in order to escape the plague. These young unmarried nobles, the"beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. This Italian book, written in 1351, inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, and remains one of the most enjoyable an

Ancient AD900Sz8 Medieval Roman Byzantine Macedonia Albania Bulgaria Flower Ring
Size 8 Genuine Ancient(Roman) Byzantine(Macedonian) Bronze Ring with Floral Pattern Bezel with Sculpted Bands 9th-11th Century A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Byzantine(Eastern Roman Empire) Bronze Ring. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Macedonia) 9th-11th Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 8(U.S. Diameter: 20 1/2mm(outer diameter) 18mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 18mm(diameter) Fixed 3 1/2mm Width Band. Weight: 4.08 grams. CONDITION: Excellent! Completely intact. Very light wear consistent with slight use, and little porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A very well preserved bronze ring circa ninth to eleventh century A.D. from Byzantine(Roman) Macedonia. As you can see. The ring is very elegant in design. The ring is constructed by the very simply method of joining the ... morebands by brazing both ends to a bezel. This was a rather primitive technique as opposed to rings which were cast in one piece, bands and bezel unified and not created separately- much like the style of a contemporary ring. The bezel either mimics a flower(something looking like a sunflower) or is supposed to suggest a large central gemstone flanked by a circumferential perimeter of accent stones(the inspiration still a flower) The bands as you can see are sculpted with a raised beaded rope which embellishes the entire bezel. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship, and is entirely intact- though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. As mentioned the ring does show some moderate overall wear. But of course you must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the purchased. And without any regard to twenty-first century posterity, that precisely what happened! The original medieval owner of this ring wore it, enjoyed it, and probably never could have in his most delusional moment ever dreamed that fifty generations later the ring wo

Ancient Roman “Evil Eye” Bronze Ring with Punch-Dot Motifs 100-200 AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About the Roman Rings Romans liked to wear big rings which drew attention and revealed the status of the wearer. A gold ring often contained a huge gemstone or Roman glass which was generally worn by the Senators and the bureaucrats. The common people referred as the Plebeians were allowed to wear only rings made of iron. However. Some Plebeians were awarded the right to wear the golden rings for their bravery or special service to the state. But gradually such stringent rules were relaxed during the reign of Justinian I. Women of ancient Rome were more inclined to wear multiple rings of varied materials and designs on their hands without the constraints of social classes. About This Ring This very solid piece of treasure comes in the form of an evil eye ring. Its band is very thick with a protrusive mold at the middle of its base and so is its eye-shaped bezel. Which adorns four of the deepest punch dot motifs representing an evil eye each. The contrast of the light earthen enc

Ancient Roman Celtic Abstract Engraved Bronze Ring Sz9
Genuine Ancient Celtic-Roman Bronze Ring with Engraved Geometric Bezel First Century A.D. Size 9 heavy and well-constructed ancient Celtic-Roman bronze ring with deeply engraved and excellently preserved abstract geometric bezel design. Is in excellent condition and is completely intact. Diameter: 26mm* 22mm(outer diameter) 19mm(inner diameter) Weight: 3.89 grams. A very handsome and heavily constructed Roman bronze ring with a well-preserved engraved motif. A ... morevery popular geometric design(especially with Celtic artisans) during the first few centuries A.D. Whether the design has any significance other than that merely of a geometric design is difficult to ascertain. Such cross-hatched and geometric designs were quite popular and extensively used. Oftentimes it is possible to identify a particular significance to the design– and opinions here are that it represents a Roman Legionary shield(scutum) design. However more often than not such tentative interpretations are speculative. Unfortunately many themes which may have had a distinct message 2,000 years ago mean nothing to the contemporary onlooker– the significance of the message lost in time. Suffice it to say the bezel of this ring bears a very popular engraved design quite typical of the time. The engraved design is still very distinct and sharp. Little worn by the passage of almost twenty centuries. The pattern looks a bit like an abstract starburst“X” Between two(opposite) arms” of the“X” are sets of three hash marks. The adjacent“arms” have an engraved“V” echoing the top and bottom“v” which together compose the“X” Even if the intent of the desi

It is three to six times the weight of the typical ring of the era. The bezel is 5mm in thickness, the bands are up to 3mm in thickness. The ring could be worn by successive generations without being worn out. Though it is only 9 1/2 in size, it is nonetheless of massive proportions. The heavy construction is of the more archaic style, characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This as opposed to the more modern style of construction prevalent in the following centuries whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(fashioned from a single piece of metal) As you can clearly see the bezel is sculpted. In what appears to be a six–lobed flower. We’re not sure whether the six-lobed design was meant to look like a flower, but it does. In any event there are seven notches cut out of the side of the bezel giving the appearance of a flower. You can also see that the bands are sculpted as well, three per

The ring possesses a large oval concave bezel which forms a“cup” for an oval gemstone. The ring is fairly light in construction, of one-piece construction much like a contemporary ring. Ring is in good condition and a Very Rare Inclusion to the very finest Antiquity Collection. In ancient times since banks did not exist. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still ... moreconsidered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Flowing Incised Design
Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Flowing Incised Design Description: Bronze ring with attractive random flowing incised design in center. Dark brown patina, slight earthen encrustation. Diameter: 14.9mm Size: US: 4; UK: H ½; Germany: 15; Japan: 7 Click to view supersized image The crafting and wearing of jewelry has been a unique trait exhibited by mankind from our early beginnings. Paleolithic items of adornment have been unearthed that date back 75.000-100,000 years. It is theorized that jewelry originated as a purely functional item used to fasten animal hides together allowing them to be worn as clothing. Findings suggest that jewelry making became more prevalent over 40.000 years ago as mankind migrated from Africa and the Middle East into continental Europe. Early necklaces and bracelets were made from readily available materials ... moresuch as bone, teeth, shells and stone strung together using twine from animal sinew or catgut. The forging of copper some 7.000 years ago allowed metal to be utilized as a material to craft jewelry. The smelting of copper and tin to make the alloy bronze heralded the advent of the Bronze Age some 5.000-6,000 years ago. It is conceivable that metal workers used their knowledge of metallurgy to craft items of adornment as well as tools and weapons. Jewelry has served(and continues to serve) three basic roles. As an ornament it attracts attention and could be used as a testament to hunting prowess or more general attributes. As an amulet holding supernatural power it protected the wearer against physical harm. Warded off evil and healed ailments. As society evolved it also became a symbol of wealth or social standing. Rings were extremely popular among the Romans. Their faith in the curative and protective powers attributed to some stones(as well as shapes and images) provided additional incentive to wear these amulets on their fingers. There were certain rules in the fashion of rings that were strictly observed. Plain bronze and signet rings were worn on either hand while rings se
