Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 159 pages. Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company. Inc. 1997) The Celtic world. As it existing in three separate countries with a common spirit and tradition; Ireland, Wales, and Brittany, is brilliantly revealed in these exciting epic chronicles with 120 evocative photographs of artifacts, manuscripts, and landscapes that bring the Celtic world to life as never before. Ireland, land of ancient warriors who value nothing higher than fame and courage as they battle magical forces pitted against them. Ancient warriors whose deeds are as noble and mysterious as the hill forts and standing stones scattered around the landscape. Ancient warriors whose love of exaggeration and boasting compare with the most extravagant blarney. These are the Celts revealed by the early Irish chronicles. Wales. A land of bands and druids hemmed into a beautiful, mountainous country where King Arthur roamed with his knights. The Welsh warriors saw themselves as defenders of the west, heroes who would one day hurl the foreign oppressors back into the sea. These dramatic chronicles date back to the Middle Ages, but they are truly much older than that. They tell of love and betrayal, of quests and challenges, of supernatural creatures and of murder. Battling dragons. Tyrants, and sorcerers, the warriors of Brittany were people of the sea. Hermits, missionaries, mystics, they passed down their tales of mystery and magic orally through the centuries. They are captured here from a time when the old pagan days were dying out, and the secret, supernatural skeins of the early mystical Celts were quickly attaching themselves to a new religion. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

This glorious luminary was originally regarded and worshipped by the Pagans as being the most brilliant and the most useful object in the universe- as constituting by his light and heat the natural source of life and health both to the animal and vegetable kingdoms, and as imparting his splendor to the other heavenly bodies, and his glory to the whole firmament. The more deeply investigations are carried into heathen mythology, the more clearly it is to be seen that almost all its principal divinities resolve themselves into an identity with the Sun, to whose predominating influence over the moon and stars the government ... moreand preservation of all things both in heaven and earth were ascribed. Ancient monuments represent the Sun under the form of a man, with a youthful face, the head encircled with rays: sometimes he is mounted on a chariot drawn by winged horses. A horse was sacrified to him, on account of the great swiftness of that animal, a usage especially practiced by the Lacedemonians. The Sun was called Mithras by the Persians; Osiris by the Egyptians. DETAIL: This is a handsome and fairly uncommon silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself sometime between 103 and 111 A.D. It is in exceptionally good condition. With only very mild wear from circulation in ancient Rome, all of the legends and themes very clear and distinct. It was exceptionally well struck both front and back, on a generous planchet(blank) The strike was well-centered, and so caught virtually all of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. On the whole it is an exceptional specimen, the generous planchet and well-centered strike, combined with very low circulatory wear, likely placing the coin within the top ten percentile. The obverse of the coin depicts the bust of the Roman Emperor Marcus Trajan. Emperor Trajan is depicted draped with laureate crown and accompanied by the fairly complex legend“IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V PP” TRAIANO” of course refers to the Emperor’s name. There being no“J” in Roman Latin the letter“I” is used. Emperor Traja

Also known as Flavius Claudius Crispus and Flavius Valerius Crispus was a Caesar of the Roman Empire. He was the first-born son of Constantine I and Minervina. Crispus' year and place of birth are uncertain. He is considered likely to have been born between 299 and 305. Somewhere in the Eastern Roman Empire. His mother Minervina was either a concubine or a first wife to Constantine. Nothing else is known about Minervina. His father served as a hostage in the court of Eastern Roman Emperor Diocletian in ... moreNicomedia. Thus securing the loyalty of Caesar of the Western Roman Empire Constantius Chlorus. Father of Constantine and grandfather of Crispus. In 307. Constantine allied to the Italian Augusti. And this alliance was sealed with the marriage of Constantine to Fausta. Daughter of Maximian and sister of Maxentius. The marriage of Constantine to Fausta has caused modern historians to question the status of his relation to Minervina and Crispus. If Minervina was his legitimate wife. Constantine would have needed to secure a divorce before marrying Fausta. This would have required an official written order signed by Constantine himself. But no such order is mentioned by contemporary sources. This silence in the sources has led many historians to conclude that the relationship between Constantine and Minervina was informal and to assume her to have been an unofficial lover. However. Minervina may have already been dead by 307. A widowed Constantine would need no divorce order. Neither the true nature of the relationship between Constantine and Minervina nor the reason Crispus came under the protection of his father will ever probably be known. ROMAN SPEAR BUTT CAP WESTERN EUROPE CIRCA 100 BC GS
ROMAN SPEAR BUTT CAP WESTERN EUROPE CIRCA 100 BC TOTAL LENGTH 95 mm TIP LENGTH 35 mm SOCKET 14 mm WEIGHT 28 grams CONDITION cleaned/ conserved GOOD This is a ROMAN Butt Cap used to protect the end of the spear and for count weight of the spear head. It has a some socket seam deterioration that can be seen in photo. The only example of the square end butt cap I can find is to the Celts or the Roman Republic and with the smaller size of this I believe it to be Roman. An exmaple of this style of butt cap is illustrated in Bishop and Coulston's book on Roman Equipment. This has been cleaned with electrolysis and conserved with a thin layer of hot wax so no doubt about its metal stability. Even though it has some deterioration it is still a nice artifact to hold and admire. You can buy a rusty dirt covered artifact for less money but do not ... moreexpect to have an item of this quality when you clean it. To leave it dirt and rust covered will only hassen its deterioration. This has no repair of any kind to the best of my knowledge as is with all items listings unless stated. Provided with a Certificate of Authenticity and Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. Mars was the Roman god of war. The son of Juno and Jupiter. Husband of Bellona. And the lover of Venus. He was the most prominent of the military gods that were worshipped by the Roman legions. The martial Romans considered him second in importance only to Jupiter(their main god) His festivals were held in March(named for him) and October. As the word Mars has no Indo-European derivation. Fields and boundaries and farmers. In the second century BC, the conservative Cato the Elder advised"For your cattle. For them to be healthy, make this sacrifice to Mars Silvanus you must make this sacrifice each year" Mars later became associated with battle as the growing Roman Empire began to expand. And he came to be identified with the Greek god Ares. Unlike his Greek counterpart. Mars was generally revered and rivaled Jupiter as the most honoured god. He was also the tutelary god of the city of Rome. As he was regarded as the legendary father of Rome's founder. Romulus. It was believed that all Romans were descendants of Mars.
