A rare and genuine. Ancient Near Eastern Terracotta jug, dating to the 1st millennium B.C. With rounded base and globular body with wide. Cylindrical neck. The piece decorated with added pellets of clay and with two lug handles positioned bilaterally. A beautifully shaped vessel. And fascinating display piece. Height: 5 1/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Small area of base reattached and associated infill. Age related encrustation. Provenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his ... morefather, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. Although this specimen possesses obvious and unmistakable signs of burial, the piece is not heavily corroded or disfigured. More often than not small ancient metal artifacts such as this are extensively disfigured and suffer substantial degradation as a consequence of the ordeal of being buried for millennia. It is not at all unusual to find metal artifacts decomposed to the point where they are not much more substantial than discolored patterns in the soil. Actually most smaller ancient artifacts such as this are so badly oxidized that oftentimes all that is left is a green(bronze) or red(iron) stain in the soil. The consequence is that though you can see upon close scrutiny clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. To casual scrutiny it seems simply a primitive bracelet. These slight blemishes are not immediately discernible. Of course in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite distinct. But in hand, to the casual observer, it simply appears a nicely toned bronze bracelet. Though simple it is sturdy and well constructed, and entirely intact.
