PAYMENT IS IMMEDIATE UPON PURCHASE. If there is a display piece visible in any picture. It is NOT included unless otherwise stated. This is a large. Unique piece of vintage, primitive, Mexican folk art that feels like a brick material. It depicts three Colima dogs around a central pot or bowl. The clay pottery has a warm burnt umber and terracotta color. It measures approximately 9" wide by 8" tall by 3" mouth diameter at the rim of the bowl. It is in good shape but one of the dogs necks has a visible crack. I personally don't think it affects the wonder of this piece at all. I'm not certain of its age. There are no identifying marks on this piece either. Great find for your Mexican Folk Art collection or southwestern decor. This is a fairly heavy piece so postage will reflect that. Displays great and suituable for wearing. Modernly restrung with pieces from the late Dr. David Harner collection, Arkansas. The Colima culture flourished in ancient west Mexico along with the Nayarit and Jalisco cultures (collectively known as the Shaft Tomb cultures), in the 200BC-250AD range. All three produced incredible art, especially in the form of ceramic figures, while the Colima also specialized in crafting obsidian blades and ornamental pieces.

Colima Dog This is a wonderful Colima figural dog vessel. As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately ... moretwo thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on its history or provenance. But shows many indications of its age. It's a fascinating piece that is sure to complement any collection. Two legs repaired somewhat roughly. One ear is broken. The other is chipped. Other expected wear. Burnished exterior, rough interior with sediment deposits. 9 3/8" long. 6" high, 5" across[ p e n c i l p o i n t e r Shipping? FREE via USPS Priority International Shipping? Their art, architecture, mathematical and astrological systems influenced their surroundings, covering an area of about 620 miles, including the modern-day countries of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador, and Central Mexico. The Early Preclassic Mayan Period introduced pottery and fired clay figurines. The Mayans traded cacao, salt, seashells, jade, and obsidian. The Mayan Stepped Pyramids were built in their religious centers ... moreand they accompanied the palaces of their rulers. Mayan art reflects high level of aesthetics and artisanal sophistication. Several experts now describe them more as simple pits that were dug into the ground about 2 meters deep. This vessel. Like many others form this early period, is based upon gourd model. It is theorized that these vessels were part of a shamanic ritual and would hold food for the departed soul’s use as he/she traveled to the afterlife. eBay Note According to information I received. The Colima Dog's reputation as a healer persists to this day. It is not at all uncommon to find small Chihuahua-like dogs put to use in remote Mexican and Central American villages. Believed to ward off and cure numerous ailments including rheumatism. Asthma, toothache and insomnia, undoubtedly the gentle warmth of the animal's smooth skin does have a soothing effect on the sufferer. Being hairless, the dogs do radiate a lot of heat. In addition to raising dogs as a food source. Many peoples of Mexico believed that a dog accompanied a person's soul on the journey into the underworld. Discovery of these dog sculptures and mummified dogs in tombs suggests they were intended as companions for the deceased. The Xolo dog was named after the god who would lead the deceased into the afterlife. Xolotl(Lord of the Underworld" was the deity who aided the dead on their journey to the afterlife. COLIMA, Mexico Pre Columbian Pottery Male Figure with Skin Lesions 400-800 A. D.
This is a primitive piece of pottery made in Colima. Mexico circa 400-800 A.D. It is mounted on a wooden pedestal that gives the information about the piece and the back is an advertisement for Valisone Cream. This looks prehistoric and I believe it to be an authentic piece. The ad had me concerned, but the owner of this piece is a retired Archaeologist, so I now feel comfortable again calling this pottery piece an authentic primitive piece from Colima, Mexico. It measures 2.75" x 4.5" and is in great condition. See pictures for details and please contact me with any questions. 1150 14th#18

Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring Maya ruins in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. 5) Price. $2.799. Xolotl, Pre-Columbian "The God Dog" Pottery from Colima, Mexico
Pre-Columbian Art Pottery- Xolotl- The God Dog" Pottery from Colima. Mexico This is a replica or reproduction of XOLOTL. The hairless dog bred as a table delicacy, as well as, one of the little animals that guided the dead on their underworld journey. 5 1/2" long x 3" wide x 4" tall(ear to paw) dark red/brown burnished mottled finish- carrying ear of corn in its mouth. A little history of the Ancient Colima Pottery Dogs of Colima Mexico. Although Mesoamerican cultures produced pottery in abundance Colima's redware ceramics are acknowledged for their singular quality and artistry. Their color varies from deep mahogany to pale orange and the burnished surface is often motttled with a patina of manganese oxide. Colima artists created a wide variety of objects but they are most celebrated for perros cebados. Squat. Rotund ... moredogs, with short legs and rounded bodies. The cobby shape may have signified fertility, properity or the fact that dogs were fattened for consumption. Many Colima dogs carry ears of corn in their mouths. Maize was a staple food of this region for thousands of years. Testing has revealed that it wasa mainstay of the ancient Mesoamerican canine diet- and dog meat provided an essential source of protein for human inhabitants. These enigmatic figures were produced in what is now Mexico from the 3rd Century B.C. Dogs were considered to be useful on one's inevitable journey to the underworld and were therefore placed with the deceased as trusty companions. Please feel free to ask questions before purchase. 1828 1/4 real Colima Token Ficha Municipal
These"coins" are called hacienda tokens and were used to pay ranch workers for their labors. The families of the workers usually lived on the ranch land and were essentially treated very much like medieval serfs. The tokens could only be used in the ranch company store and so the workers were tied completely to the ranch owners. The store sold general goods including food. Tools, cooking utensils, clothing, tobacco, fuel oil, lamps, bedding, simple furniture and other essentials. The tokens come in many shapes and sizes and are made from brass, wood, white metal, copper and even bone. They are sometimes even painted as you have observed. The tokens usually state the name of the hacienda or ranch a denomination(they didn't use Peso or centavo as these were official National designations) The denominations were made up by the ... moreRanch owners and they pegged the company store prices in tokens to a relationship to the national currency. Values depend on the rarity of the item in the market place and the current collector interest. Prices range from a dollar or so to more than $100.
