One period of the area’s development is called the Los Ortices era which began around 500 BCE. During this time the elements which characterize the pre-Hispanic peoples of Colima appear such as shaft tombs and a distinctive ceramic style called“rojo bruñido” or burnished red. The next phase called Comala, covers the time period from around 100 to 600 CE, centered on a site of the same name. Comala people would perfect burnished red pottery and develop representations of people and animals with skill and fluid lines. The best known of these figures are known as the“fattened dogs” The Comala site shows influence from Teotihuacan. Around 500 CE, another site in Armería developed along the river of the same name. The Chanal site was active from the 6th to the 15th centuries and was the main culture for the Colima area. Belonging to this culture was a number of smaller sites and most of the ones known and explored to date. After Chanal the largest related site is La Campana but most contain pyramidal bases and plazas with structures often containing rounded edges. Images of Huehueteotl and Tlaloc appear with this culture. Which may indicate the origins of the cultures that ultimately settled central Mexico. There is one other site cal

The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats. This beautifully modeled, solid archaic standing female figure is depicted wearing a headband, earrings and a necklace with multiple pendants. It measures 2 inches in width by 0.5 inches in depth by 6 inches in height(5.08 cm by 1.27 cm by 15.2 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, with a hairline cracks on both legs from previous repair work, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. Their art, architecture, mathematical and astrological systems influenced their surroundings, covering an area of about 620 miles, including the modern-day countries of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador, and Central Mexico. The Early Preclassic Mayan Period introduced pottery and fired clay figurines. The Mayans traded cacao, salt, seashells, jade, and obsidian. Dated 8/9/2011 This Red Colima Tripod was almost certainly part of the burial contents of a“shaft tomb” that was constructed in Western Mexico during the Late Preclassic and Early Classic Eras(150-500 AD) Although called shaft tombs. Several experts now describe them more as simple pits that were dug into the ground about 2 meters deep. This vessel. Like many others form this early period, is based upon gourd model. It is theorized that these vessels were part of a shamanic ritual and would hold food for the departed soul’s use as he/she traveled to the afterlife. eBay Note According to information I received. I certify that this Ancient Tripod Bowl was collected in Mexico between 1962-1968 by US museum archeologists and has since been decommissioned. In the past few weeks I have picked up four near complete collections of Mexico and a number of scarce singles. I am going through these and you will find much of the listed material today from the beginnings of what I have now in stock. I am pleased to offer a multitude of early Mexican classic stamps and Postal History items that have come from some of the most advanced collections of Mexico to come on the market in years. There are hundreds of early issues with both better condition as well as better cancels that I will be listing over the next few months. I am also listing some wonderful cover where you can find pre-stamps. Classic stamps, Postal stationary ... moreand special cancels. I will continue to put fine Mexican stamps and covers up to satisfy the novice to the advanced collectors. Please look at all my lots to find some great stamps and covers that can be added to your collection. Please don't make the mistake of thinking anything in Mexican stamps are common. So, please look at more than just this stamp. So, please take a look at the others I have listed and maybe you will find some items to add to your collection. Please enjoy! Some of my markings you may not be familiar with: MOG = Mint original gum. This is what I may call anything from one that has a good amount of gum to one that is even lightly hinged. MNG = Mint NO Gum. In other words, one that has been soaked off or never had gum. MH = Mint Hinged. A category that covers anything from one that has been easily visible hinging to one that still has a hinge attached. MLH = Mint Light Hinge. A stamp that has very little of the original hinge mark showing. This can be one that obviously has been hinged,

The Colima Dog's reputation as a healer persists to this day. It is not at all uncommon to find small Chihuahua-like dogs put to use in remote Mexican and Central American villages. Believed to ward off and cure numerous ailments including rheumatism. Asthma, toothache and insomnia, undoubtedly the gentle warmth of the animal's smooth skin does have a soothing effect on the sufferer. Being hairless, the dogs do radiate a lot of heat. In addition to raising dogs as a food source. Many peoples of Mexico believed that a dog accompanied a person's soul on the journey into the underworld. Discovery of these dog sculptures and mummified dogs in tombs suggests they were intended as companions for the deceased. The Xolo dog was named after the god who would lead the deceased into the afterlife. Xolotl(Lord of the Underworld" was the deity who aided the dead on their journey to the afterlife. COLIMA, Mexico Pre Columbian Pottery Male Figure with Skin Lesions 400-800 A. D.
This is a primitive piece of pottery made in Colima. Mexico circa 400-800 A.D. It is mounted on a wooden pedestal that gives the information about the piece and the back is an advertisement for Valisone Cream. This looks prehistoric and I believe it to be an authentic piece. The ad had me concerned, but the owner of this piece is a retired Archaeologist, so I now feel comfortable again calling this pottery piece an authentic primitive piece from Colima, Mexico. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring Maya ruins in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Xolotl, Pre-Columbian "The God Dog" Pottery from Colima, Mexico
Pre-Columbian Art Pottery- Xolotl- The God Dog" Pottery from Colima. Mexico This is a replica or reproduction of XOLOTL. The hairless dog bred as a table delicacy, as well as, one of the little animals that guided the dead on their underworld journey. 5 1/2" long x 3" wide x 4" tall(ear to paw) dark red/brown burnished mottled finish- carrying ear of corn in its mouth. A little history of the Ancient Colima Pottery Dogs of Colima Mexico. Although Mesoamerican cultures produced pottery in abundance Colima's redware ceramics are acknowledged for their singular quality and artistry. Their color varies from deep mahogany to pale orange and the burnished surface is often motttled with a patina of manganese oxide. Colima artists created a wide variety of objects but they are most celebrated for perros cebados. Squat. Rotund ... moredogs, with short legs and rounded bodies. The cobby shape may have signified fertility, properity or the fact that dogs were fattened for consumption. Many Colima dogs carry ears of corn in their mouths. Maize was a staple food of this region for thousands of years. Testing has revealed that it wasa mainstay of the ancient Mesoamerican canine diet- and dog meat provided an essential source of protein for human inhabitants. These enigmatic figures were produced in what is now Mexico from the 3rd Century B.C. Dogs were considered to be useful on one's inevitable journey to the underworld and were therefore placed with the deceased as trusty companions. Please feel free to ask questions before purchase. 1828 1/4 real Colima Token Ficha Municipal
These"coins" are called hacienda tokens and were used to pay ranch workers for their labors. The families of the workers usually lived on the ranch land and were essentially treated very much like medieval serfs. The tokens could only be used in the ranch company store and so the workers were tied completely to the ranch owners. The store sold general goods including food. Tools, cooking utensils, clothing, tobacco, fuel oil, lamps, bedding, simple furniture and other essentials. The tokens come in many shapes and sizes and are made from brass, wood, white metal, copper and even bone. They are sometimes even painted as you have observed. The tokens usually state the name of the hacienda or ranch a denomination(they didn't use Peso or centavo as these were official National designations) The denominations were made up by the ... moreRanch owners and they pegged the company store prices in tokens to a relationship to the national currency. Values depend on the rarity of the item in the market place and the current collector interest. Prices range from a dollar or so to more than $100.
