So it may be a replacement. The hand is hardwood and drilled completely through, so the top would need a plug to be used. The head is hand forged iron I believe. I bought this because I liked it, but I don't normally collect this type of pipe, so please check the pictures for yourself. The handle has leather raccoon fur and an old wild turkey feather. The pipe has a beautiful patina and is in pretty good condition for it's age. It measures 15 1/2 inches long and the head is 7 inches long from the blade to the bowl. Antique Hand Axe Decorated Blacksmith Made Old Hickory Haft Very Early Hand Axe
Here is a very interesting antique hand axe. Or hatchet, obviously blacksmith made and decorated or marked with diagonal lines hammered into each side of the axw head. The head measured from the haft hole is approx. 4.25" in lengthwith the face of the head measuring approx. 2.5" The overall length of the haft is 17" The haft is made, I believe, of hickory, and has a slightly backwards curve that enhances balance. The haft has been with the axe head a very long time, long enough for the wood to have shrunk and left the head slightly loose at the head. Several iron wedges have been hammered into the head of the haft over the years to tighten the fit, and a later attempt to tighten the fit involved a nail which is visible extending out the lower haft hole. There are four small tacks around the base of the haft which at one time ... moremay have held a leather cover in place or they may have been merely ornamental. Whatever their purpose, they have been there for a very long time. The axe head is similiar in form to one illustrated by Neumann on page 25. Row 3, third from left( Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution ISBN:0-9605666-8-6) Which would bolster the possibility that this axe head, and possibly even the haft, dates from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries.
