American Needlework Treasures. Samplers and Silk Embroideries from the Collection of Betty Ring" By Betty Ring. Published by E.P. Dutton for the ... moreMuseum of American Folk Art: 1987. DISCUSSION: An important book which features almost 200 examples from the collection of one of America’s most noted experts on needlework& samplers. The specimens are grouped and discussed by state. If this would be your first book on samplers. Don't order it- you'll choke on the price when you see that it really isn't very imposing physically- in fact, it's a slim volume. The value is in the importance of Betty Ring's collection, and this book as a record of it. DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 8.5”x11” 112 pages, color illustrations. CONDITION NOTES: A little very light wear. RARE Greek Olbia-Ольвия Ancient Greek Pottery 15 Old fragments of dishes 3-5th century BC Olbia In the photo lineup in centimeters- millimeters Area settlements ... moreOlbia Pontic Olbia( Ὀλβία Ποντική. Its harbour was one of the main on the for the export of cereals. Fish, and slaves to Greece, and for the import of Attic goods to. Olbia and other Greek colonies along the north coast of the Black Sea in the 5th century B.C. The site of the Greek colony covers the area of fifty hectares and its fortifications form an isosceles triangle about a mile long and half a mile wide. The region was also the site of several villages(modern Victorovka and Dneprovskoe) which may have been settled by Greeks. As for the town itself. The lower town(now largerly submerged by the Bug river) was occupied chiefly by the dockyards and the houses of artisans. The upper town was a main residential quarter, composed of square blocks and centered on the agora. The town was ringed by a defensive stone wall with towers. The upper town was also the site of the first settlement on the site in the archaic period. There is evidence that the town itself was laid out over a grid plan from the 6th century- one of the first after the town of Smyrna. By the later period of settlement. The city also included an acropolis and, from the 6th century B.C. a religious sanctuary. In the early 5th century, a temple to Apollo Delphinios was also built on the site. History Archaic and Classical periods The Greek colony. Highly important commercially and endured for a millennium. The first evidence of Greek settlement at the site comes from Berezan Island where pottery has been found dating from the late 7th century. It is possible that it had been the site of an earlier native settlement and may even have been a peninsular rather than an island in antiquity. It is not thought that the Berezan town surv

Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) t

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

History of Ancient Pottery” By Samuel Birch. Published in London by John Murray in 1858. DISCUSSION: The first edition of what was the first comprehensive history of ancient pottery. Classical Greek Votive Pottery Cow 450 B.C.
This is one of the largest and rarest examples of Classical Greek art that we have seen. Dating to around 450 BC this beautiful and large naturalistic pottery sculpture of a Cow would have once served in a Temple in ancient Greece as a Fertility Votive. She is shown with full udders and teats. Her tail raised. She has flared nostrils and her mouth is partly open, head turned to the right. A very large, naturalistic terracotta with pathos. The classical Greeks were expert sculptors with terracotta as well as stone and marble. This being a glaring example of their expertise. A piece such as this was likely moulded in sections, then finished by hand. Length of terracotta alone: 13 inches. Height: 7 1/2 inches. Width: 8 inches. Condition: Limbs. Ears, horns, and tail fractured as shown; part of right foreleg re-attached following clean break. ... moreMounted as shown. Provenance: German private collection. 2008.
