Up for auction is a rare and beautiful Olmec winged pendant carved from green Serpentine stone. The elongated head shows cranial modification practiced ... moreby the Olmec culture. The septum is delicately drilled from both nostrils which meet in the middle. The mouth has a cleft palate showing the fleshy gums of the transformational carved head. Drilled twice on each side for suspension. Interestingly, this winged pendant would have originally been longer, but was re-carved in ancient times making it an “heirloom” piece. 1 7/8” height x 1 3/4” width. Provenance: Perla Cosme Collection, Florida, through descent from her family where it was originally acquired in the 1970’s.

ANTIQUE CARVED PRE-COLUMBIAN ART OLMEC STATUE MEXICAN ONYX ALABASTER FIGURINE 9”
striking! I really don’t have a lot of information about this carved statue. It looks to be in the Olmec style and appears to be quite old. I think the material might be Mexican onyx or maybe alabaster. Or it could be something else. The head is a little large. With a bulbous shape in the back. The ears are pierced. As well as the corners of the mouth and he is wearing a simple loincloth. Approximate Measurements: 9”H x 3½”W In good condition for its age. The arms are broken off. But are included and can be re-attached. Also. There are a few bruises/abrasions on the surface. interesting! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PAYMENT We accept the following forms of payment: Paypal Pay with credit cards or other PayPal funds. The Olmec inhabited the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico. The first signs of the Olmec are around 1400 BC in the city of San Lorenzo. The main Olmec settlement which was supported by two other centers, Tenochtitlan and Potrero Nuevo. The Olmec were master builders with each of the major sites containing ceremonial courts, house mounds, large conical pyramids and stone monuments including the colossal head that they are most known for. The Olmec civilization relied heavily on trade. Both between different Olmec regions and with other Mesoamerican societies. Because they were one of the earliest and most advanced Mesoamerican cultures at the time, they are often considered the mother culture of many other Mesoamerican cultures. Around 400 BC the eastern half of the Olmec’s lands was depopulated- possibly due to environmental changes. They may have also relocated after seismic or volcanic activity in the area. Olmec Culture Colossal Head Reproduction
This is a much smaller representation of one of the colossal stone heads that were carved from basalt by the Olmec Culture which existed much ear lier than the Maya. This one is wall mounted and looks exactly like one of the real ones. Just much smaller. The real Olmec Hea ds weigh as much as 40 to 50 tons. This has been on display in my home museum for some time now. But it's time to make some space. Don't miss this great display piece! More on the Olme c from Wikipedia below. The Olmec colossal heads are at least seventeen monumental stone representations of human heads sculpted from large boulders. The heads date from at least before 900 BC and are a distinctive feature of the civilization of ancient. 1] All portray mature men with fleshy cheeks. Flat noses, and slightly crossed eyes; their physical characteristics correspond to ... morea type that is still common among the inhabitants of and. The backs of the monuments often are flat. The boulders were brought from the mountains of Veracruz. Given that the extremely large slabs of stone used in their production were transported over large distances. Requiring a great deal of human effort and resources, it is thought that the monuments represent portraits of powerful individual Olmec rulers. Each of the known examples has a distinctive headdress. The heads were variously arranged in lines or groups at major Olmec centres, but the method and logistics used to transport the stone to these sites remain unclear. The discovery of a colossal head at in the nineteenth century spurred the first archaeological investigations of Olmec culture by in 1938. Seventeen confirmed examples are known from four sites within the on the. Most colossal heads were sculpted from spherical boulders but two from were re-carved from massive stone thrones. ANCIENT- EYES Archaistic Olmec Style Carved Face Mask Buckle Click on the thumbnails to view more photos This hard stone carving of a stylized face measures 2.25 inches x 2.75 inches x 1.5 inches in depth. It's colors range from a medium to dark green to a pale green with areas of both mottling and translucence. It also has natural inclusions in the stone with areas of dark brown or off white oxidation. It is carved in the style of old Olmec carvings. But it may be early 20th century. It may also be Chinese. Rather than Latin American in origin, but neither origin has been documented yet. It is unusual in that it has a mounting bracket extending from the reverse side. Similar brackets have been seen on occasion to allow for mounting as architectural components or as decorations in religious settings. If this stylized carving actually ... moreis older than our estimate. It would be worth a great deal more than our asking price. The mounting bracket would allow for this piece to be worn as a belt slide or buckle. Or as a large pendant. We prefer payment by Paypal. Precolumbian sculpture 56, Teotihuacán, Mexico, Olmec-like, prob. 2,000+ yrs old
Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 500 A.D. or older(That is 1,000 years or more before Cortez invaded Mexico and conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" by half an inch" I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico City, ... morein 1966 or 1967, when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. This head looks like Olmec art. The Olmecs. In the Vera Cruz/ Gulf Coast area, were one of the earliest great cultures of Mexico. Photos show front, side, and back.

In the modern-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. The Olmec flourished during Mesoamerica's Formative period. Dating roughly from as early as 1500 BCE to about 400 BCE. Pre-Olmec cultures had flourished in the area since about 2500 BCE Colossal heads The most recognized aspect of the Olmec civilization are the enormous helmeted heads. As no known pre-Columbian text explains them. These impressive monuments have been the subject of much speculation. Once theorized to be ballplayers. It is now generally accepted that these heads are portraits of rulers, perhaps dressed as ballplayers. Museum Quality Costa Rica Belt Celt Pendant Olmec Blue Jade Pre Columbian Jade
Costa Rican Blue Jade Belt Celt Pendant ca 500- 800 AD Dimension: 16 cm by 5.8 cm by 1.8 cm Material: Highly translucent blue jadeite Provenance: Central Valley of Costa Rica You will never find any better quality blue jade that this. Especially as an ancient artifact. This belt pendant is made from a highly translucent aqua colored jadeite. Light even passes through the thickest portion of the celt. This simply an amazing museum quality artifact! In typical fashion. It is highly polished on the front, with a satin smooth polish on the rear and sides. This pendant was made from a larger full celt, that was string cut from each side until a narrow septum was left connecting the two halves. The septum was snapped and this piece was made from one of those halves. The septum on the rear remains quite visible, but care-taking grinding was done ... moreto smooth the edges. There are two conically drilled holes(drilled from the back) for suspension. Although heavily polished, mineralized deposits remain in areas, especially in the under cuts and pitting on the celt. The pendant comes with a custom museum mount. Which is poitioned to have the septum showing, but with minor bending, it can be changed to have the polished front showing. Available provenance will be provided to purchaser. T his piece is absolutely guaranteed(money back) to be ancient and authentic as described. Buyer pays $15.00 shipping in the US. The Aztecs. Mayas, Olmecs, Toltecs, and other Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and Central America carved jadeite for use as ornaments, amulets, and badges of rank. Nearly all of these Meso-American jades are of various shades of green, with emerald green the most highly prized color among the Aztecs. ... moreThe jade carvings range from plaques, figurines, small masks, pendants, to of course, tools and weapons. The widespread use of jade died out in Meso-America after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Elsewhere in the ancient world jade was widely used by primitive peoples as tools and weapons in the Neolithic, especially in Europe, Mexico, Asia, New Zealand, and North Africa(including ancient Egypt) The best-known finds are from the lake dwellings of Switzerland, western France, and China. Here's a darling little green briolette shaped hand carved jade pendant trimmed in 24kt gold vermeil. We picked these up in Bombay recently from a wholesaler who had kept them in a warehouse for decades. Reputed by a credible source to be circa the 1950's. Our own experts told us it is certainly genuine jadeite. The carving is difficult to date, as artisans have been producing little hand-carved jade pendants for centuries. However the art form is dying out, and this is a beautiful handicraft possessing a very rich and beautiful appearance. Identified as being carved from some of the world's finest jadeite deposits, this particular shade of jadeite is highly sought after,

Thank you for viewing ny auctions! The item for sale here is a Vintage Mexican silver spoon. This is a demitasse spoon. Used for small bowls. The stem reads"Mexico" and on the back it is stamped"Alpaca, Mexico" The bowl of the spoon has a very detailed(for the space provided) design of the Mayan/Aztec calendar. A great piece of Mexican folk art. That has been kept in great condition. There are some minor knicks to the back of the bowl. Some tarnish that can be rectified with a good polish. Pre Columbian Mexico Pre Classic Olmec Jade CELT
Pre Columbian Mexico Pre Classic Olmec Jade CELT Amazing large Pre Columbian celt This piece is unique since it has a very comfortable shape for the hand to grasp it. There is a rounded end and immediately below a depression that is perfectly ergonomic. An expert in Pre Columbian artifacts mentioned o us that he had never seen one that has the depression for the rope to attach this as an ax on a handle. I believe this depression is to fit comfortably onto a hand and prevent the tool from slipping off. The photos do not depict it clearly but it is smooth on the working end. The stone is light green possibly from the Guerrero area and may possibly be Mezcala. Shows age and mineral deposits. It is wrapped in genuine gold wire and it is suspended from a fine cord of rolled leather. Really nice. It will fit a 16 in. neck easily. So it is unisex. If you prefer, a gold chain will work, too. Olmec ruins from the jungles in Cordoba,Vera Cruz
Unbelievable collection of Olmec pottery and jade figurine fragments I spent 18 months in the jungles building bodegas. Have paper work from the Mexican Dept. of Archeology verifying the site which was about 4 to 6 feet below ground level. These photos don't do justice for the pieces shown. Also have flint arrowheads, amulets, ceramic whistles, even a masa grinding rock. Will come back and revise the site with better photos and some more history on how this art came into my possession. They make great gifts for that special someone, when put in a shadowbox type frame. Also a primitive almost Neanderthal skull carved out of a rock. Pieces will start as low as about 35 to 45 dollars and up. On Jul-22-13 at 14:34:44 PDT. Seller added the following information: I have many. Many different pieces.
