Constantine I & Crispus/ Lot 2 Rare ancient Roman coins/Legion soldiers / Wreath
SquareTrade © AP6.0 s672 Coinstantine I and his son Crispus as caesar Lot of 2 Lot of two Roman coins AE follis 1 8-19mm. Uncleaned as pictured. Well centered rare and interesting nice specimens. Original glossy green patina over ancient silvering. Authenticity guaranteed You are bidding on an original ancient Roman coin as described and pictured above. Flavius Julius Crispus. Also known as Flavius Claudius Crispus and Flavius Valerius Crispus was a Caesar of the Roman Empire. He was the first-born son of Constantine I and Minervina. Birth Crispus' year and place of birth are uncertain. He is considered likely to have been born between 299 and 305. Somewhere in the Eastern Roman Empire. His mother Minervina was either a concubine or a first wife to Constantine. Nothing else is known about Minervina. His father served as a hostage ... morein the court of Eastern Roman Emperor Diocletian in Nicomedia. Thus securing the loyalty of Caesar of the Western Roman Empire Constantius Chlorus. Father of Constantine and grandfather of Crispus. In 307. Constantine allied to the Italian Augusti. And this alliance was sealed with the marriage of Constantine to Fausta. Daughter of Maximian and sister of Maxentius. The marriage of Constantine to Fausta has caused modern historians to question the status of his relation to Minervina and Crispus. If Minervina was his legitimate wife. Constantine would have needed to secure a divorce before marrying Fausta. This would have required an official written order signed by Constantine himself. But no such order is mentioned by contemporary sources. This silence in the sources has led many historians to conclude that the relationship between Constantine and Minervina was informal and to assume her to have been an unofficial lover. However. Minervina may have already been dead by 307. A widowed Constantine would need no divorce order. Neither the true nature of the relationship between Constantine and Minervina nor the reason Crispus came under the protection of his father will ever proba

As the youngest son of Nero Drusus(Tiberius' brother) and of Antonia the younger(who was the daughter of Marc Antony and Octavia) Suffering from ill-health and an alarming lack of social skills. For which most believed him mentally handicapped, he received no public office from Augustus except once being invested as an augur(an official Roman soothsayer) Under Tiberius he held no office at all. At the close of the century, mail was phased out amongst the nobles(e.g.knights) except in the camail of the bascinet and at the edge of the hauberk. The cuirass was almost universally worn covered throughout its lifespan as a form of armour. Thus, the globose form of the breast-armour of the prince. In his effigy in canterbury cathedral. 1376, intimates that a cuirass(as well as a hauberk) is to be considered to have been covered by the royalty-emblazoned jupon of the prince. The cuirass was always made long enough to rest on the hips. If it had been suspended ... moreby the shoulders. Its weight would have likely exhausted(and chafed) its wearer. About the middle of the century. The b reastplate of the cuirass was made in two parts; the lower adjusted to overlap the upper. Held together with a strap or sliding rivet in order to add flexibility to the advantages plate armour had over mail. In the second half of the 15th century, the cuirass was occasionally superseded by the brigandine jacket, the medieval forerunner of the flak jacket. In essence, the brigandine jacket was constructed of metal plates sewn into a fabric jacket. The fabric was generally a rich material, and was lined throughout with overlapping scales of metal which were attached to the jacket by rivets, having their heads, like studs, visible on the outside. Their use never altogether ceased and in modern armies mounted cuirassiers armed as in earlier days with breast and back plates. YOU ARE BIDDING ON THE ITEM PICTURED! The founding of Rome goes back to the very early days of civilization. It is so old. It is today known as'the eternal city' The Romans believed that their city was founded in the year 753 BC. Modern historians though believe it was the year 625 BC. Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves. They then instead had a council known as the'senate' which ruled over them. From this point on one speaks of the'Roman Republic'The word'Republic' itself comes from the Latin(the language of the Romans) words'res publica' ... morewhich mean'public matters' or'matters of state' The senate under the kings had only been there to advise the king. Now the senate appointed a consul, who ruled Rome like a king, but only for one year. This was a wise idea, as like that, the consul ruled carefully and not as a tyrant, for he knew that otherwise he could be punished by the next consul, once his year was up.Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans. The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all. The second highest class were the equestrians(sometimes they are called the'knights' Their name means the'riders' as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called'patricians' All the real power in Rome lay with them. The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC- almost 500 years. The Roman empire in the end was overrun by millions of barbaria
Ancient Roman Military Stamped Legionary Brick of First Italian Legion 100 A.D.
A very rare. Ancient Roman Terracotta brick, impressed with the mark of the First Italian Legion and dating to approximately 100 A.D. The brick is of square form. The sides and back cut coarsely and the front smoothed off and impressed with legionary stamp. Bricks such as this were the primary method of construction of Rome's many frontier forts. Roman tile-makers very occasionally stamped a brick with the insignia of the relevant legion, affirming its and the building's status as military property. This example contains the stamp of the First Italian Legion, and likely originates from the ancient Province of Moesia Inferior(modern-day Romania-Bulgaria) where the First Legion was stationed in the 1st-2nd Century A.D. The First Legion was involved in the construction and fortification of Trajan's Bridge. An over 1 kilometer wide ... moremasterpiece of engineering, the completion of which was the prelude to the invasion and eventual subjugation of Dacia(modern-day Romania) Dimensions: 7 1/4 x 7 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches. Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant
Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant measures: 68 mm/ 77 mm weight: 27 g The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the empire reached its greatest ... moreextent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. Here are two very nice, very clean, ... more19th century honey yellow citrine faceted Pears from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, citrine has remained a very popular gemstone through the 20th century. These are very fine golden honey yellow colored semi-precious gemstones. As you can see from the photo enlargements here, they are to the eye completely transparent and free from inclusions, and possess exceptional sparkle and luster. They are very clean, water clear, and very bright. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstones have been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. These gemstones have great luster and sparkle. And to the eye are completely transparent, but they are not absolutely flawless. Tr
Antique 19thC ½ct Siberian Tourmaline Ancient Roman Gemstone
Exquisite Antique Genuine Natural Siberian One-Half Carat Neon Pink Tourmaline Faceted Marquise. CLASSIFICATION: Pink Tourmaline Faceted Marquise. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: 7mm. Width: 4mm. Depth: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.52 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient Roman world 2.000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, which means"mixed" Bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" parcels. Here's an exquisitely colored antique pink marquise cut faceted tourmaline ... morefrom the Southern Urals, hand faceted in the 19th century. Pink tourmalines are rather uncommon, probably the most valuable of the ordinary varieties of tourmaline. There is substantially more demand than supply, so thus oftentimes can be quite costly. The color of this specimen has been alternately described as hot pink, neon pink, bubble gum pink, even screaming pink. Let’s just say the color is very intense, and quite vibrant. Pink tourmaline was held in such high regard by the(last) Empress of China, Tz'u Hsi, that she purchased bought almost a ton of it from a mine in California, and was eventually laid to rest(eternally) on a carved tourmaline pillow. Much favored by European Renaissance and Victorian Royalty, tourmaline tends to be characterized by the presence of small colorless inclusions. This semi-precious gemstone does have several very minute inclusions which while not discernible to the eye. Can just be made out under a 5x glass. But while not absolutely flawless, it is nonetheless a quite satisfactory specimen, certainly eye clean, and with fantastic color. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstone has been hand-faceted. The coa

We also have available handcrafted Greek black leather cords. DETAIL: Amber had great value and significance to the Assyrians. Egyptians, Etruscans, Phoenicians, and Greeks. During the 2nd millennium B.C. amber was ... morein large part responsible for a network of roads built to facilitate the trade. The first trade roads archaeologists have evidence for are from the ancient Biblical/Mesopotamian city of Ur(home of Abraham) By about 1500 B.C. many of the roads in eastern and central Europe had linked together into an extensive trading network known as the“Amber Routes” Here's a beautiful antique amber gemstone pendant, mounted onto a contemporary silver electroplated chain. The gemstone is produced from“reconstituted” amber, i.e. smaller pieces of amber which were heated, mixed with a binding agent such as resin, and then pressed into a mold. While solid amber is much more costly, reconstituted amber has been used for centuries to produce inexpensive amber beads and“gemstones” In fact many of the faceted amber“gemstones” found both in antique as well as contemporary gemstones are of reconstituted amber. Molded amber/resin was quite commonly used in Eastern Europe and Central Asia for centuries up through the Victorian era to produce ersatz gemstones. With the addition of various dyes and coloring agents, artisans of the era produced brightly colored“gemstones” possessing ver

It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except
