Pre-Columbian Figural Vessel - Nayarit Culture / 200 BC - 250 AD/ Western Mexico
Pre-Columbian Mexican Sitting Figural Vessel Nayarit Culture. 250 BC- 200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Pre-Columbian terra cotta figural vessel from Western Mexico. Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

HUICHOL Peoples Native Folk Yarn Art Panel Jalisco/Nayarit Mexico #01
Folk Yarn art from the Huichol peoples of Jalisco/Nayarit Mexico. We are pleased to be able to offer for your consideration this colorful piece of Folk yarn art from Mexico. The folk artist of the Huichol peoples from the Jalisco/ Nayarit region of Mexico have become well known for their colorful yarn art. The panel offered is a fine example of this folk art technique. The Huichol yarn paintings consist of commercial yarn pressed into boards coated with wax and resin and are derived from a ceremonial tablet called a nearika. These yarn paintings first appeared in 1962 in Guadalajara and were derived from“nierikas” a small board or disc with a hole or mirror in the center. Nierikas were initially produced by shamans to represent visions they experienced while consuming peyote. Then left as offerings to the gods in places such as caves, temples ... moreand streams. These modern yarn paintings quickly proved popular and were imitated. They have also developed into complex designs which can take weeks to complete. This panel looks to be very much in keeping with some Shamanic vision. The figures rendered in this design are very abstract. The writing. In Spanish, on the back of this panel we believe, explains the meaning. This framed yarn art panel is approximately 23 7/8 inches square. Mounted under glass in a simple matte black frame that measures 25 1/4 inches square. This framed panel weighs approximately 8 pounds. Condition- The overall condition of this framed piece of folk art is very good. The frame is a bit thirsty and could use some furniture polish. But once cleaned up, it will be good to display. If you are a collector of native Folk Art. And the folk art of Mexico in particular, this yarn art is a fine example of the work of the Huichol peoples. 2 Antique Clay figures Man & Woman, Nayarit ?. Pre Columbian Pottery Very Old
These two figures were bought at an Estate Sale from a very Important Oregon Artist who loved Mexico. These were in his private collection and appear to be artifacts from a dig done decades ago or maybe even much longer ago. They could be hundreds of years old or thousands. I am no expert so I just don't know. They loose a little dust every time they are handled so I was very careful in photographing them. Please ask questions before bidding if you are not sure. I am no expert, just know that these appear to be a red clay and as you can see from the photographs some of the areas of each figure are worn off and a dust comes off of them when handled because they are so old. I have never had anything this old so will pack very gently when shipping them to you and if you have any special shipping instructions I will do my best to comply.

A Rare Pre-Columbian Nayarit Vessel in the Form of Two Joined Standing Dogs
Rare Pre-Columbian Nayarit Vessel in the Form of Two Joined Standing Dogs. Protoclassic ca. 100 B.C.A.D. 250. This unique hollow ceramic vessel in the form of either two joined dogs or one two-headed dog. With red-orange burnished slip mottled with areas black manganese oxide within the surface, dates to the Protoclassic Period of the West Mexican Nayarit sculptural tradition and is related to the San Sebastian Red sub-style, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250. There have been many speculations on what significance or symbolism there might be regarding conjoined dogs. This type of sculpture was probably an inspiration to Pos-Columbian artists such as the Surrealists. FSA:EA Comparisons: Please see: Sculpture of Ancient West Mexico.
