This is a striking piece of brown ware pottery from Chupicraro culture. Western Mexico. It is possibly from Colima or Nayarit cultures of Mexico. It is intact and good condition. Rounded bottom and flared rim. Rim has four decorative small carvings. There are good manganese deposits and root marks and a good earthy smell when inside is wetted. There are charming smoke clouds from the uneven glazing and shadings blending from black. Brown, tan and gray colors. I bought this from a collector that was not sure of the exact culture but it is authentically pre Columbian work with nice rounded lines. CA 500BC- 200 AD Diameter 8 inches. Pre-Columbian Carved Stone Bird Whistle – Hand Carved from Petrified Wood
This pre-Columbian bird whistle was hand carved from a piece of petrified wood(fossilized wood) The piece was made so that the growth rings appear at the position of the bird’s wing on one side. Wood grain can be seen all over the piece. And tool marks are clearly visible as well. The whistle measures 2” long, and is about 5/8” in diameter. The piece is in excellent condition, with no breaks or repairs. It is a lovely and rare piece, and you are not likely to see another like this. Horsman began making the Babyland Rag dolls in 1907 with these lifelike lithographed faces. This Dutch dressed doll is 15" tall and is all original. The only rip I see is on the doll's back(see picture) It is very firmly stuffed. Clean and in overall good condition.no odors at all. The right leg is turned inward slightly. The clothing still has it's stiffness and he(or she) is wearing wooden clog shoes that appear to have been hand whittled. The light'line' that you can see in his face is not a tear, it's like a light scratch on the fabric. This doll is over 100 years old.what a treasure! It measures approximately 7 ¾ inches in height. 2 ¼ inches deep and 1 ½ inches wide. It is approximately 2 pounds in weight. My husband worked in Santo Domingo in the late 1960s and often made trips into the interior on his free time. He was interested in this period of history and purchased these pieces from the local Dominicans there. This piece is in very good condition. After centuries of being plowed or tilled over, the heads usually break off from the bodies The Chupícuaro culture was located in the mountains of central Mexico and is named for the area in which the artifacts have been found. It is an important pre-Hispanic archeological site from the late pre-classical or formative period; located west of the Mexican Plateau. On the hills nearby the Lerma River and its tributary Coroneo or Tiger River; which currently under water because of the Solis dam. Just 7 kilometers from Acamaro ... morein the Guanajuato State, near the Michoacán State border in Mexico Little is known about the history of this site. And it was not until 1946, due to a dam construction, that the first explorations were performed, discovering pottery objects and tombs. The place is currently below dam water, although there are surrounding areas still being explored. According to several sources. This is a wonderful old wood hand carved decorative tumi figure made by a local artisan in Cuzco. Peru. This Pre Columbian artifact replica is represented as the kind of artifact that many Peruvians have hanging in their homes much as we might hang a crucifix or a political figure photo in a government building. The tumi has symbolic and practical meaning for Incas and indigenous population in Peru. It was used in rituals, sacrifice, in surgery and any number of cutting tasks. Usually made of bronze or stone it was also produced in pounded flat copper tumi replicas for currency, or as collectibles. They have now become very popular as a collectors item of Pre Columbian Peruvian artifacts and reminders of ritual usage in ceremonies and inca sacrifices of llamas, but also children and their enemies. Pre-Columbian - XXL Chupícuaro brownware tripod bowl
This is a very large Chupícuaro brownware tripod bowl. It weighs 4.6Lbs and is supported by three stout. Pierced mammiform legs. On the outside just below the rim an incised line encircles the bowl with a similar, lighter line doing the same on top of the rim. It is burnished terracotta and a lovely brown color. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE. Fortunately excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics. Formed ... morewithout a potting wheel, elevate objects intended for daily use into highly sophisticated artistic achievements. Dimensions: Over 12 ¾” diameter. 4 ½” high. Condition: This is a solid piece in excellent condition bearing some evidence of ancient manganese dendrites and fire clouding. There are a few patches of ceramic flaking evident in the interior and a few much smaller flakes on the exterior. Otherwise. It is completely intact. Provenance- This artifact was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt. A career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Central Mexico between the mid 1930s and mid 1960s. This is an adorable polychrome pottery vessel with two small lizards perched on top. Looking at you. It is from the Huari/Nazca region of Peru. Very good condition with good paint and glaze. It has smoke clouds in the glaze likely from the uneven firing. Also manganese deposits and some root markings inside. Good earthy smell when wetted inside. Pre-Columbian Funerary Bag
I know little about the object than what I was told by my grandmother who acquired this in Ecuador in 1965. It is a"funerary bag" that was carried by family members at the funeral of a family member. It is supposed to contain small pieces of hair and fingernail clippings of the deceased and apparently wards off evil influences. I was further told that the item was late pre-Columbian. Or early colonial in date(16th-17th century? The bag is constructed of fragments of woven cloth that bear intricate geometric shapes. Four figure(dolls) are affixed to the front. The item was placed within a shadow box by a professional framer in 1997 to protect it and to provide a better means of displaying the piece. Description This authentic genuine antique Pre-Columbian Colima(possibly Jalizco) 200BC-200AD terracotta pottery zoomorphic vessel jug. Is beautifully hand formed in red earthenware clay as a white nosed coati laying atop a large gourd with a small snake grasped in its claws, with the coati's head raised snarling and mouth open to act as the spout for pouring. There is a short filling spout to its back with small stirrup handle connecting the two. The front arms of the coati have applied ring armlets which appear on early Colima pottery human(gingerbread man) figures. All the details like protruding eyes, ears, flaring nostrils, fangs(teeth) front limbs, armlets, toes(claws) snake, gourd details and tail as well as spout and stirrup handle, are hand rolled/modelled and applied to the body of the vessel. This amazing dramatic piece has ... morea part hand burnished surface to the upper part(shoulder) of the gourd and to the filling spout and top of the strirrup handle. The protruding parts of the coati figure have acquired partial polish from handling. Much of the surface has encrusted calcification and deposits from burial. The vessel does have old very neat museum quality restoration to the gourd. Running as a faint line join across the back of the base and up the sides and travelling forward under the front limbs of the Coati, with repairs to the toes(claws) which lay on the gourd surface behind the snakes body and has one thumb missing. The restoration is hardly noticeable and does not have any over painting, just very accurately glued and filled along the line with suitably coloured material(please see photos) This wonderful piece came from a 19th century collection in an old local Norfolk Estate and has been in our own collection for several decades. Really cute rare authentic Pre Columbian Mayan pottery artifact ceremonial or ritual rattle. Stand goes with it. This Mayan piece is nicely proportioned and a cute artistic artifact. Pre Columbian cultures often used music with strings. Flutes, rattles, and rattle vessels in rituals and ceremonies and the Mayans too. I am not sure if the rattles might also be placed in tombs to scare away bad spirits. They would be shaken for sound. The item shown was an Estate find some time ago. When I bought it. I was told by the family member holding the sale that all they knew for certain was that the decorated calligraphy was framed in the 1920s in El Paso. I have no idea how old the framed piece is, but an appraiser told me it was possibly from the 1800s. it has enriched our home for several years- sadly some unexpected events necessitate its sale. Great way to wear ancient history now. This pre Columbian. By far, Jurassic period dinosaur jawbone with teeth fossil,was dug up and is now mineralized. It's teeth still in place. From teeth it appears this was a herbivore dinosaur that ground it's food with its teeth, not tear it. A bit of different piece of jewelry, it will be a crowd pleader. It was wire wrapped and has a waxed cotton cord which can be replaced with a chain if you like. My dentist took X-rays of the teeth and some still amazingly gave a pulp space. tairona tumbaga Narigera
I just bought this Tairona Tumbaga Butterfly shaped narigera from a world traveler last Saturday with to other pieces that I am selling in a separate auction but I illustrate all three of these as picture# 6. Please look at my other sales for these two other pieces. It look like gold but is a mix of copper. I tested it for 6Kt and it did not test positive. This butterfly shaped Narigera is a nose piece worn by Tairona Women. All that I know about this was collected from this traveller that was selling all of his household and going to a nursing home. It must be old and this guy had travelled around the world many times around the middle of 1900's. It has a hoop that I believe was later soldered on to it to make it a pendant. It measures about 1.3/4 in. wide and about 15/16 in. from top to bottom. I was told that Tumbaga is a very low ... moregrade gold but if it is it must be 1 or 2% if that.

Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro decorated bowl
This buff terracotta Chupícuaro bowl has extremely interesting decoration. The interior is covered by a pattern of brown. Concentric shapes. From rim to rim there is a broad line of red slip bisecting this pattern at an angle. Surprisingly, this red slip line is transparent as the underlying brown pattern can clearly be seen through the red slip, almost like a highlighter. The rim is covered in red slip. Turning the bowl over, on the bottom you will see a similar although not as clear pattern of concentric lines bisected by another rim to rim broad band of transparent red slip. Curiously, the two bands of red slip do not line up in the cardinal directions but rather, if continued, would intersect each other at an angle. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located ... morein the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE. Fortunately excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics. Formed without a potting wheel, elevate objects intended for daily use into highly sophisticated artistic achievements. Dimensions: 6 ½” diameter. 2 3/8” high. Condition: There is an approx. 1” wide area of damage to the rim along with a variety of smaller nicks as you go around the rim. There is a compression fracture on the bottom and a distinct area of fire clouding. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt. A career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Western and Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. Rare Chancay artifact of a woman on death rattle ceremonial piece. From central Costa Rican culture and used in death rituals. It rattles when shaken. Good paint and comes with its own stand. It is rather rough hewn texture I believe when created but it adds to the piece. Many Chancay pieces have gray beige tone with black painted designs and this is no different. PRE COLUMBIAN - MOCHE culture "DOUBLE FLYING BIRD" pendant, ca. 100 to 800 AD
A very neat looking pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) stylized double sided flying bird pendant carved from orange spondylous shell. Sourced from coastal Peru, probably Moche culture dating from about 100 to 800 AD, but possibly Lambayeque or Sican, dating as late as 1400 AD. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, about 19 mm(about 3/4 inch) wide, by about 19 mm tall, and 4 mm in thickness. The flat style pendant has a suspension hole on each side of the back that pierces the back near the corners and comes out through the narrow sides(so the suspension holes cannot be seen from the front) The holes are at the bottom sides of the bird. Upside down from what we might think. The early Peruvian peoples often strung pendants this way(or sewed them on their clothes) apparently caring more about seeing it themselves ... morethan from another's point of view.
