This auction is for an authentic Huari canteen from about 700 AD. The vessel measures 6 inches wide x 7.75 inches tall with a mirror-like burnished surface. The top of the canteen is painted black with rayed eyes and the neck has a chevron design. The lugs are intact. Although I regard this as Huari. There is a chance that this is very late Nazca. If you take a look at p 48 of Proulx's book, A Sourcebook of Nazca Iconography, you will find a description of late phase Nazca items that fits the designs and finish on this canteen. However, the shape of the canteen is unlike other Nazca canteens I have seen. One Ceramic Pre-Classic Mayan Female Figure from PLAYA DE LOS MUERTOS. ULUA VALLEY, HONDURAS, measuring 6-1/4" high and dates in the early Pre-Columbian period. 600 to 300 BC. It is obviously a pregant female indicated by her breasts and the protruding stomach. She wears a simple headdress and simple ear spools. The figure is solid. Dense and heavy weighing about 1-1/2 pounds indicative of the Pre-Classic era. The surface is quite dark which may indicate the type of clay in the area. How it was processed or what was in the soil where it was buried. Excellent example of a Pre-Classic figure especially the eye design. This is a grey volcanic stone sukia. Or shaman figure, from the Atlantic Watershed region formerly inhabited by the Guetar(or Huetar) Indians. These figures frequently have one or both hands holding a tubular object up to the mouth. Others, like this one, seem to be contemplating or gazing. In the photos. It may appear that the nose tip is chipped but that is not the case. The nose tip was intentionally formed in 3 nodules and is completely intact. This is an authentic piece and not one of those museum cast copies which seem to show up all too often.
