Vera Cruz Smiling Articulated Soriente pottery figure from the Gulf coast of Mexico. Remojadas, Ca. 600 to 800 AD. Hollow molded buff terracotta standing male figure having separately made, articulated arms. The molded facial detail shows a small face with almond shaped eyes, small nose and realistic mouth, parted and showing teeth. Some red remains on the headdress and there is a working whistle blowhole at the very top. Size: 10-1/2 inches H. + Custom metal mount. Provenance: Ex, Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany.

A very uncommon and neat looking pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) Moche culture ceramic stylized Female-shaped whistle wearing a bold head dress or hat. From coastal Peru, dating from about 100 to 800 AD, more or less. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, about 55 mm(over 2 inches) in length, about 13 mm tall when viewed from the side and 26 mm(about one inch) at the widest part. The left part of the hat has a fracture that appears to have been repaired The Moche culture was very creative in various art forms, especial figural and sculpture works. Symbolism was a very important part of their culture. this is a very unusual whistle and still very collectible despite the repair. Note: I tested whistle with canned air and a loud sound came through. So it still works quite well. Please check the dimensions. This is a great piece of history. Little Cuestas cigar box from Cuesta-Rey& Co Tampa, Fl is a great piece to have. The box is in excellent shape for being over a century old. Print on the back of the box is crisp and clear, very little ware. Includes city clerks stamped signature as well as the official stamp of the city of Tamp Florida at the time. Antique Pre Columbian colonial pottery artifact relic native made smoked pipe
This interesting piece is a carved black ware pottery pipe that has been smoked. This does not mean broken in for your use. It has a cute turtle sitting over the bowl. An interesting motif since one of many myths the inca's had was that the world rests on the back of a turtle. It has carved geometric designs in stem. At first I thought it was a real Pre Columbian relic. I had it assessed by a major Gallery. Artemis a Gallery and it is actually an old colonial piece from the 1709s or 1800s. Still handmade by indigenous natives with markings and designs used for centuries. It's a fun piece for a collector. Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro ceremonial offering bowl
This terracotta Chupícuaro ceremonial offering bowl has an interesting abstract design arranged in a spiral on the sloping interior surface. This design has been executed in a type of negative painting technique where the buff substrate is an integral and intricate part of the pattern. Inside and out the rim is wrapped in a 1/2” band of red slip with a fire clouded underside accented by an undulating line. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 250 CE. Luckily excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the ... morearea which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel making the quality of their craftsmanship all the more remarkable. As observed by Richard E. W. Adams in his book Prehistoric Mesoamerica. There is no doubt that Chupícuaro represents an exuberant ceramic tradition in full flower. Dimensions: 4 ¾” diameter. 2” high. Condition: There is a compression fracture running across approx. 1/3 of the bowl culminating in some lost ceramic at one end point. There is also some red slip loss. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt. A career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Western and Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. During that time he amassed a fine collection of many pre-Columbian artifacts which he kept and displayed in his home in Austin. Guaranteed authentic.

This is a wonderful full size olla vessel that is broad and has double handles. It is Mayan with vibrant rich colors and designs well preserved. There are multiple rows of pictures and geometric patterns but I cannot say I understand them. The vessel broadens to a center ridge and angles in to the rim with different patterns in each area. Lovely creams. Reds and blacks raise havoc over this olla and it is extremely pleasing in color and overall design. It has some scratching to be expected. Vintage Writting Desk Original Laptop
There is damage to this beautiful lap desk. The purple velvet table top is not attached but fits in nicely and has a design all around it. It has the original glass ink wells. Key and pen compartment. The outside has some damage like nicks and a small gash on the right side. Not sure of the exact year but believe it is late 1800's to early 1900's. Original Rubbing of Dos Pilas Stela 1 RARE Original Rubbing of Dos Pilas Stela 1 This is a very rare. Original, one of a kind, rubbing of"Stela 1" of Dos Pilas. It is an authentic artwork and has not been embellished. The overall piece measures approximately 61 1/2” wide by 144” long. The image itself is approximately 52" wide by 130" long. The rubbing is in a sepia tone on an off white(natural) muslin cloth. It is in excellent condition and has been stored rolled. In the lower right corner is written: Dos Pilas El Peten Guatemala. It was purchased in the 1970’s from the original creator. The rubbing was part of a private collection of Mayan artifacts and was displayed in the Granby Dinosaur Museum in Massachusetts for several years. The photos show the full rubbing along with detail shots of the head and base. A composite ... moreimage of multiple photos is also included due to the size of the rubbing and the distortion in the full image photo. There is a black colored line at the very top of the rubbing(see the head detail) The creator was in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. The exact date the rubbing was made is not known. We believe it would have been created between 1963 and the early 1970's. The creator was told about the Mayan stela by locals who brought him to its location in the jungle. He made the rubbing then left it in the jungle to dry several days until he returned for it. It is believed that he made the rubbing prior to the complete discovery of the Dos Pilas ruins. Rubbings of the stela are no longer allowed. The rubbing was identified to be of the Dos Pilas Sela 1 by renowned Mayanist Ian Graham of the Peabody Museum. We are aware of one other rubbing in existence made of Dos Pilas Stela 1. It is in the collection of Tulane University and was created by Dr. Merle Green Robertson. This is a great Moche stirrup portrait vessel. Made in Peru by the Moche Culture that antededed the Incas. They were prolific artisans. This vessel has checkerboard geometric patterns with Cross shapped glyphs on it. There appears to be a few clear mineral deposits but overall there are not a lot or root markings. The piece is guraranteed authentic and was bought from Artemis Gallery who deals with antiquities. COA is available on request. 96 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE This is an original circa 1910 to 1915 hand carved antique CW parker carousel horse. Made in Abilene Kansas. It’s from a traveling carousel. The horse is in the jumping position and features an open mouthed head in an elevated and canted position and features a carved cascading mane. A pleasant expression, a wide jeweled peytral(breast band) and is further embellished with a patriotic flag on a jeweled saddle blanket. There is also a nice raised cantle at the back of the saddle. The figure has glass eyes, and also a jeweled bridal. I personally would value this 100-year-old horse at the least $5000 plus. This full sized wooden horse measures 38” from chest to rump and is 43” tall. It has an elaborate stand as shown and painted horseshoes. It has some flaking of paint and cracks but is ... morein overall excellent condition. It was taken apart and restored in the 1960s by professional restorers and could easily be brought up to par. I have owned this horse since the early 1960s and was the one who had it restored. Ken Weaver(Carousel specialist) suggests the best way buyers can avoid potential reproductions is to insist on a written receipt at the time of purchase. The receipt should clearly state to which vintage factory or carver the figure is attributed. The approximate year(s) of production and a provenance, a history of ownership. A complete provenance would include the original carousel in which the figure was installed and a list of all subsequent owners down to the current seller. Here are some basic points. Which will help you separate most reproductions from vintage original carousel figures(all of which this horse has) 1) Almost all vintage figures have pole holes. A hole which passes vertically through the entire body of the figure. Pole holes are generally located at the balance point of the figure.
