Tlatilco, 1200-800 BCE- Tlatilco artists were informed by Olmec influences, as their culture engaged in extensive long distance trade and grew enamored with Olmec greenstone sculptures. Hence Tlatilco creatives produced playful baby style figurines such as this example, with its corpulent body and infantile position. Where it departs from the Olmec iconography, however, is in the explicit delineation of the baby's male genitalia. The piece has numerous perforations for suspension and was likely intended to be a central pendant of a piece of wearable art. It may also have been an offering buried with the deceased. Wood Ear Plugs, Moche, Peru | Pre Columbian
This incredibly well preserved set of Pre-Columbian wood ear plugs on which the geometrically decorated is attributed to the Moche horizon of Peru. C.100-800AD. Not wearable today due to the fragile nature of the wood there are certainly few other such pairs that have survived this well. Many wonder how the earrings remained in place when worn. This was easily achieved by wearing attaching a string to both ends of the jewelry and literally tying together back behind the neck. The front flat flares measure about 2.5" outer diameter. The tubular wearing surface is about just slightly thicker than 1inch(about 1 3/16" and overall length with front flare is about 3 7/8" inch. The pair is from the collection of my Grandfather who recently passed away. It's dirty has scratches/ scuffs and the top looks to have been cut off maybe 1" for some reason and it shows spots of rust on front and back is rusty. it looks awesome and it is old. Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro grater bowl
This is a very nicely shaped Chupícuaro grater bowl with sides that slope down from a broad rim to the rough. Cross-hatched surface at the bottom. The fairly deep incisions were used for grinding and grating peppers. The bowl is red slip on buff terracotta, the inside decorated with alternating bands of red and natural buff with a pattern circling at the halfway point that resembles a modified Greek key, an interesting artistic convergence in ceramics decoration occurring at a comparable time, but independently and halfway around the world. There is a red slip band encircling the exterior just below the rim, and the remaining exterior is natural buff terracotta. An endearing feature of this bowl is an indentation which exactly fits a fingertip(visible in the photograph) on the otherwise perfectly formed raised bottom. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE. Fortunately excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics. Formed without a potting wheel, elevate objects intended for daily use into highly sophisticated artistic achievements. Dimensions: 5” diameter at the rim. 2” diameter at the base, 2” high. Condition: Some pockmarks in the interior. A very minor chip in the grating surface and a few minor chips in the rim. Otherwise in very good condition. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt. A career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. This print/poster shows a scene in a small town or"Anytown, USA" as the volunteer fire department rushes to answer a 3:37 pm alarm with their B-Model Mack semi-open cab fire truck. Note the bulldog just to the right of the truck's left front wheel while a local police officer stops traffic on Main St. This poster is approximately 12.5 x 24" with a white 1" border and is printed on 46 lb high quality paper, laminated with a matte finish, mounted on a foamcore backing and finally shrink-wrapped for extra protection. All of the cultures encompassed under the WMST nomenclature were in the habit of burying their dead in socially-stratified burial chambers at the base of deep shafts. Which were in turn often topped by buildings. Originally believed to be influenced by the Tarascan people, who were contemporaries of the Aztecs, thermoluminescence has pushed back the dates of ... morethese groups over 1000 years. Although the apogee of this tradition was reached in the last centuries of the 1st millennium BC, it has its origins over 1000 years earlier at sites such as Huitzilapa and Teuchitlan, in the Jalisco region. Little is known of the cultures themselves, although preliminary data seems to suggest that they were sedentary agriculturists with social systems not dissimilar to chiefdoms.
