This ceremonial metate carved from volcanic stone represents one of the most unusual traditions of the ancient Americas. It features the head of a jaguar at one end, with the metate itself making up the body of the animal. The rectangular surface is framed with an incised scalloped motif. Geometric reliefs adorn its tripod legs. Most impressive is the attention to the jaguar head. We see both naturalism in the physiognomic contouring of the head and at the same time abstract linear markings to denote whiskers and coat. What's more, the artist successfully captured the ferocity of the beast with a snarling grimace of threatening teeth. Some metates were used as grinding slabs, while others showing more ... moreintricate designs were intended for ritualistic ceremonies and as burial offerings. It has also been suggested that some metates were actually used as thrones for rulers to sit on. The decorative program of this metate suggests a ceremonial function. This is a stone figurine from Mezcala Guerrero. It was collected in the 1950's or 60's by Mr. Ed Young of Albuquerque. NM who is now deceased. His label on masking tape is still in place on the rear of the figurine. This example shows the type with spaces cut between arms and body as seen in Carlo Gay's study of Mezcala figurines, type M14 in his types, the treatment of eyes more resembles type M16. A scarce finely modelled Pre-columbian Olmec(Mexico) pottery head of a baby. Its face painted with creamy slip and red pigment on the coiffure. It has the elongated upper half of the cranium with flattened forehead which was a artificial deformation of the skull done during early infancy as a marker of high social status. Costa Rican Solid Jade Axe - Dark Green
Solid jade axe from Costa Rica weights 7 ounces and measures 5 inches wide. 2-1/2 inches at the wide edge and 1 inch at the narrow edge. The jade is dark green in color. Axe was excavated from"Pacuare" on Linea Vieja in the Guapiles area of Costa Rica and was a gift from Jose Francisco Moya Gomez of the La Lola Cacao Farm near Siquirres, Limon Province of Costa Rica to Allen Young of the Milwaukee Public Museum on March 13, 1984. Paperwork provided to Mr. Young from Mr. Gomez is included along with a lovely crocheted cloth that the axe was wrapped in. Beautiful piece of jade!

From western Mexico. A statue head of the Jalisco culture, in the Ameca-Ezatlan style, ca. 300 BC- 300 AD. The head, of orange-ware terracotta is somewhat fragmentary, having lost the top of the head and the right earring. Burial debris is adhered to most of the crevices from approximately 2000 years below ground. The features are modeled rather nicely, a smooth surface on the face, and a large prominent nose. 3" 7.6cm) tall, 2-1/2" 6.4cm) wide, and 1-3/4" 4.5cm) front to back. Large Precolumbian Chupícuaro Decorated Bowl
In the Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures. C acao was a precious commodity. Associated with persons holding high rank in the social hierarchy, so items decorated with cacao beans offer hints about their original owners. This immaculate pottery bowl is from the Chupícuaro culture from the area of Guanajuato. Mexico, with an estimated age of 300 BCE- 300 CE. It has a very interesting decorative pattern of two bands of freehand wavy lines, above and below what appear to be red cacao bean pods(see photo) around the exterior. Similar wavy lines and representations of cacao pods also adorn the interior. All on light buff earthenware, and the circumference of the lightly turned, flared rim is also decorated with what appear to be cacao beans, removed from their encasing pods. The bowl rests on a flattened bottom so that it displays beautifully! ... moreThe ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE. During the same time Teotihuacán flourished. Fortunately excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today, because in 1949 the Solís Dam construction. led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake. Chupícuaro ceramics, formed without a potting wheel, elevate objects intended for daily use into highly sophisticated artistic achievements. Dimensions: 9 1/8" across and 4 1/4" high. Condition– This bowl is in choice condition with zero chips. Cracks or fractures. The cacao beans suggest high status of the owner, so its placement in a well-made shaft tomb may account for its very fine condition. The interior bears normal mineral deposits for such an ancient item, somewhat heavier than on the exterior surface. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Lama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central Peru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. The artisan who produced this piece would have been under the control of the local kuraka(clan leader) Who regulated the production activities of the various specialists, farmers and festive activities within his community. With red painted vertical and horizontal lines and designs. Obviously the paint is lighter on one side where it probably was nearer to a damp wall which affected it. The rim appears to have been all red but that has lightened significantly. The"handles" appear to be heads with a mouth and the eyes are holes where cords were placed so it could be suspended. There are a couple of chips along the rim. Due to size it may have been for some small quantity substance of value; a painted piece usually means it was used ceremonially. A Pre-Columbian Ceramic Fragment of a Face mounted on a Sterling Silver Base. Approximately 1 5/8" in length and 1 1/4" wide at widest point. The figure is that of an Aztec or Mayan man and is firmly attached to its base. The base is stamped 925 for sterling silver and is set up to allow the piece to be worn either as a pin or as a pendant on a necklace. Weight of the piece is about 0.7 oz.
