This impressive toast rack is in the shape of a Viking ship or Venetian gondola and is quite a large size. Measuring 17.5 cm(just under 7 inches) high by 24 cm(9 ½ inches) in length. The piece is in good all round condition for its age with only a very small amount of wear to the silver plating but. As you can see from the photographs, one of the toast dividers has become detached on one side. Also, the two lower front struts are also detached but these are still in position and you need to pick the rack up and scrutinise it closely in order to see this. This does not affect the integral strength of the item. I realise this must sound quite dramatic but it is a rare piece and displays well whilst still fully functional. Hans Myhrer, in this piece, employed his skills in silver making and the use of Guilloche enamelling, to recreate the Viking story through this scene. This is an excellent example of the Viking Revival. I believe it dates from between 1910 to 1920. Scandinavian jewellery is always of the highest quality. The use of silver and enamel was popular across Europe in the early 20th century, due to the significant influence of the Arts& Crafts movement. The Art Deco era was also emerging.
