Japanese Haniwa Clay Figure This auction is for an antique Haniwa from Japan. It is made of clay and mounted to a fabric covered board. It was a presentation gift to an American military officer by a small group of Japanese military and civilians. There is info on the reverse of the piece as to the people involved in the presentation as well as some history of the Haniwa(please see pics) Apparently. These came into use during the 5th Century A.D. as substitutes for burying mourners with the deceased. They were often in the likeness of warriors guarding their Lord's burial mound. There is a symbol/character(maker's mark, date, impressed into the clay near the base(see pics) The overall size of the plaque is 12 x 15 inches. And someone attached wall hangers to all but one making them adorable little pictures for that little area on the wall that just needs a little something. Or. Remove the hangers and used them for the original purpose which was coasters. On one of the coasters there is a very small chip just above the dancing girl which could be easily touched up(Please see pictures) Idid not find other flaws. No chips, no cracks.

For your consideration is this fantastic set of three terracotta figures from China. The warrior on the left is 14 3/4" tall and about 5" wide. The warrior to the right of the horse is 14 3/16ths" and is 4 3/4" wide. The horse is 13 3/16ths' tall and about 14 3/4" long. The warrior on the right has it's right thumb missing. Other wise this set is in beautiful condition and comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Xian Branch of the China National Arts and Crafts Corporation proclaiming limited production in 1982. The actual terracotta figures that this soldier is based on, dating from 210 BC were discovered in 1974 by local farmers from Xi'an. Shan-xi province, China near the masoleum of the First Qin emperor. Currently estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were over 8.000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses. Rare Ancient Roman terracotta pidgeon possible part of a nice oil lamp?
Roman terracotta pidgeon Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the first excavations of a Roman ... moreship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. This pottery is identified as a Nupe vessel. The Igbo people have also produced similar vessels. This crafted clay vessel was served as a container for water or other beverage. It comes with its base made out of leaves. Number about 350.000 the Nupe have along standing reputation as makers of fine pottery and ceramic objects. Since they are mostly Muslim, their vessels almost always feature lovely incised decoration, without human images. Exceptionally, this one has an abstract or schematic human face.This could be seen as an influence from the Nupe neighbors or other groups from Nigeria such as the Tiv and the Ga'anda living in the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. The Tiv are a large group of more than one million people living in North-east Nigeria. They are famous for their wooden carvings as well as for their brass figures and their ceramics. Ritual vessels in the form of a head and these with a large open mouth were found in the Ga'anda territory, too. Red Dragon Ware Tobacco Jar Humidor Redware Moriage Enamel Japanese? Terracotta
Vintage Dragonware Tobacco Jar Very dirty in most of the tight spots. There are some condition and quality issues. Estate find. Measures approximately 6-1/4” tall and 5-1/4” wide. Weighs 1 pound 10 ounces. I think this is a humidor or tobacco jar. It has the shape and appearance of being one. And the inside of the lid has a hole that I believe is where a sponge is supposed to go. The item is unmarked. I definitely don't know the maker. And my best guess of origin is Japan, but I could be wrong. It is clearly vintage, but I'm not sure exactly how old. Though this material looks like terracotta. I have no idea if it actually is or not. I'm not even sure if this decoration is well described as moriage or not. You all know so much more about this item than I do. I apologize greatly for my ignorance. There are no chips and no cracks ... moreto the actual red material. A blue decoration on the very top of the lid has an approximate 3/16” chip or rough spot. And a green decoration on the top has a 1.5mm pop or crater of sort. You will find a small amount more of these pops and related blemishes to the rest of the decoration. All of the applied decoration has discolored crazing. Three of the lower green beads on the lid are chipped with a few more having bites. There is a chipped green bead to the lower edge of the bottom. And one of the pinkish strands on the bottom piece has a bite to the tip. The red material has quite an evident amount of seemingly permanent darkening throughout. This darkening looks the most blackish to the underside of the bottom piece. All of the tight spots are incredibly dirty. This is much more of an issue to the lid than the bottom piece. The tight spots of the lid are absolutely filthy. Lots of dirt and crud. It’s the sort of dirtiness that I am quite confident will be difficult to clean. You may have to learn to love this item exactly as it is now. The top edge of the bottom piece is worn and dulled from the lid rubbing around. And there are a couple super tiny edge bites. The lid does r

The Lamp is sculptured in Terracotta clay representing embraced Putti boy and girl holding a nest with eggs and sits on a hand carved gilded wooden base. The two Putti are very sweet and realistic- the girl has a flower wreath in her hair. This sculpture has incredible fine detail and is much probably unique. Such terracotta sculptures are entirely hand modeled and are sometimes used as prototypes for casting bronze copies. A kind of living memory of the Artist are his fingerprints all over the sculpture. This is a very rare piece of art and rarely you will see something of such quality offered on Ebay! A LOW starting price! Italy in 1886- He was active in Paris in the first three decades of 20th Century, specialised in portrait busts and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1911-1928. An Italian by birth, he settled in Paris where he studied under Laporte-Blairsy, gaining a honorable mention in 1921. He is distinguished by the production of graceful and elegant sculptures in the style of Louis XV. Then he moved to Torbole, on the Lake Garda. Cian created several bust portraits of Beethoven, one of them is in the garden of the Beethovenhauses in Bonn. His busts of Goethe and Dante(c.1954) are in Torbole by Lake Garda. Terracotta Serpent Gargoyle Head from Times Square Building
Authentic terracotta architectural element shaped as serpent. Dragon, gargoyle or victorian dolphin. This was removed from the Candler building in NYC during a restoration project. The terracotta on the high floors had become unstable from years of exposure to the elements. The building is still standing and some of the elements on the back side are still present. You can read about the intersting history of the building on the Internet. The Candler building can be seen in the original Superman movie. Superman flies around the building and these heads can been seen if you know where to look. The original design on the building featured two heads back to back. Photo number 8 is the best we could get from the ground. The design did repeat but there were several variants of the heads. This one has an extended tongue and visible teeth. This is ... morebig. 36" wide at longest point. 9" max depth. Use the soda can in the photo for scale. Has not been weighed yet. This has not been cut. There is a shaped joint at the neck where the maker's marks are stamped. The original steel tie is attached. Please look at the photos carefully to see the condition. There are chips on the nose and eyebrow and a chunk missing at the brow. There is a nice patina from pollution staining. There are stress cracks in the peice. Presumably from freezing and thawing, but it is stable. We removed about 50 pounds of concrete(not the typical motar) from the back. Trapped water likely froze and caused all the problems. Beautiful reproductions of the famous Xi'an. China Terra Cotta Warriors in original box. This set features four warriors(three standing, one kneeling) and a horse. All are crafted like the original warriors discovered near the Chinese city of Xi'an. The warriors are 6" tall(kneeling warrior is 5" high) and the horse is approximately 4" tall. The box has a silk patterned padded cover and two small pegs(ivory-colored) to secure it closed. The inside is a red felt/flannel type fabric(there are some dark spots on this. Please see photos) and has a description of the warriors in Chinese on the inside lid. African Art Terracotta Figurine Statue Young Woman Hand Made Unique?
For sale is a really nice terracotta figurine of a young African woman. The detail on this figurine really has to be seen to be believed I have tried to capture it in the photographs but these do not do it justice. She has a very well detailed face and a basket of fruit on her hip. She is finished in different types of glaze. The fruit is in a matt glaze but her costume is in a high-gloss glaze as is her head scarf. The figurine is obviously hand made and could well be a one off piece of art. Unique in its own right. She stands 19 cm tall and is in super condition throughout with no damage chips or cracks. She is a beautiful item that displays well and will fit in to any setting or African art collection. Antique TERRACOTTA BUST Victorian Woman MANDOLIN Sculpture ART Italian FRENCH
Antique Terracotta Victorian Bust! Here we have a Fabulous Antique Terracotta Bust of a Victorian Lady playing a Mandolin. She measures approximately 17" high by 12" wide-elbow to elbow. She came from the estate of an elderly woman who traveled extensively. And collected only the finest Antiques while in Europe. I was told by the family she was from Italy and purchased in France. or maybe it was the other way around? She is from the Victorian Era which would make her over 100 years old! She has the most peaceful look on her realistic face as she strums(what I can only assume it a love ballad) on her Mandolin. Beautifully done from her Lace Collar and Cuffs to her Flowered Dress. She is wearing a mosaic pendant around her neck and has a pretty hair band around the curls that fall from the top of her head. I have brushed her with ... morea soft paintbrush to get the dust off and lightly wiped her down. I see in the photos there is more dust close to her collar. And mostly in the crevasses of her hands, around her facial features etc. but I did not want to do a real cleaning as I am not an expert in Terracotta, so I will leave this up to the lucky winner. So please excuse the lack of cleaning and the camera glare. She has some loss of the"velvet" on her pendant around her neck and it looks like part of the Mandolin neck has been glued. I actually didn't notice this for a while, as when she is placed on the table it is not all that noticeable. Certainly does not detract from the detailed beauty of this piece. Some little nicks here and there as is typical of terracotta from this era. She has felt around the base and the numbers 477 29 on the back. She is very heavy! A lovely Art Piece that doesn't come along very often. Perfect for your Eclectic, Victorian or Curated Home! I have a very low reserve which does not reflect the value of this piece.
