NATIVE AMERICAN GROOVED STONE AXE/HAMMER HEAD. Greenish-Grey mottled stone.maybe a granite? Lash groove is slightly off center with the axe'blade' being longer than the rounded hammer end. There are a few chips in the'blade' tip. With a slightly concave'strike' area from hammering on the reverse. Rounded butt end has'strike' marks as well. There are 5 distinct circular pits. And several semi-pits in this item. I have no idea what would have made the circular marks. The best guesstimate I have is based on the research references cited below. This implement is similar to ones discovered throughout the Southwest. Primarily among the Cliff Dwellers. Southwest Colorado. Authentic Native American Grooved Stone Axe Head Artifact from Conowingo Md.
This was found in 1916 by my Great Grandfather on an outing to the Susquehanna river at Conowingo Md just above where the original town of Conowingo once was. My Great Grandfather was in the company of his friend Martin Kurtz who was there that day to document the petroglyphs at Bald Friar Rock near the falls located close to the original town of Conowingo. I'm sure if you google Mr Kurtz you will find information on his expeditions. I assume this axe was found close by the falls. A well known Susquehannock Indian encampment area. It looks to be granite however I am not an expert by any means so just a guess. There is a good sized chunk missing from the bottom of the stone. The other stone I have no idea exactly what it was used for but my thumb fits perfectly into the groove. I also have no idea where this smaller stone came from.It's ... morevery smooth and kind of a reddish color so probably not from the same area as the axe. These two stones have been together for as long as any of us can recall so will remain that way. The axe measures about 7" long X about 3 1/2" The smaller stone measures about 3" long X about 1 1/2" wide at the widest point. Statue is overall brown in color with bands of white calcinations.It has a toothy long necked horse at the handle end and a Ch'ih head covering the backside portion.Much of the surface has fine abrasion scratches and fine splits suggesting wear from being in the ground.Much of the original polish has been decreased as a result.There is a rock wedged in the Ch'ihs mouth.It may be much older than my estimate of age.It measures 9" at greatest height. 5 1/2" at greatest width, and is 1 1/4" in depth.It weighs 984 gr or 2 lbs 2.7 oz.
