An ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664- 323 BC. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite ... morewig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, seed basket and back pillar behind, with a frontal column of hieroglyphics. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" Was a funerary figure, placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all Ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labour in the afterlife, if summoned. So it became common practice among the highly religious and superstitious elite to place small figures(sometimes as many as 300) in their burial chambers, that could be substituted for themselves if need be. Thus manual work could be avoided, the shabtis"coming to life" if called and performing the work themselves. This belief may appear strange to our modern ideas of religion and the world but in Ancient Egypt art and religion were inextricably linked. To the extent that figures such as the present example could be imbued with life, given the right circumstances. It was deemed that a"spell" should be written on the shabti so that it should awaken as planned- this is the so-called shabti spell from chapter six of the Book of the Dead and reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis. Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again, then'Here am I! you shall say" A fascinating piece of ancient Egyptian faience sculpture. Height: 4 1/4 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Museum Gallery. Ancient Egyptian Late Period Faience Shabti / Ushabti Statue Figure - 664 BC
A well provenanced ancient Egyptian faience shabti. Dating to the Late Period, 664- 323 BC. Modelled in dazzling blue faience. The figure is shown mummiform, with back pillar, wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. The ancient Egyptians believed that the eternal soul of the deceased resided in a paradise known as the'Field of Reeds' With its calm waters and lush vegetation. This fertile environment was similar to their own earthly world at the banks of the river Nile. Unfortunately however, the dead were also expected to undertake agricultural labour on behalf of the gods; ploughing, sowing, and reaping the crops. For those who wished to avoid this physical strain, shabti figures were placed in their burial chambers as alternative workers, imbued with a powerful magic so ... morethat they would rise and take the deceased’s place working in the fields. Dating to Egypt's Late Period, approximately 664-323 B.C. Of good style. The figure is shown wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris, holding the hoe and pick, ... moreseed basket and back pillar behind. The shabti(ancient Egyptian"shawabti" was a funerary figure. Placed in the tombs of wealthy individuals that, on account of its human appearance and hieroglyphic text identifying it, would fool the gods into thinking that the shabti was the deceased! This was important as all ancient Egyptians might be required to perform menial manual labor in the afterlife, if summoned. It was deemed that a"spell" should be written on the shabtis so that it should awaken as planned- this is the so-called shabti spell from chapter six of the Book of the Dead and reads as

Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom 20th Dynasty Faience Shabti / Ushabti - 1187 BC
An ancient Egyptian New Kingdom faience shabti. Dating to the 20th Dynasty, 1187 to 1064 BC. Modelled in shimmering blue faience. The figure is shown mummiform, wearing the tripartite wig, beard of Osiris and holding agricultural implements; the hoe and pick. For those who wished to avoid this physical strain, shabti figures were placed in their burial chambers as alternative workers, imbued with a powerful magic so that they would ... morerise and take the deceased’s place working in the fields. A spell was often written on the shabti so that it would awaken(remnants of which are preserved on the legs of this example) Known as the'shabti spell' from Chapter Six of the Book of the Dead, it reads as follows: O shawabti. If[name of deceased] is called upon, If he is appointed to do any work which is done on the necropolis, Even as the man is bounden. Namely to cultivate the fields, To flood the river-banks or to carry the sand of the East to the West, And back again. Then'Here am I! you shall say. Height: 3 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Antique / Ancient Egyptian Faïence Ushabti Shabti Late Period Statue
Ancient Egyptian Ushabti You are bidding on what I believe to be an ancient Egyptian Ushabti but since I can not be sure and have no provenance. The auction will start at a penny. When I acquired it from an eBay seller(whom I forgot) some time ago. I was certain it was 100% authentic- the hieroglyphs don't appear to be the jibberish you would expect to see in a reproduction, in fact it looks similar to some book of the dead passages I have seen. The glaze looks to be accurate but I really do not like the air bubble above the text register and a tiny one on his head. This statue certainly has the appearance of late period ushabti but could only date back to the mid twentieth century, possibly even to the grand tour(1840's) when tourists were sold these pieces as authentic. This ushabti has some VERY attractive features and nicely imprinted ... morehieroglyphs making it a great economical study model or display piece, it measures 3.7 inches(4.1 inches mounted on the custom base) and weighs 1.22 oz Shipping is a flat $8 via USPS

Authentic Ancient Egyptian Ramesside Period Shabti - ushabti
A Ramesside Period Shabti This New Kingdom shabti. Is from Egypt's Ramesside Period. Stylistically. We can tell it was likely made sometime between the reigns of Seti II, and Ramesses III. The figure is elaborately decorated. It has a full(if not cramped& difficult to read) inscription running down the length of the body, and going under it's feet! The text is framed on either side with parallel lines. Both decoration and text are a very rich black color, further enhanced on it's light blue turquoise ground. The shabti's eyes and brows are clearly expressed. A formal and elaborate tripartite wig adorns the head. Lappets hang down on the chest while framing the face. A wide collared necklace of distinction decorates the figure's neck. And chest. Indeed, the necklace's four rows of intricate beading are further highlighted ... morewith hanging lotus flower pendants. Wide bangle bracelets dress the shabti's forearms. All of these, emblems of high rank. Within each hand. A hoe is grasped by it's handle, while the implements themselves lie on opposing shoulders. Then, on the back, just below the the wig. We see additional workman implements! First. A narrow open ended, rectangular shaped mold for making mud bricks. This rests just below the wig. Then, under it, a shoulder plank balances two water jars. Between them a woven seed sack, filled with seeds for planting in the Elysian fields! So we see. This shabti is not only well dressed. It is very well equipped and ready for serious work. Ready for any task assigned to him in the coming days of the afterlife. A translation of the script: The Osiris. The Treasurer Nesi-Nakht-Rae-Mry, justified Height approximately 12.6 cm- just under 5 inches. It's condition is intact and unrepaired as seen in the photos. There is however a light glaze chip to mouth. Which can be easily restored professionally. The uneven color and light roughness to the shabti surface only attest to it's 3,000 year old age. Still, a fine specimen for this Period. Rame

Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom White Faience Shabti / Ushabti Of Mes-Hor - 1292 BC
A rare ancient Egyptian New Kingdom faience shabti for Mes-hor. Dating to the 19th/ 20th Dynasty, 1292 to 1064 BC. Modelled in bright white faience. The figure is shown mummiform, wearing the tripartite wig and holding dual agricultural implements. Shabtis modelled in white faience are far rarer than those composed of green or blue and were only produced during a relatively short period of the New Kingdom, the 19th- 20th Dynasties, also known as the Ramesside Period. The single vertical column of hieroglyphs identify the owner of this figure as Mes-Hor and read as follows: The illuminated one. The Osiris, Mes-hor. The ancient Egyptians believed that the eternal soul of the deceased resided in a paradise known as the'Field of Reeds' With its calm waters and lush vegetation. This fertile environment was similar to their own earthly ... moreworld at the banks of the river Nile. Unfortunately however, the dead were also expected to undertake agricultural labour on behalf of the gods; ploughing, sowing, and reaping the crops. For those who wished to avoid this physical strain, shabti figures were placed in their burial chambers as alternative workers, imbued with a powerful magic so that they would rise and take the deceased's place working in the fields. Height: 3 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Formerly part of a collection in northern Holland. Acquired between 1950– 1990 and subesquently with Dick Meijer.
