The"bezel" or face of the ring has a“sculpted” starburst design which is composed of two rings of raised dots surrounding the center“star” This is a very elaborate rendition of a very popular theme. Though the starburst design was very common and seemingly very popular, this ornate depiction of a starburst while not unique, is certainly very exceptional. The bands of the ring are not understated or drab either! As you can see the bands are engraved/stamped with a very intricate design created five raised parallel, again composed of raised dots. Raised dots was the technique most often employed to emboss. Stamp, or engrave small items of jewelry such as this. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship, and is entirely intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The wear evidenced is not excessive…but some of the raised dots which comprise the“starburst” are worn a little flat, and there are some very, very slight indications of wear on the bands as well. From my personal collection. A one of a kind British custom made smallest chain mail ring Roman legionair lorica hamata ever made in modern times with a very tiny 3mm inner diameter ring. It is edged with sheep skin but to take it up a notch. The entire under coating is lined under the shoulder doubling and sewn in as well with sheep skin. This was hand made as a one of kind item. No modern mail maker comes close to making rings this small(or scale) in size and then making a complete lorica hamata with complete sheep skin edging and lining to boot. Only the ancient Romans with a few finds in Europe show a Roman lorica hamata with rings this small. The inner 3mm rings are so tight and small, it actually looks like fabric and not real metal rings when you wear it. As you can see. ... moreThe design is simple, but elegant, with a kind of multi-level terraced bezel which calls to mind images of terraced agricultural fields. The"bezel" or center part of this ring is an elegantly shaped raised“platform” sculpted center which vaguely resembles a crown in shape. This raised center platform steps down to a lower terrace both flanking both right and left, and then there are two more raised ribs or bumps which create the illusions of two additional lower terraces, a very sophisticated construction which really gives a strong impression four distinct terraces or layers. It is only upon close inspection you realize that there are only two terraces or levels, and that the illusion of a lower third and fourth layer is created by the raised ridges flanking the first two higher terraces. The result is a ring which is very modern and distinctive in appearance– classical and timeless in design. The ring has a very nice patina. A medium tone quite characteristic of ancient bronze.
