Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Deep Blue Glass Inlay 300-400 AD Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds ... moreand sapphires found their way from the silk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. This beautiful ancient Roman bronze ring is a very interesting piece. Covered in a dark, natural patina all over with light earthen sediments that have settled in areas. Its band is thick and smooth while its large cup-type bezel holds within itself the most alluring deep blue glass inlay. The glass inlay was made by pouring blue molten glass into the bezel and its shape is formed when cooled. This bezel still bears its four strong clasps and the ring has remained fully intact and of excellent condition. By 300 AD. Inlays in Roman jewellery had become more important than their settings, and this reflected the general Roman taste in jewellery styles. Egyptian mummy portraits from the Roman period illustrate the sorts of rich jewellery combinations with which well-to-do ladies bedecked themselves. Because of its remarkable adaptability and potential to imitate more precious materials, glass offered a uniquely affordable alternative to the expensive items favoured by the aristocracy without losing any of the visual appeal for which such materials were favoured. Such carved portraits could portray a beloved family member or even the important figures of an era such as portraits of rulers or important dignitaries; portrait rings were often gifts from royalty to their subjects. ROMAN SILVER Mithras/Christan ring 375 AD ~SHADOWS OF PARADISE~ Hi Folks, This Auction is for a VERY UNUSUAL RING. THE LAST OWNER(AROUND 360/ 400 AD) Was hedging his bet's.The Bull, symbolize's Mathras& The Cross for Christ, you can never have to much protection! Size.11 3/4, this is a work of art and the only cross-over-Bull-ring I have ever seen. now.about its history. In every Mithraeum the centrepiece was a representation of Mithras killing a sacred bull. Called the tauroctony.31] The image may be a relief. Or free-standing, and side details may be present or omitted. The centre-piece is Mithras clothed in Anatolian costume and wearing a Phrygian cap; who is kneeling on the exhausted[32] bull, holding it by the nostrils[32] with his left hand, and stabbing it with his right. As he does so, he looks over his shoulder towards ... morethe figure of Sol. A dog and a snake reach up towards the blood. A scorpion seizes the bull's genitals. A raven is flying around or is sitting on the bull. Three corns of wheat are seen coming out from the bull's tail, sometimes from the wound. The bull was often white. The god is sitting on the bull in an unnatural way with his right leg constraining the bull's hoof and the left leg is bent and resting on the bull's back or flank.33] The two torch-bearers are on either side, dressed like Mithras, Cautes with his torch pointing up and Cautopates with his torch pointing down.34]35] Sometimes Cautes and Cautopates carry shepherds' crooks instead of torches.36] Tauroctony from the Kunsthistorisches Museum The event takes place in a cavern. Into which Mithras has carried the bull, after having hunted it, ridden it and overwhelmed its strength.37] Sometimes the cavern is surrounded by a circle, on which the twelve signs of the zodiac appear. Outside the cavern, top left, is Sol the sun, with his flaming crown, often driving a quadriga. A ray of light often reaches down to touch Mithras. Top right is Luna, with her crescent moon, who may be depicted driving

The Romans greatly favoured the use of stone and glass in their jewellery. And expanded the Hellenistic tradition by focusing on the visual effects multi-coloured bits of stone and glass could achieve in their own right. The Romans used glass extensively to imitate precious stones such as emerald, sardonyx, and amethyst, since glass was much easier to carve. **ANCIENT ROMAN 14KT GOLD GIMMEL FEDE RING from THE MUSEO GREGORIANO-ETRUSCO**
The Museo Gregoriano-Etrusco. Part of the Vatican Museum, was founded by Pope Gregory XVI in 1837, and contains objects that, starting from 1828, were found in the excavations of the ancient cities of southern Etruria(today known as northern Latium) then part of the Pontifical State. With the end of the Pontifical State in 1870, the territorial authority of the museum came to an end and is no longer enlarged by excavation materials, rather only by the occasional acquisition of archaeological collections- all of old formation and extraordinary importance. The museum contains material from between the 9th and the 1st century BC. From the iron age until the progressive and definitive converging of the Etruscan cities into the structure of the Roman state. The millenary history of the Etruscan people is narrated here by ceramics, bronzes, silver ... moreand gold which document a flourishing craft structure and a special artistic civilization. In the VII and VIII rooms of the museum are displayed the gold objects for dress and body decoration made with great technical and creative ability by the Etruscan goldsmiths during the ten centuries of their civilization. A sure taste in the choice of models and precious and semi-precious stones was accompanied by a growing craft skill that made Etruscan jewellery unique and unrepeatable in the ancient world. The most common techniques used were: casting. Beating into sheets, creation of threads for the twisting of minute golden strips, finishing with punches or chisel and granulation. This is a special technique, that permitted making balls so tiny as to reach infinitesimal dimensions(dust) that adhered to the sheet of the piece of jewellery with microwelding, creating continuous surfaces or designs. The mission of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is to collect. Preserve, study, exhibit, and stimulate appreciation for, and advance knowledge of, works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement at the highest level of quality- all in the service of

In antiquity. Lions were common along the southern coast of the Mediterranean, as well as in Greece and the Middle East. When Romans entered Egypt, they were impressed and fascinated by the civilization, life, and history of Ancient Egyptians that were demonstrated in the temples and monuments. Obviously, one of the attractions in Egypt that the Romans were fascinated with was the presence of lions there. Romans used leopards, tigers, bears, giraffes, and of course lions in death matches against the gladiators. The excessive hunting of the Barbary lions by the Ro
Ancient Greco-Roman Carved “Infinity Symbol” Bronze Ring 100-200 AD
Ancient Greco-Roman Carved“Infinity Symbol” Bronze Ring 100-200 AD Apart from gold and other precious metals. But Nature flies from the infinite. For the infinite is unending or imperfect and Nature ever seeks an end. Aristotle, 384-322 BC This beautiful and symbolic ancient Greco-Roman ring is made of a solid bronze. Is perfectly smooth all around, bearing a lovely symmetrical form, making for a comfortable fit today. Its band bears an intentional cut in the middle of its base. This would have been done by its ancient patron as a common way of resizing their rings. The surface of its large, almond-shaped bezel is engraved deeply with the most well-preserved knot-like pattern which the ancient Greeks(and in turn the Romans) used to symbolize the ancient continuum hypothesis of“infinity” This ring has remained absolutely captivating from its decorative carvings as clear as the day it was made, to the rich historical symbolism it holds. It makes for a very comfortable fit, and is bound to spark the interest and curiosity of its admirers when worn today. In Ancient Greece. We find a society struggling to develop the ability to introduce and communicate ideas.

Ancient Roman ring hollow seal of the god Mars. Unique.
Ancient Roman ring hollow seal of the god Mars. Unique. Beautiful craftsmanship of ancient art. Dark green patina. Dimensions- 18.5 mm Weighs- 5.50 g Authenic ancient ring. Unique. In ancient Roman religion and myth. Mars( Latin: Mārs. Martis) was the god of war and also an agricultural guardian. A combination characteristic of early Rome. 1] He was second in importance only to Jupiter and Neptune and he was the most prominent of the military gods in the religion of the Roman army. Most of his festivals were held in March. The month named for him( Latin Martius) And in October, which began and ended the season for military campaigning and farming. Under the influence of Greek culture. Mars was identified with the Greek god Ares, 2] whose myths were reinterpreted in Roman literature and art under the name of Mars. But the character and dignity ... moreof Mars differed in fundamental ways from that of his Greek counterpart. Who is often treated with contempt and revulsion in Greek literature. 3] Mars was a part of the Archaic Triad along with Jupiter and Quirinus. The latter of whom as a guardian of the Roman people had no Greek equivalent. Mars' altar in the Campus Martius. The area of Rome that took its name from him, was supposed to have been dedicated by Numa. The peace-loving semi-legendary second king of Rome. Although the center of Mars' worship was originally located outside the sacred boundary of Rome( pomerium) Augustus made the god a renewed focus of Roman religion by establishing the Temple of Mars Ultor in his new forum. 4] Although Ares was viewed primarily as a destructive and destabilizing force. Mars represented military power as a way to secure peace. And was a father(pater) of the Roman people. 5] In the mythic genealogy and founding myths of Rome. Mars was the father of Romulus and Remus with Rhea Silvia. His love affair with Venus symbolically reconciled the two different traditions of Rome's founding; Venus was the divine mother of the hero Aeneas. Celebrated as the

Roman Bronze Intaglio Ring with Swastika Symbol
Roman Bronze Intaglio Ring with Swastika Symbol weight: 12 grams inside dia: 22 mm The history of the Roman world is an epic story which stretches out over the course of more than two millennia- the story of an small group of villages which went on to dominate a major part of the western world and was to substantially define its culture. It is obviously impossible to summarize the entire history within a few lines. However. Most chronologies distinguish between the following phases: Origins and Roman Monarchy(753- 509 B.C. A somewhat less familiar period, at the end of which Roman territory was only one small area, Latium, which remained threatened on all sides by Italic and Etruscan peoples. The Roman Republic(509- 27 B.C. paved the way for the institutions. Administration and organizational structures that were to sustain the force of Rome. ... moreBy 264 B.C. Rome controlled the entire Italian peninsula. Its ambition would then be to dominate the Mediterranean. Following the destruction of Carthage in 146, this was achieved for the western part. Macedonia, allied with Carthage, was then defeated, and Greece was“liberated” from the Macedonians in 194. Rome occupied what is today the Turkish coastline. Julius Caesar was at the origin of the change which, within a few years(49-29 B.C. would change the Roman institutions into an empire which covered almost the whole of the Mediterranean shores, plus Gaul and present day Spain. The Roman Empire(27 B.C. 476 A.D. increased the grasp of Rome on the Western world even more so. However signs of crisis increase from 250 A.D. onwards. With the rise of new peoples who threaten the borders of the Roman empire. Within the empire, Christianity progresses and the Emperor Constantine converts to it in 324. In 395, Theodosius shares the empire between his two sons. The Western Empire fell in 476, whereas the Byzantine Empire remained, with many trials and tribulations until 1453. However things are not that simple. The rise of Rome and the fall of the Empire cannot be

ROMAN SILVER RING W/OPIUM POPPYS 100BC/200AD
ROMAN SILVER RING W/OPIUM POPPYS 100BC/200AD Hi Folks, This is a Roman Silver ring with Opium Poppy's. It is a gem! This is one of the harder item's for me to let go of. It has been in my collection for a long, long time.it is a Opium Poppy ring, it is a size 9 and an extremely rare ring from the Ancient world in really great condition.Good luck& good bidding! Peace& blessings, Grover ~PATINA~*On the subject of patina. I have had several emails telling and asking me if taking the so-called"patina" off the piece lessens it's value. In my opinion it is not patina but dirt. Patina is found on bronze statues and forms because of their exposure to the air. Almost all of the items I sell and the items like mine on-line, have come out of the ground. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground ... moreby the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which is the case most of the time. The dirt has to be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze( jewelry or coins) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. I clean them and I put in the hours to do it( one ring can take as many as 5 hours to clean properly. because I feel that they should be seen as their last owners saw them bright and shiny( I leave the inner part of the ring as-is so the new owner can be the first person in the age of the ring to touch it once the"PATINA" wears-off. As far as lessening the value, most of these items are less than $100 and in the 11 years I have been selling these items on Eba there has been little change in the price. In the end it is up to you, the buyer, to decide for yourselves if you would rather have a clean or dirty ring. dhep.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4
