Roman bronze gladius pendant
Here is a Roman bronze gladius pendant. It is in wonderful condition. There is a nice ground patina which guarantees it to be an authentic Roman artifact. This artifact dates to around the 3rd Century A.D. It was found in the former Yugoslavia. This pendant with the hole at the top makes a lot more sense for it to be used as a pendant than those other supposed gladius pendants with the hole in the blade. I believe that those are actually something else. Please ask all questions before bidding. We do combine shipping on multiple wins. We ship as soon as payment is received. Thank you for looking at our auctions. Shipping on this item will be less than what ebay shows. It can be sent to you in a padded envelope for the postage.

It’s possible that there is some significance to the pattern, but it is more likely that it was simply a pleasing geometric design which was popular to the era and region. Dots, hash-marks, V” and“X” symbols were often used as design elements with no special significance, and their appearance is oftentimes entirely mundane and ordinary. Regardless, the ring is a

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 8 1/2(U.S. Diameter: 20 1/2mm* 20mm(outer dimensions) 19mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 20mm(height) 19mm(breadth) Fixed Width 3 1/2mm Band. Weight: 1.43 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Completely intact, moderately light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A substantial. Well constructed Roman bronze band with very masculine and handsome features. The construction is that of a simple band clearly cut from flat bronze stock, it has the look of hammered bronze. Obviously as you can see it is a little more than ... morea simple band, as it does incorporate a large oval bezel, all part of the same piece of bronze. It also features overlapping bands at the back, which at the time it was created would have formed an“adjustable” ring. However ancient metal tends to crystallize and become inflexible, and though the ring was“adjustable” when it was originally created, fifteen or sixteen centuries later the ring size is pretty much fixed, there’s little“flex” left in the bronze bands. Very simple. Rather uncommon to the time, the ring remains in very good condition. Rather than the more archaic style of producing band and bezel separately and then attaching them together, this ring is constructed of a single piece of bronze, albeit cut from flat, hammered bronze sheet rather than molded from molten bronze. In a way, this accentuates the ring’s timeless design and modern flavor. There are clear indications that the ring was worn during an ancient lifetime long past. However this should not be a source for disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the

Diameter: 19 1/2mm*18mm(outer diameter) 18mm*17mm(inner diameter) Weight: 1.15 grams. CONDITION: Superb! Completely intact. Very light wear consistent with occasional use. Very little porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An exceptionally well preserved bronze intaglio ring circa 1st century A.D. bearing remarkable workmanship and demonstrating the technique of reverse intaglio carving. There are several photo enlargements of the intaglio bezel below. And you can see the technique ... moreused in this remarkable and ancient art form. An intaglio ring was used to press the wearer's"seal" into lead, clay, or wax, leaving an impression created by the ring's bezel. Though oftentimes the carved intaglio seal might be in the form of a gemstone such as carnelian, carved and then mounted onto a ring; frequently the intaglio seal was created by simply carving into a metal bezel– such as is the case here. Rather than in relief, the image was created recessed, and everything had to be carved in mirror image so that when a piece of clay or wax was impressed with the seal, the image would be“right side out” The recessed engraving here seems to be that of one of the sailing vessels(a cargo galley) which Rome used to transport grain from Alexandria to Rome. And other commodities throughout the Mediterranean. Close examination of the metal work(see below) reveals a remarkable illustration of the technique. One of the images directly below is a very large blow-up of the bezel– which can be viewed for detail. As you can see, several holes are drilled into the material(whether it be gemstone or metal) to provide a starting point for the engravers
AD300 Ancient Roman Provincial Pannonia (Hungary) Faux Gemstone Bronze Ring Sz6
Handsome. Elegant Size 6 Genuine Ancient Roman Bronze Ring 300 A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Bronze Ring. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Provincial Pannonia– present-day Hungary) Third or Fourth Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 6(U.S. Diameter: 21mm* 18 1/2mm(outer diameter) 17 1/2mm* 17mm(inner diameter) Bezel: 9mm breadth* 8mm height* 3 1/2mm thickness. Fixed Width 2mm Band. Weight: 1.87 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Completely intact, moderately light wear, light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) misshapen bands. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A handsome. Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with understated but very elegant features. The ring sports a round, gumdrop” bezel which was probably intended to give the impression of a gemstone; or at least to suggest a gemstone. Of course ... moreno-one would have mistaken it for a gemstone ring, but this type of“faux gemstone” style ring was very popular in ancient Rome, even into Middle Ages Byzantium. The construction is of the more archaic style, characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This as opposed to the more modern style of construction prevalent in the following centuries whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(fashioned from a single piece of metal) The ring evidences light wear. Nothing particularly heavy, however the bands were mangled a bit due to the soil pressure exerted on the ring during the thousand years it was buried. If desired, the ring could be heated and the bands“tweaked” however generally it is better just to leave well enough alone. Though the bands are slightly misshapen, the ring“wears” quite nicely. The fact that the ring evidences some degree of wear from ancient usage should not, however, be a source of disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that

For a more authentic touch, we also have available handcrafted Greek black leather cords. CONDITION: Very good! Completely intact. Moderately light wear, moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An exceptionally well crafted and intact ancient Roman bronze ring circa 350-400 A.D. The construction is of the more archaic style. Characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This was in contrast to the more“modern” style of construction prevalent in the following centuries whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(fashioned from a single piece of metal) The most outstanding feature to this ring is found in the engraved/punched bezel. Motif od which is laden with symbolism. Note that there are ten punched/engraved concentric circles, or“eyes” The symbolism of such“eyes” found on items of personal adornment arose in very ancient times…much more ancient than the Romans or even their predecessors the Classical Greeks, the Persians, and eve
AD200 Roman Province Britannia England Legionary "Chicken" Eagle Bronze Ring Sz9
Genuine Ancient Engraved Legionary Eagle Intaglio Ring Third Century A.D. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with an Engraved“Legionary Eagle” Oval Intaglio-Style Bezel. ATTRIBUTION: Western Roman Empire(Britannia) Late Second or Third Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Fits ring size 9(U.S. Diameter: 22 1/2mm* 22mm(outer dimensions) 19 1/2mm* 18 1/2(inner diameter) Bezel: 18 1/2mm(length) 9 1/2mm(height) 3 ½(thickness) Tapered Width Band: 9mm(at bezel) 5mm(at sides) 3mm(at back) Weight: 7.28 grams. CONDITION: Very Good! Complete. Moderate wear consistent with ancient usage. Moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A bronze ring circa late second or third century A.D. Intact albeit moderately worn and with very light pebbling(porosity) to the surfaces of ... morethe metal. As you can see, the ring is very basic in design, though very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring is engraved with a Roman Legionary Eagle, wings folded, side profile, head to the right, the quintessential symbol of the Roman Legionary Army. However this is not what you might call a“classical depiction” of a Roman Legionary Eagle, which is usually head on or a three-quarters angle, with wings partly opened. This depiction is not even very fearsome, intimidating, or awe-inspiring at all. It seems a rather amateurish depiction, a simplification with little detail(not much more than an outline) perhaps done by someone not very familiar with what a Roman Legionary eagle was supposed to look like, as it looks rather more like a chicken than an eagle. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even if the depiction does not strike fear into the heart of the beholder(but rather amusement) it is still a wonderful depiction, even if quite atypical. As you can see. The periphery of the bezel was engraved with a boundary accent line, suggesting that perhaps the ring might have been used as a sea

Is in excellent condition and is completely intact. Evidences moderate wear consistent with very sustained, regular(ancient) usage. Evidences relatively light oxidation(corrosion or fine surface pitting frequently caused by contact with caustic soil while buried) Was professionally restored and conserved. Eastern Roman Empire(Syria) 4th Century A.D. Fits ring size 8 1/2(U.S. Bezel: 6mm(diameter at head) 15mm(breadth at base) 7mm(width at base) 5mm(thickness or height) Tapered Width Band: 5mm(at bezel) ... more4mm(at sides) 3mm(at back) Diameter: 26mm* 23mm(outer diameter) 19 ½* 19mm(inner diameter) Weight: 5.03 grams. Here's an well preserved Roman bronze ring circa fifth century A.D. Rather than the ring archaic style of construction. Where the bezel is crafted separately from the band, and then attached; this is the more advanced Roman design which incorporated the bezel and bands into one piece, much like a contemporary ring. This gives the ring a very classical, almost timeless character. You can see that the ring possesses a“sculpted” design. The bezel or center portion of the ring is an elevated oval shaped pyramid. The bezel is flanked top and bottom with quite distinct arrow shaped accents which point, when worn, to the bezel and away from the finger(perpendicular to the band) Flanking the other two sides of the bezel, positioned further down along the band, are two more, albeit longer, arrow shaped accents parallel to the band. However handsome the sculpted features of the ring. They also had a profane and practical side. The center of the bezel and the two flanking flanges all protrude several millimeters outward. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Outside Diameter: 75 x 71 millimeters. Inside Diameter: 68 x 63 millimeters. Band Thickness: 8 millimeters at top; 2 millimeters at bottom. Band Width: 9 millimeters at top; 3 millimeters at bottom. Weight: 56.56 grams. CONDITION: Fair. Quite substantial and well-constructed. One overlapping end of bracelet chipped off. Otherwise entirely intact and of sound integrity. Moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An intact fairly well preserved. Heavy ... moreRoman bronze bracelet circa 1st century A.D. from the Province of Judaea. The style, which was also very popular in earrings, is known as a“leech” style for obvious reasons. As you can see(with some difficulty) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series of punch dot style decorative lines running parallel with the circumference on both sides of the bracelet. The bracelet is fairly large and would fit a lady of slim to medium build, or a man of very slender build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case. The artifact exhibits some substantial porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely destroyed by corrosion, this particular piece is still intact. However it clearly spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil conditions. You can see how corrosion/oxidation has sculpted the metal into a series of shallow scallops. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the

Completely intact. Moderate to moderately-heavy wear consistent with frequent usage, modest porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally ... moreconserved. DETAIL: A nicely styled Roman bronze ring of a simple“solitaire” design. With a raised, six-sided platform bezel, of a bold size and character, which originally held a gemstone. The ring was not actually recovered with the gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz, orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” The ring is of heavy and durable one-piece construction, much like a contemporary ring. The more archaic rings produced by Roman artisans were characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime. As it would take most of a life time to wear down the raised platform bezel to the extent evidenced. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down betwe

A lyre, his instrument, rests at his side waiting for him to play beautiful music. This sculpture was cast using the lost wax method. It is signed Valli. A black marble base supports the piece. The Art of Lost Wax Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand ... morehow the process actually works. Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. These molds are the only components that are ever re-used in the casting process. All other components are re-created for each casting. The Wax Positive Once the molds are done. CONDITION: Very good! Completely intact. Very light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An especially well crafted and well preserved ancient Roman bronze ring circa 300-400 A.D. As you can see. The design is simple, but elegant. The"bezel" or center part of this ring is ... morein an elegant diamond shape. The center of this diamond-shaped bezel is a raised, sculpted diamond. So you have a raised diamond center platform atop a diamond shaped bezel…and the raised sculpted diamond shaped center is bordered by a bunch dot diamond-shaped perimeter, and as well contains a punch-dot diamond within the center of the topmost platform. So you have a diamond shaped sculpted raised center platform which both contains a punch dot diamond, and is in turn within an engraved/punch dot diamond, atop a diamond shaped bezel which also is contained within a diamond punch-dot circumferential periphery. It is a handsome design, one quite popular for the era and region. There is some light“all-over” wear evident. But nothing significant enough to merit description. Nonetheless fate has been kind to this ring. The fact that the ring evidences some degree of wear from ancient usage should not, however, be a source of disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the purchaser. Diameter: 16.10mm Size: USA: 5 ½; UK: L; France: 51 ¾; Germany: 16; Japan: 10 ½; Switzerland: 11 ¾; Weight: 3.42g The crafting and wearing of jewelry has been a unique trait exhibited by mankind from our early beginnings. Paleolithic items of adornment have been unearthed that date back 75.000-100,000 years. It is theorized that jewelry originated as a purely functional item used to fasten animal hides together allowing them to be worn as clothing. Findings suggest that jewelry making became more prevalent over 40.000 years ago as mankind migrated from Africa and the Middle East into continental Europe. Early necklaces and ... morebracelets were made from readily available materials such as bone, teeth, shells and stone strung together using twine from animal sinew or catgut. The forging of copper some 7.000 years ago allowed metal to be utilized as a material to craft jewelry. The smelting of copper and tin to make the alloy bronze heralded the advent of the Bronze Age some 5.000-6,000 years ago. It is conceivable that metal workers used their knowledge of metallurgy to craft items of adornment as well as tools and weapons. Jewelry has served(and continues to serve) three basic roles. As an ornament it attracts attention and could be used as a testament to hunting prowess or more general attributes. As an amulet holding supernatural power it protected the wearer against physical harm. Warded off evil and healed ailments. As society evolved it also became a symbol of wealth or social standing. Rings were extremely popular among the Romans. Their faith in the curative and protective powers attributed to some stones(as well as shapes and images) provided additional incentive to wear these amulets on their fingers. There were certain rules in the fashion of rings that were strictly observed. Plain bronze an
