Roman Spintria Brothel Entry Token III Bronze
Obverse: Heterosexual erotic scene Reverse: III within wreath Diameter: ~ 36 mm Weight: ~ 30 g Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 A"spintria" is a Roman coin with an erotic scene on one side and a the Roman number on the other. They seem to have been produced for only a short period. Mostly in the 1st century AD. Spintria" itself is a word bearing a different meaning in Latin but it is an entirely modern practice to apply it to these little objects. Archeologists are indeed unsure what the Romans called them. or what they used them for. But there are a number of guesses. The dominating idea circulating about these tokens is that they were part of the highly developed Roman brothel economy. Perhaps a Roman soldier got the token and then went and redeemed it at one of the local brothels. ... moreOr maybe the sexual position depicted on the token was what he had paid for. Now. As there is no evidence for these things at all, no-one could actually disprove that. However. There is no Roman mention of such things, none have been found in any place that has been identified as a"brothel" and no mention of any kind of infrastructure of the ancient"brothel industry" that this kind of internal currency would imply. So what is a more likely explanation? Almost certainly these were tokens whose main function was the numeral. Another possible explanation is that it was a gaming token. For one of the many Roman board games. All the above comes to prove that: Roman spintriae bear no erotic connotations; Roman spintriae are not sexually oriented adult material! These are just a piece of art the way ancient Romans saw it! He was reportedly afflicted with some type of disability. And his family had virtually excluded him from public office until his consulship with his nephew Caligula in AD 37. This infirmity may have saved him from the fate of many other Roman nobles during the purges of Tiberius' and Caligula's reigns; potential enemies did not see him as a serious threat to them. His very survival led to his being declared emperor(reportedly because the Praetorian Guard insisted) after Caligula's assassination. At which point he was the last adult male of his family. Despite his lack of political experience. Claudius proved to be an able administrator and a great builder of public works. His reign saw an expansion of the empire, including the conquest of Britain. He took a personal interest in the law. Presided at public trials, and issued up to 20 edicts a day; however, he was seen as vulnerable throughout his rule, particularly by the nobility. Claudius was constantly forced to shore up his position. This resulted in the deaths of many senators. Claudius also suffered setbacks in his personal li

Antique Bookends Greek Roman Columns Cast Bronze or Iron, Beautiful
A beautiful pair of antique or vintage bookends featuring Greek(or Roman) columns. The measure 7 1/4 inches wide. 4 1/3 inches tall and the base is 1 1/2 inches wide. I am sorry I don't know if they are cast iron or cast bronze or the manufacturer. Or the age. They have the original patina and there is a copper or gold color still showing on the edges. The are straight and not bent nor cracked. They are quite heavy weighing 5 pounds and 2 ounces but I can still fit them into a US Post office flat rate box. SMALL SIZE. Cost is $ 5.60 and I will put some bubble wrap around each, as much as will fit into the box. I believe they were made in the 1920's. There is a manufacturers symbol on the back but I can't make it out. Please email any questions.

A quality roman imperial lion bronze sculpture fragment from a vase. Perhaps an oinochoe(wine jug) It dates to the 3th century A.D. Dimensions cm. 6 x 3.5. It remember me so much the lion depicted on the reverse of the provincial bronze coin of Claudius II the Gothicus(268-270) struck in Sagalassos(Pisidia) As in the second picture(the auction is just for the bronze sculpture. I don't own the coin) A beautiful deep enamel green and red patina. Strong as in the first picture, with limestone deposits white shade, make this fine small sculpture still more precious! Write me please for any further question!

Roman Bronze Hand-held Mirror with Scene
Roman Bronze Hand-held Mirror with Scene measures: 210 mm/ 91 mm weight: 165 gm The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the empire reached ... moreits greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. Great grandnephew of Julius Caesar. The Praetorian Guard declared him emperor after the assassination of his nephew, Caligula. It became no longer economically practical to produce the lower value coins through the traditional method of casting. Accordingly. Pieces struck between engraved dies gradually took their place. The transition was completed ... moreby the currency reform of 211 BC, by which the AES Grave ceased altogether. After 211 BC bronze coinage was struck in fractional denominations. In a range of values(semis, triens, quadrans, sextans, and uncial) In the second half of the 2nd Century BC, bronze coinage eventually gave way to the silver denarius as the primary standard of Roman Republic Coinage. HISTORY OF THE ROMAN REPUBLIC After the deposal of the last Etruscan king. In 509-10 BC, Rome abolished her regal system and instituted a new political order, the Republic. The king was replaced by two consuls and a range of lesser magistrates, elected annually by the whole male citizen body. The consuls chose an advisory council, the Senate, at first ad hoc, later according to well-defined qualifications(of landed wealth, military and political service) The consuls led the army in times of war and had executive powers in most others matters. Army service was a duty of citizenship but it was also a privilege for which only the wealthier(who could supply their own equipment) were eligible. Soon a small group of aristocratic families. And between then and 27 BC was officially named Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. After 27 BC, he was named Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus. Because of the various names he bore, it is common to call him Octavius when referring to events between 63 and 44 BC, Octavian(or Octavianus) when referring to events between 44 and 27 BC. The young Octavius came into his inheritance after Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. Octavian ruled Rome and many of its provinces as an autocrat. Seizing consular power after the deaths of the consuls Hirtius and Pansa and having himself perpetually re-elected. The triumvirate was eventually torn apart under the competing ambitions of its rulers: Lepidus was driven into exile.
