Near Tabriz. It is relatively small and isolated, accessible by an unpaved road to the west of the Tabriz-Ahar road. Its two hundred year old mosque is filled with what would be called'KARAJEH Runners' in the trade. Karajeh carpets have a different palette and structure from the main Heriz group ... moreand generally have a loosely inserted single weft, giving the carpet an almost completely smooth back. While having repeated, medallion patterns familiar only other to the Turkmen of the northeast, Karajeh feature a drawing which is open and almost childlike, and motifs which are usually highly geometric. Red tones tending toward oranges are common secondary colors. Green is almost always present. In older pieces before 1945, dark red is the dominate color. In newer pieces, light colors on an ivory background are the dominant colors. Borders are often simply drawn. The standard Heriz medallion is used in Karajeh(Qarajeh) weaving, but some carpets and many smaller rugs are ornamented with medallions almost certainly taken from earlier Karajeh'tribal' kennareh(runners) that typically have a woolen warp and weft, finely knotted, long pile, and very intense colors. This region is known for having very luxurious wool that produces excellent carpets. The center of the Bakhtiari weaving area is now southeast of Isfahan in Shahr-Kurd. Today, there are about 200 villages in this area, which make some of the most exquisite carpets. In reference to age, the older pieces usually have a checkerboard or garden pattern decorated with trees-of-life, birds, flowers and animals, in which can be realistic and even abstract. Rug and carpet pieces in this region are known for the weavers' artistry and creative skills. KARAJEH(Qarajeh) is a village located at the northwestern extremity of the Heriz weaving area. Near Tabriz. It is relatively small and isolated, accessible by an unpaved road to the west of the Tabriz-Ahar road. Its two hundred year old mosque is filled with what would be called'KARAJEH Runners' in the trade. Karajeh carpets have a different palette and structure from the main Heriz ... moregroup and generally have a loosely inserted single weft, giving the carpet an almost completely smooth back. While having repeated, medallion patterns familiar only other to the Turkmen of the northeast, Karajeh feature a drawing which is open and almost childlike, and motifs which are usually highly geometric. Carefully preserved old fragments have probably been put together relatively recently to form this cloth. The central area was no doubt originally part of an old much worn Kashmiri style shawl and my information is that this part dates to late 19th century. There are some joins in this area but so skillfully executed it is well nigh impossible to see them with a magnifying glass. The woven border is believed to be about 100 years old and this required no joining except for the corners. The metallic braid is around 70 years old. The cloth is backed with blue/grey silky cloth. The cloth measures 27 inches x 17 inches(69cm x 43cm) before fringe.

Original Antique Indo- Persian Mughal Islamic Miniature Painting Hunting 19th C
This auction is for an original antique Indo-Persian miniature gouache painting on parchment of a traditional hunting scene. Very fine work in top condition. As you can see from the photos. The back of the parchment is covered with Arabic script and the parchment is significantly larger than the aperture of the mount at the front of the picture. I have carefully lifted one corner to have a peek and there is a wider blue border to the painting than is displayed but I have not ventured to remove the parchment in case I damage it. The painting is housed in a modern frame and someone(not me. Erm, cough) thought a horrific blue coloured mount would add to the picture. Fortunately frames and mounts are easily changed. This painting would benefit from a simple frame and an acid free cotton mount to assist in preserving it. The overall dimensions ... moreof the frame are 23.5 by 28.5 cm approx.
