The lower portion of the neck possesses a circumferential display of human figures, believed to represent the deceased’s family or ancestors. Above the ring of figures wrapping around the circumference of the neck is a depiction of a dragon. With respect to this particular specimen, the glaze shows some minor oxidation(decomposition) due to caustic alkalinity of soil in which it was buried. Though the majority of the glaze remains intact. Glossy, and smooth to touch, there are a few lightly oxidized patches where the glaze is a bit rough and chalky to the touch. CONDITION: Very good. Minor porcelain chips. There are minor chips in the porcelain glaze at the rider’s right front shoulder; to the rider’s waist, behind, center; to the back side of the horse’s right leg; at the edge of the horse’s stomach, right side, center; and at the rider’s left elbow. There is as well a scattering of minute porcelain chips throughout, and the top of the horse’s right ear is also chipped. Other than cleaning, there has been no restoration work. The minor chips could be repaired, without additional cost, if you would like our conservator to repair the chips. There remains some mild soil adhesions, small areas where soil still adheres to the statuette, despite our best efforts to clean away all soil adhesions. Of course the paint has decomposed and is powdery in those areas where the statuette was merely painted(not glazed) the rider’s head, boot, and hands. As you can see(with some difficulty, but look particularly at the middle of the bracelet and one end) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series chevrons(V” engraved into the top surface of the bracelet, done in such a manner that the point of the inverted“V” is at the very apex of the slightly crowned band, so one arm of the“V” drops to either side of the band. It was when created a fairly sophisticated and surely costly bracelet. The bracelet was not recovered entirely intact, as you can see, but originally it would have been of a reasonable good size considering the slight build of ancient Romans(the ancient population tended to be considerably smaller than contemporary populations) Originally the two ends of the bracelet would have come close to meeting one another. However the trailing ends of each side by their nature were quite thin and fairly fragile, and susceptible to loss through either breakage or corrosion. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 124 millimeters(5 inches) at top rim; 107 millimeters(4 1/3 inches) at belly; 64 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) at base. Height: 76 millimeters(3 inches) CONDITION: Excellent! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial. DETAIL: A splendid. Magnificent, and rare smaller-sized painted earthenware bowl. Completely intact, the worst blemishes are a few chips in the paint– hardly unexpected of a bowl of this age which spent a significant portion of its life buried! Apparently attributable to pre-dynastic China, these bowls are generally not recovered intact, typically they are found shattered into fragments(shards) However this particular specimen was found intact. It’s about the size of a large grapefruit, and as you can see, the painted design is mostly intact. What’s really remarkable is that it is that despite its age it is nonetheless entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little bumps and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. As well there are the normal blemishes(bumps, warts and acne pits) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware bowl) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! Although it is probable that this specimen is much older.
