Museum quality Nayarit Warrior Chieftain is classified as Pre-Columbian from 200-800AD. This Nayarit Pottery Warrior holds a spear or baton. Is seated, and has horns: a symbol of his warrior status. Most seated figures in West Mexican art represent nobility and the figure also holds a baton that represents both rulership and artillery. Nayarit figures. Such as this one, have certain recognizable characteristics. The body, clothing and ritual costume of these figures are heavily adorned with numerous tattoos, multiple body piercings, and decorative clothing. This is represented by very detailed geometric designs applied to the earthenware. Placed in a shaft tomb. Figures such as this warrior were meant to accompany the deceased in the afterlife, where they would continue to require the symbols of social position that they did when they were ... moreliving. Great figure of authentic Pre Columbian terra cota figure of what appears to be a warrior with shield. It has been noted he may be a ball player because he is in act of throwing what may be a ball. However the ball games in much of Mexico were played with a larger ball and with the shield I believe he is warrior. Throwing a rock. In any event, he is in action. Most of the similar items I've seen have the man with a sword so this is a rare form. Piece is in good condition with good manganese deposits. This is a Western Mexico piece from Nayarit culture. This auction is for a used Decorative Plate which I picked up at an Estate Sale. On the front it has Indigena Wirrarica(Huichol) and on the bottom Nayarit. Mex. On the back is El Castillo Jal Hecho En Mexico. Can't make out what the top or bottom says. There are so rough spots on the back and am not sure if it was there when it was made. 10" in diameter and has been lightly cleaned. There is wear on the bottom. It will need to be washed again since it has been boxed. Please ask all questions prior to bidding as returns are not accepted. Unless the item has been misrepresented in this description. Ancient Pre Columbian Proto Classic Nayarit Pottery Warrior Figure - 100 BC
A large and imposing ancient pre-Columbian Nayarit terracotta figure of a warrior. Dating to the Proto-Classic period, 100 BC– 250 AD. The standing male figure is shown naked. Coloured with a deep ochre pigment and wearing only a series of arm rings, prominent belt and pointed cap. Supported on enormous claw-like feet, the broad, square torso imbues him with the physical makeup of a warrior. One arm is raised brandishing a club, the other extended slightly forward and bent at the elbow, holding a small shield. The head is marked by sunken almond eyes, a prominent nose and parted lips revealing large grinding teeth. The ears and nose are pierced with multiple rings, a painted necklace is also present. West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. 300 A.D. This Ixtlan Del Rio type measures approximately 4 1/2" tall by about 3 1/2" wide, and depicts a seated warrior. Because some figures of this type are seated. Which is an impractical position for someone engaged in physical combat, some scholars suggest that these figures more likely represent shamans engaged in spiritual, rather than physical, warfare. Ethnographic data also supports this theory, since these figures are almost always facing left- the direction inhabitants of the region believe is symbolically associated with malevolent spirits or misfortune. He is shown holding a staff or club in an offensive position, ... morelooking slightly toward his left, perhaps engaged in shamanic, spiritual battle with unseen forces. His face bears a fierce expression, mouth shaped as if vocalizing or blowing. He is also wearing ear and nose ornaments, a pointed hat or helmet, and a shield on his back. Interestingly, the surface of the shield is dimensionally patterned with raised areas similar to that of a turtle shell. Such objects were created exclusively to accompany the deceased in the deep shaft and chamber tombs for which the ancient cultures of this region are known. Condition: Intact overall. With restoration to very minor loss at the lower tip of the staff and to the bottom of one foot. Some chipping and minor loss at the top of the hat. I have not been able to determine exact culture it is from but it has similarities to each of Calima. Nicoya and Nayarit so please view photos carefully for your determination.
