Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details of the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

Click the photo to view it full-size in a new window: Description I am unsure of the maker or material of this hand-carved head-shaped paperweight. It is a black stone or mineral. Which shows veins and gold interior layers when viewed under bright lighting. My guess is obsidian or black onyx which was made in Mexico in the Mayan/ Aztec style. It measures 3" high. And 2.75" in diameter. It weighs 1 pound. It does show some random light scuffs and scratches on the surface. Mostly on the top and back. There are no chips or cracks. It does have a vein of lighter yellow material which is visible on four sides- a plane that runs top to bottom and left to right. ... moreDespite its minor flaws. I am not an expert and I can not say if this is a vintage reproduction item or an authentic Mayan clay sculpture but I would guess that it is a vintage reproduction. It was purchased at auction with other items marked" Schingoethe" and is marked on a piece of paper taped to the bottom. The little man is sitting on the ground and reaching toward his butt that is painted with a red geometric design. A very large green and spotted red head of a snake extends from his belly. The snake has a tiny hole that comes out of his mouth and leads to the bowl of the pipe behind the mans head. I believe that it was part of the Schingoethe family estate. The color is consistent throughout all beads, a beautiful marbled green with some blueish undertones. My client, a native of Guatemala, is a long time(50+ years) collector of South American artifacts, and has several museum quality pieces. This piece was passed down from her father, also a collector and one time museum curator. This Is A Nice Pre-Columbian (300AD - 650AD) Mayan Head Fragment From Mexico
This is a Pre-Columbian. 300 AD- 650 AD) Mayan, Head Fragment from Mexico, measuring about 3 inch high. It is a hollow mold piece that was once part of a figure. A large parted hairdo, a large bulbous nose, two eyes, two ears with earrings, a mouth and raised symbolic facial scaring is evident. I have been buying collections of Pre-Columbian pieces from Pre-Columbian dealers. Auction houses and antique dealers, here in the United States, for more than 40 years. Mayan statue 1200 b.c.e Artifact No reserve Ancient Statue
I have here which could be an ancient looking statue. Artifact! I acquired this from a lady that collected artifacts and I bought it at her moving sale with also artifacts from the bottom of Cayuga lake, NY she found diving. I do not know what this little statue is made of but the color of it is black and has not been altered or painted since i had it, and has not been cleaned. I took anthropology in college for a couple semesters and learned a lot about ancient artifacts and bones. If this was my opinion it looks authentic.
