NICE OLD ANTIQUE ISLAMIC SUDANESE AFRICAN DAGGER NO SWORD UNUSUAL BLADE
Being offered is a nice old antique Sudanese African dagger dating to the early to middle of the 20th century. This knife seems to be a unique variant to the Hadendoa daggers that typically have a X shaped hilt with a hooked shaped knife. This example is different in that it has an I shaped handle and has a straight double edged blade that swells at the tip. Perhaps this piece originates from a neighboring tribe. The I shaped handle reminds me of grips from Morocco. The handle is wood with a nice patina. There is one age crack and there are some scuffing to the ends of the I. The top of the handle has a coin with Arabic writing serving as a washer over the peined tang. Very good blade with sharp point. The blade has pinhole pitting throughout. The scabbard is leather. Bichaq, from the famous Central Asian Islamic Emirate of Bukhara, previously Turkistan, present- day Uzbekistan. DETAILS: Slightly curved. Single- edge, sturdy steel blade cut with full length narrow fuller below the spine. A slender hilt formed of two pieces of dark brown horn. Retained by three rivets, complete with white metal ferrule and pommel. Bukhara weapons are extremely rare compared to Turkish. Indian, Persian, or Caucasian weapons. This region was not heavily populated and warriors were a very small percentage of the population. The Bukhara arms are hardly ever seen in museums, including museums in Russia.
