Antique Ice Axe Head 12" Long Signed but Maker Unknown Hand Forged
Offering an antique ice axe head that looks to be hand forged. As shown in the photos there is a maker mark but I cannot make out the name. The surface is quite weathered but the axe is still sound. The length is 12" end to end. With a 6" main blade. As shown in the close up photos, there are indications around the eye that this axe was hand forged. The weight is about 2 pounds, 14 ounces. Vintage axe Blacksmith Hand Forged Camp Hatchet Splitting Hatchet
Here we have a beautifully blacksmith forged Slovenian patterned axe head. I have hand carved a handle out of Red Oak using an axe. Spokes have, wood rasp and sandpaper. Finally, I sealed the handle with boiled linseed oil. The edge has been sharpened to a mirror polished finish. Is it not razor sharp but it is sharp; given that this is mainly a splitting hatchet. This vintage Japanese Nata ax blade was made of hand forged tempered iron 80 years ago by the master Japanese blade maker. Masahiro. Using the skills of the samurai sword maker hand forging three pieces of steel- soft steel on the outsides and hard carbon steel in the middle. You can actually see the lines of lamination in the pictures. There is a signature on the side by the blade maker, Masahiro(see picture 4) The blade is beveled from just one side for ease in sharpening as well as making a clean straight cut. Treated and shaped to my design then all smoothed and polished to reveal the patina and bit polished and sharpened so you can slice a grape! The ergonomic handle is the original Ash still nice and tight with no wobble. Sanded back, naturally coloured and treated with Beeswax for a tactile grip and a steel wedge just for more security. From the top of the axe to the end of the handle is about 12 3/4" weighs 2 pounds. This is the kind of hand tool that Boy Scouts frequently use and is great for camping trips. Hard to define object is a beautifully hand carved on a dark Walnut suggest a replicated ceremonial ax of Taino- an Arawak people who were one of the major indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. This particular carving suggest of Dominican Republic Artisan design. It measures: 15" long, the head is 4 3/4" wide x 2" in depth, and weighs 9 oz.

For auction is a an old Finnish axe head made by Billnäs ironworks. This is a 870gram head. An unknown model. This could well be of older type, it's only marking being simply BILLNÄS. The head is in good shape. Well patinated dark steel, with 85mm wide edge. There is some hits to to the poll, and to the top of the axe, but it is in good shape, not much deformation. Great Uncles on my Mother's side, and handed this artifact down, with many other Neanderthal& Cro- Magnon pieces. Through the family for decades. It is 4" long x 2-3/8" wide and came from a massive cave system in North-Eastern France. Made of a beautiful. Shiny greenish grey flint common only to this area of France. Possesses ample patina and mineralization due a point hidden away in some dark cave for so long. This piece was brought back to America in 1889 when Henry returned from his"around the world trip" when he finished his best-seller: Lakes of Killarney to the Golden Horn" 1876. Now. Since the 1920s, It is illegal to obtain any artifacts anymore, ... morelet alone exporting them. This artifact really displays Man’s new adoption of the“teardrop” shape for his projectile point and tools. It also shows some of the earliest signs of individual tapering& flaking of edges and tips ever seen on tools and/or projectile points. Prior to this. Little attention was paid to form, symmetry, and precision cutting edges. It is in as found condition. With NO modern funny business, and is in as Perfect a condition as one could ask for… being this old! But. I am retired now and expenses are expenses. And as I keep these older pieces in a safe deposit box, and never get to see them anyway, may as well This is simply a beautiful piece of human history and is one of my favorite Acheulean pieces.
