Great old trade axe. Hand forged. 5 pounds in weight. 9" wide. width across blade is 9" Handle hole is 1 3/4" by 2 1/4" Some pitting is evident. But nothing major. I think the larger indentations on the one side of the blade were meant to be there and have some kind of meaning. Perhaps it is just the makers mark, but I do not think it is pitting. Brass& Steel Hand Axe Tool with Curved Back in as shown good used condition. 12 1/2" overall. 3 3/4 widest iron; 6 7/8" long iron, no rust but some slight pitting. I have given this a coat of phosphate and paste wax finish to preserve. Nice original through tang handle with soldered copper washer; ash handle shows a very old well done screwed repair. Then the bit is polished and given a wicked edge sharper than a Fox dipped in Lemon. The ergonomically designed handle is custom made from Seasoned stock Ash with a straight end grain. Naturally coloured, treated with Teak Oil and Beeswax for a superior grip and shine then fixed with a wooden and Steel wedge. It won't slip out of your hand. The Neandertal was named after theologian Joachim Neander. Who lived nearby in Düsseldorf in the late 17th century. Neander" is a classicized form of the common German surname Neumann. In turn, Neanderthals were named after"Neander Valley" where the first Neanderthal remains were found. The term Neanderthal Man was coined in 1863 by Anglo-Irish geologist William King. From the period called"Mousterian" 150 000- 40 000 b.c. tools made of stone. Settlement sites and some parts of human skulls were found. Evidence for hunters and collectors in this period was found in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and other parts of Germany. Neanderthals are thought to have used tools of the Mousterian class. This is a great Plumb hatchet weighing 2.1 lbs. with fiberglass handle and rubber grip. It doesn't appear to have ever been used or sharpened- still has the manufacturer's original edge. It has very. Very slight rust on the cutting bevel and a little bit on underside of head-very minor. Has 99.9% original paint on head and red fiberglass part of handle. A few slight paint chips and scuffs. The rubber grip is excellent shape with several hairline and surface cracks- you have to really look for them. Bottom of handle is inscribed with"MADE IN U.S.A. and"19" Head is inscribed with"PLUMB =FAH2 =" Manufacturer sticker is still on head and reads"PLUMB Permabond Assembled" Everything is readable except for the"B" in Permabond. Also has"Patent 2,850,931" 95% of exterior sticker edge remains. ... moreI don't know the age of the hammer, but I bought it at a local auction in a lot of Norfolk& Western Railway hammers. So, I believe this hatchet was manufactured in 1982 or before, when N&W merged with Southern Railway and became Norfolk Southern Railway. This tool is in very excellent condition! Thanks for looking.

The blade has a worn marking that reads: AA&T CO, Peerless, ALL THAT THE NAME IMPLIES, GLASSPORT PA. ATCO STEEL" Most of the marking is legible in hand. This hatchet is beveled on both sides, and has claws on the poll end. The head measures 6.5" long, with 3.75" wide edge. The wood handle is tight and solid, no chips or splitting. Overall length is 14" Peerless was made by the Powell Tool Co. which joined the American Axe& Tool Co. in 1889 along with 13 other tool companies. AA&T folded for good in 1921. For sale I have an early 19th c hand forged rectangular poll bag axe with perhaps an applied steel edge. On one side the letter"F" is punched. It measures 4 and 3/4 inches long and about 2 inches at widest point. The teardrop eye measures about 1 and 1/2 inches long and about 1/2 inch wide.
