The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity by Carsten Peter Thiede. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 256 pages. Publisher: Palgrave ... morefor St. Martin’s Press; 2001) Carsten Peter Thiede’s bestseller. Eyewitness to Jesus” written with journalist Matthew d’Ancona, established him as one of the leading figures on the history and texts of the first century. Now in this controversial new book, Thiede focuses on what are perhaps the most enigmatic ancient documents ever found; the Dead Sea Scrolls. Drawing upon his own pioneering methods in restoring the scrolls, Thiede reveals that the Essene Library represented by the scrolls demonstrates that the first Christians were essentially a Jewish movement, not a radically new and fundamentally different religion. This perspective clearly has major implications. It affects both how we view the scrolls and it changes how we consider the history of first-century Christianity. Unraveling the complete history of the scrolls since their discovery in 1947. Thiede places them in the context of what has previously been unknown about the Essene community at Qumram. His identification of scroll fragments from Mark’s Gospel and Paul’s first letter to Timothy indicates that such Jewish-Christian writings were written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Moreover. It also suggests that the Essene community viewed the early Christians as fellow Jews, whose provocative ideas about the true Messiah they wanted to scrutinize. Eye-opening and stimulating, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity” reveals for the first time the fruits of much painstaking and original research. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Since their discoveries in 1947. The Dead Sea Scrolls have been a source of constant controversy. Scholars still argue over the meaning of the fragmentary texts; especially what they say ab

The Buried People: A Study of the Etruscan World by Sibylle von Cles-Reden. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 248 pages. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. Charles Scribner's Sons(1955) 248 pages. Except as noted immediately f

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Ancient Greek Terracotta Pottery Figure of Hermes - 300 BC
An ancient Greek terracotta figure of Hermes. Dating to 300– 200 BC. Staring wistfully out into the distance. The god is shown nude, the lower legs are crossed and he wears only a chlamys draped across his left shoulder. He perches on the edge of a rocky outcrop, with the left hand clinging to the side and the other clutching his distinctive leather purse. The style was almost certainly inspired by an even older original by Lysippos, a later copy of which Though a beautifully tender piece of Greek art. This wonderful little sculpture hides a deeper story. Often these figures were used as religious offerings to the gods they portrayed; as the god of travel, commerce and the secret wisdoms(amongst many others) we can only guess at what the ancient Greek who deposited this artefact was seeking from Hermes. Please note that this piece has been ... morethermoluminescence tested and found to date to the Hellenistic period. The new buyer will be provided with all relevant certification. Height: 4 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Madame Briand. Brittany, France, acquired 1960’s. Gorgeous Hand Made BLACK & WHITE GREECE GREEK POTTERY VASE w Embossed DEER
This is a recent estate purchase of a gorgeous hand make handled base from Greece. This piece is done in s semi glossy black background and features a very elaborate applied and raised pattern of a long horn type deer figure that appears to be grazing. It also offers quite an elaborate design around the bulbous area which I have shown from the underside so you can see the design easier. The coloring of this applied pattern is a slightly off white or cream color which really stands out on this piece. This vase is about 7 1/2" wide and stands about 3 3/4" high. This has no damage and no repairs. It is marked as shown on the underside which looks like it was made in 1965. Winning bid pays shipping.

Ancient Greek Tarentine Pottery Terracotta Head of a Lady - 400 BC
An ancient Greek Tarentine terracotta head of a lady. Dating to 400– 300 BC. The sculptors of ancient Taras in southern Italy had little marble or ready stone for their art. And so they used the one medium they had in abundance, clay. They produced works of such breathtaking beauty that it seems impossible to place them in the same category as other terracotta figures of the period. Here we see a lady of fashion. Her head turned slightly to one side, wearing ornate earrings and with an elaborate coiffure and headpiece. Though this figure would originally have been cast in a mould, the tender feminine features would have been finished by hand, as it would have been simply impossible to achieve this pleasing effect without the skilled hand of an expert sculptor. For an inferior example currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. ... moreHeight mounted: 5 inches. Height of head alone: 2 ¼ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Mounted on a bespoke wooden stand. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the French painter. Sculptor, film producer and writer Daniel Lander(1927– 2013) Purchased from the Gallerie G. Maspero, Paris on the 29th of July 1969. Mr. Lander. A close friend of the noted artist Jean Cocteau, was an eclectic collector of ancient art, but above all he prized beautiful depictions of the human form. A copy of a series of images of the man himself and his collection will be made available to the new purchaser upon request. Please note that this piece is only faintly visible in one such image. Greek Pottery Vase and Ash Tray 24k Gold accents
I bought these at an antique roadshow. After cleaning them up they looked very pretty. This set of 4 pieces are hand made in Greece and are lined with 24k Gold accents. I am not sure how much they might be worth. They are likely made in the last 50 years or earlier. Some minor nicks on them. But not significant enough to pitch. They have a slight blue hue to them that the pictures might not show. Gold content has not been verified, but likely not significant enough to add major value, but enough to really make them shine. 2 vases and 2 ashtrays look simply stunning and are probably worth more as a set, but I am willing to sell seperately. They have amazing detail for being hand made. Can't find any more like them anywhere thus far.

Ancient Bronze Age Greek Mycenaean Terracotta Pottery Stirrup Jar - 1200 BC
An ancient Greek Mycenaean stirrup jar. Dating to the Late Helladic III period, around 1200 BC. The stirrup jar is perhaps the most classic Mycenaean pottery type. Named for its distinctive “stirrup” shape that the handles form around the false neck. There is a charming sense of individualism about this lovely example, decorated with dashed paint strokes that sweep across the ochre slip. Indeed the whole design is wonderfully inventive, and reaches well beyond the necessity of the object. We can see how pottery vessels during this period were miniature artworks, to be lovingly shaped and decorated by the ancient artist. Examples such as this would have been used for storing olive oil. For eating, cooking and even washing. Height: 4 ⅛ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Acquired 1970’s. Hand Painted Greek Pottery Pitcher,Hanging Seal, Reclining Female Mirror & Male
For your consideration we are offering this wonderfully detailed painted Greek pottery pitcher. The red pottery is painted with a blue mottled resembling a watercolor effect background. Against the blue background is a woman in repose admiring herself gazing into a mirror. She is nude from the waist up propped up on numerous pillows. The back has a painted male head and shoulder image with an image resembling the sun with rays behind him. The edge and base of the neck and bottom is decorated with gold accent lines. The bottom of the neck has gold Greek key design painted on. This piece has a lot of detail in the painting. I am not an expert. However, the painting appears to be all hand painted. The piece has the lead? seal still attached at the neck. I could not make out the name on the seal. I am not an expert on where this piece originated ... morefrom. I am guessing from the other examples available. And the seal that this piece is from Greece. The inside is only painted down the neck. The rest of the inside is unpainted or glazed. I do not know the age of this piece. It has 2 dots where the blue paint has flaked from use or cleaning. These are located above the woman’s arm which is resting on the purple pillow. There is also an area on the face of the male face which has a mark from something rubbing against it. I do not know if this can be removed or not. The pitcher is in good condition. The design and the color are unusual and quite lovely. The pitcher measures approximately 5” wide at the widest area, and the pitcher measures approximately 7” tall at the tallest area. The pitcher measure 3” wide across the mouth at the widest area. This beauty will make a fine addition to your collection. I take great care in packaging your purchase. The cost of all packaging material and handling is included in the shipping cost. I ship priority mail whenever possible. Thanks for looking, please take a moment to browse our store to view the other treasures we have offered for your consideration.

The site of the Greek colony covers the area of fifty hectares and its fortifications form an isosceles triangle about a mile long and half a mile wide. Fine Ancient Bronze Age Greek Mycenaean Terracotta Pottery Cup - 1500 BC
An exceptional ancient Mycenaean pottery cup. Dating to 1500– 1350 BC. Surely one of the finest examples of its type; simple but superbly executed. This delicate cup is beautifully potted and painted. Composed of fine clay, sitting upon a ring base, the body broadening dramatically into a trumpet-like mouth, the inside decorated with a series of concentric bands which accentuate the flaring shape. Perfectly formed, it remarkable that this vessel could be so small, yet at the same time so refined. Every element of this exquisite little cup has been carefully thought through. The shape and decoration seem to meld together, complementing one another. The wavy bands decorating the outer body appear as stylised bands of seaweed, drifting in the ocean. We can see how the ceramic artisans of ancient Mycenae were inspired by the natural world around ... morethem. Height(to rim only) 1 ¾ inches. Maximum diameter: 3 ¾ inches. Condition: Very good. Two minute chips on rim. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Acquired 1970’s. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
