Ancient Bronze Bloom Roman Celtic
I've found a few of these blooms over a very small area. One I keep on my mantel piece. We also found a few roman and a celtic coin within 20 metres of these. Although there is no evidence of permanent activity like a kiln here. It takes a great deal of heat to melt bronze so quite a skilled job. This bloom has a deep green patination It looks very old. Vintage Brooch This lovely brooch is in the style of a traditional Celtic cross with circle behind. It is crafted in silvertone metal and the surface has an ornate‘cut out’ and embossed pattern. At the centre is a round green polished stone which resembles moss agate. But it could be glass. The reverse of the brooch is textured with fine diagonal lines. Vintage Iona Celtic cross bar brooch S & Co. Shipton Chester 1937
An unusual bar brooch in the Iona tradition. The form is an elongated Celtic cross. Decorated on the front with bosses and foliate designs while the back has Celtic knots and a beast on each short cross-bar. The casting is a little worn from age. But the designs are still visible. And emphasised by darkening of the recessed areas. The brooch measures 2 1/4 inches long and 1/2 inch across. It fastens with a straight pin on a tubular hinge and older-style C-catch. One edge. Near the hinge, has full Chester hallmarks for 1937 and the maker's mark S&Co for Shipton& Co. Further along the same edge are some mystery marks- a symbol resembling a fancy capital M or A, 925 in an oval, and a partial mark of W in a quatrefoil. Vintage style Iona Celtic pierced hearts luckenbooth brooch Celtic Arts 1990?
A very pretty piece in a variation of the traditional Scottish luckenbooth- given as a wedding gift. Then used as a protective charm on the shawl of the first baby. The basic shape of a crowned heart is pierced at the centre by three more hearts. Incised decoration includes another heart with random scrolls on one side of the border. And cross-hatching across the crown. The brooch is small- 1 1/4 inches tall and 7/8 inch across. It fastens with a short straight pin and secure rolling clasp. It has a warm overall patina and incised areas are blackened for emphasis. The back of the brooch is stamped with CA for Celtic Art Industries. And Edinburgh hallmarks. A fine example of a penannular pin. Used by many cultures from Roman to Viking for fastening loose clothing– shawls, cloaks, plaids etc. The design is very simple. Influenced by the Art Deco era. Modernist Iona Celtic luckenbooth brooch Hebridean Jewellery John Hart Jr 1984
An updated version of the traditional Scottish luckenbooth- given as a wedding gift. Then used as a protective charm on the shawl of the first baby. The intertwined hearts are asymmetric. With excellent use of negative space at the centre. The brooch is 1 3/8 inches tall and the same across. It fastens with a short straight pin and secure rolling clasp. It has a warm overall patina with minor surface scratches. Appropriate to its age. This design was first produced in the 60s by John Hart. Who was active on Iona and with Celtic Art Industries from the 1950s. His son has carried on the tradition through his company Hebridean Jewellery. The back of the brooch is stamped with the company's HJ monogram and clear Edinburgh hallmarks for 1984.
