Ancient European Bronze Age Looped Winged Flanged Axe - 1400 BC
A beautiful European copper alloy flanged axe. Dating to approximately 1400 B.C. The Axe is of usual Bronze Age form. With curved blade edge and short flanges. In antiquity, a wooden pole would have inserted under the winged flanges and would have been held in place by a thick rope, tied through the, now fragmentary, loop. The piece was originally cast from a two-part mold. And hammered into shape. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Early Europe for human habitation. They could also be used in battle and for religious purposes. As dedications. Indeed, these axes are often found in hoards throughout central Europe, where they are believed to have served a votive function. Length: 4 inches Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. It measures 2.5" tall and 2.75" wide. It is guaranteed authentic, and is in excellent condition. The piece is complete, but appears to has a small casting error where thr rounded"ball" on the back of on horse's head is missing. Otherwise, the piece is complete, and free of issues. The patina is original, and a fine mix of bronze tones, green verdegris, and oxidation. It is hand-chased around the neck, and eyes. This beautiful object which would have been worn as an amulet. The double-headed horses serving to keep watch in both directions. The horse was domesticated in the Near East from the third millennium BC, and the profusion of horse bronzes in Luristan speaks of its important place in that society. n19 decorated VIKING age mens armlet or arm ring BRONZE C8-9th
a very fine example of a Viking mans armlet or arm ring. I think this is quite early Viking era, migration period C8-9th so well over 100 years old. The condition is excellent, the bronze has no cracks and hasn't age hardened so as such is safe to handle and wear if you wanted to. it is a big diameter so for a man not a woman, the outer surface is decorated in its entirety with linework which is all visible to the naked eye. It is more unusual to find a decorated ring, most you see are plain. it has had a light clean but is not overcleaned, the surface has an even light green patina to it. I bought this in Germany earlier this year with some other Viking age items. It is museum quality, far better than the relic type pieces you see on ebay from the Baltic states.
