The Twelve Caesars by Michael Grant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 294 pages. Publisher: Scribner's(1975) ISBN:0684144026. Michael Grant ... moreis considered the greatest popularizer of ancient history of the century. A highly successful and renowned historian of the ancient world. This book is a biography of the lives of“The Twelve Caesars” the first twelve emperors of Imperial Rome. The book examines the public and private lives of Julius Caesar and the following eleven Roman Emperors. Grant investigates the myths and legends surrounding these men and explores the effects of their public careers on their private lives. If you’re a buff or serious student of Roman History, this is a“must have” CONDITION: LINE NEW. Unblemished save for modest edge and corner shelfwear to dustjacket(including a few very small(1/4 inch) Neatly mended closed edge tears along top top edge of the dustjacket(front and back) Otherwise based on the tightness of the binding, it seems likely that the book was only flipped through a few times(but never actually read through) at worst lightly read once. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound; though there's slight yellowing to the front end paper caused by the yellowing of the front dustjacket flap. Otherwise all pages are bright and clean. A handsome volume with only very mild purely cosmetic blemishes. Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PROFESSIONAL REVIEW: REVIEW: Conspiracy. Suspicion, power, corruption, poison, conquests, marauders, murders and more murders. Such is the history of Roman Empire. Then again there are copious examples from every nation's history of such dastardly acts to grab power, from Egyptians pharos, to Bourbons, to Indian Moguls, to British royalty. Human nature has changed very little in two thousand years. Now instead of murderi

Cleanliness, ... moreand sanitation) Panacea(the goddess of Universal remedy) Iaso(the goddess of recuperation from illness) Aceso(the goddess of the healing process) And Aglæa/Ægle(the goddess of beauty. Splendor, glory, magnificence, and adornment) Hygieia also played an important part in her father's cult. While her father was more directly associated with healing. She was associated with the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health. Her name is the source of the word" hygiene" She was imported by the Romans as the Goddess Valetudo. The goddess of personal health, but in time she started to be increasingly identified with the ancient Italian goddess of social welfare, Salus. History At Athens. Hygieia was the subject of a local cult since at least the 7th century BC. Athena Hygieia" was one of the cult titles given to Athena. As Plutarch recounts of the building of the Parthenon(447-432 BC) A strange accident happened in the course of building. Which showed that the goddess was not averse to the work, but was aiding and co-operating to bring it to perfection. Referens: Possibly Unpublished IMPCCLAVDIVSAVG- Radiate. Draped bust right. Spes standing left. Holding flower and raising skirt. You are bidding on the exact item pictured. Provided with a Certificate of Authenticity and Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. In ancient Roman religion. Spes was the goddess of hope. Multiple temples to Spes are known. And inscriptions indicate that she received private devotion as well as state cult. Republican Hope Columns from the Temple of Spes in the Forum Holitorium were incorporated into the San Nicola in Carcere church. During the Republic. A temple to"ancient Hope" Spes vetus) was supposed to have been located near the Praenestine Gate. 2] It was associated ... morewith events that occurred in the 5th century BC, 3] but its existence as anything except perhaps a private shrine has been doubted. 4] A well-documented temple of Spes was built by Aulus Atilius Calatinus[5] along with Fides. Provided with a Certificate of Authenticity and Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity. Gallienus( Latin: Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus Augustus; c. 218– 268) was Roman Emperor with his father Valerian from 253 to 260 and alone from 260 to 268. He ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century that nearly caused the collapse of the empire. While he won a number of military victories. He was unable to prevent the secession of important provinces. Life Rise to power The exact birth date of Gallienus ... moreis unknown. The Greek chronicler John Malalas and the Epitome de Caesaribus report that he was about 50 years old at the time of his death. Meaning he was born around 218. He was the son of emperor Valerian and Mariniana. Who may have been of senatorial rank, possibly the daughter of Egnatius Victor Marinianus. And his brother was Valerianus Minor. Inscriptions on coins connect him with Falerii in Etruria. Which may have been his birthplace; it has yielded many inscriptions relating to his mother's family, the Egnatii. 3] Gallienus married Cornelia Salonina about ten years before his accession to the throne. She was the mother of three princes: Valerian II. Who died in 258; Saloninus. Who was named co-emperor but was murdered in 260 by the army of general Postumus; and Marinianus. Who was killed in 268, shortly after his father was assassinated. When Valerian was proclaimed Emperor on 22 October 253. He asked the Senate to ratify the elevation of Gallienus to Caesar and Augustus. He was also designated Consul Ordinarius for 254. As Marcus Aurelius and his adopted brother Lucius Verus had done a century earlier. Gallienus and his father divided the Empire.

Helena Augusta or Helena of Constantinople( ca. 246/50– 18 August 330) was the consort of Emperor Constantius. And the mother of Emperor Constantine I. She is traditionally credited with finding the relics of the True Cross. Family life Helena's birthplace is not known with certainty. The sixth-century historian Procopius is the earliest authority for the statement that Helena was a native of Drepanum. In the province of Bithynia in Asia ... moreMinor. Her son Constantine renamed the city" Helenopolis" after her death in 328. Giving rise to the belief that the city was her birthplace. Although he might have done so in honor of her birthplace, Constantine probably had other reasons for doing so. The Byzantinist Cyril Mango has argued that Helenopolis was refounded to strengthen the communication network around his new capital in Constantinople. And was renamed to honor Helena, not to mark her birthplace. There is another Helenopolis, in Palestine, but its exact location is unknown. This city, and the province of Helenopontus in the Diocese of Pontus. Were probably both named after Constantine's mother. The bishop and historian Eusebius of Caesarea states that she was about 80 on her return from Palestine. Since that journey has been dated to 326–28. Helena was probably born in 248 or 250. Little is known of her early life. Fourth-century sources, following Eutropius' Breviarium. record that she came from a low background. Saint Ambrose was the first to call her a stabularia. Ancient monuments represent the Sun under the form of a man, with a youthful face, the head encircled with rays: sometimes he is mounted on a chariot drawn by winged horses. A horse was sacrified to him, on account of the great swiftness of that animal, a usage especially practiced by the Lacedemonians. The Sun was called Mithras by the Persians; Osiris by the Egyptians. DETAIL: This is a very handsome 1st century B.C. Celtic bronze lunar fetish. Whether it was originally a pendant or a brooch cannot be conclusively established. As whatever mounting device it originally possessed broke off. Brooches were rather more common, however there’s no indication that a pin was ever mounted to this lunar pagan fetish. Pendants were less common, however we do believe that it was most likely originally a pendant, based on the remains of what appears to originally have been a bail. We drilled a very tiny hole through the side of the stub of the original bail, so as to attach the contemporary wire bail you now see. If it were ever deemed desirable, the bail could be removed, and the two tiny holes plugged. It should come as no surprise detectable are the telltale signs that the pendant spent thousands of years in the soil. Porosity is fine surface pitting(oxidation. Corrosion) caused by extended burial in caustic soil. Many small ancient metal artifacts s

VERY RARE AND SCARCE ROMAN COIN supplier of all our packages is a German registered mail with tracking number of the shipment Marcus Opellius Macrinus(ca. 165- June 218) was Roman emperor for fourteen months in 217 and 218. Macrinus was the first emperor to become so without membership in the senatorial class. Macrinus was possibly of Berber descent Born in Caesarea(modern Cherchell. Algeria) in the Roman province of Mauretania to an equestrian family. Macrinus received an education which allowed him to ascend to the Roman political class. Over the years he earned a reputation as a skilled lawyer. Under the emperor Septimius Severus he became an ... moreimportant bureaucrat. Severus' successor Caracalla appointed him prefect of the Praetorian guard. While Macrinus likely enjoyed the trust of Caracalla. This may have changed when, according to tradition, he was prophesied to depose and succeed the emperor. Rumors spread regarding Macrinus' alleged desire to take the throne for himself. Given Caracalla's tendency towards murdering political opponents, Macrinus probably feared for his own safety should the emperor become aware of this prophecy. According to Dio, Caracalla had already taken the step of re-assigning members of Macrinus' staff. In the spring of 217, Caracalla was in the eastern provinces preparing a campaign against the Parthian Empire. Macrinus was among his staff. As were other members of the praetorian guard. In April, the emperor went to visit a temple of Luna near the spot of the battle of Carrhae. Accompanied only by his personal bodyguard, which included Macrinus. Events are not clear, but it is certain that Caracalla was murdered at some point on the trip(perhaps on April 8) Caracalla's body was brought back from the temple by his bodyguards. Along with the corpse of a fellow bodyguard. Th
