Gold coinage was introduced by King Croesus of Lydia in the sixth century B.C. a revolutionary concept in international trade. Gold was plentiful in Greece during the Hellenistic Age(323-30 B.C. and Greek jewelry of this period is characterized by its great variety of forms and fine workmanship. As the distillation of alcohol was not known until the fourth century BC the scents were extracted by steeping plants. Flowers or splinters of fragrant wood in oil to obtain essential oil, which would then be added to other oils or fat. The materials were placed in a piece of cloth which was wrung until the last drop of fragrance had been retrieved. Alternatively they were boiled with oil and water and the oil skimmed off. As for the oils. There was a wide choice, the most commonly used being moringa, balanos, castor oil, linseed, sesame, safflower, and, to some extent, almond and olive. According to Theophrastus, who made a thorough study of fragrant substances in an essay entitled concerning odors, balanos was the least viscous and by far the most suitable oil, followed by fresh raw olive oil and almond oil. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The First Crusade by Steven Runciman. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover: 201 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2005) When Pope Urban II rose to his feet to address the multitudes gathered before him at the Council of Clermont in 1095 A.D. His appeal was simple: let Western Christendom march to the aid of their brethren in the East. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most tremendous and romantic of Christian expeditions or the last of the barbarian invasions, they remain one of the most exciting and colorful adventure stories in history. The reasons for joining the Crusade varied widely; remittance from penance, a desire to see the Holy Places, or greed for the power and booty to be captured in the East. But the prize at the end of it all, be it spiritual or temporal, of the Holy City of Jerusalem. An army of mounted warriors. Traveling with peasants, merchants and artisans, faced a journey over hostile terrain, meeting with unforeseen antagonism, desert heat, and the constant struggle to feed and water their troops and horses. Their journey's spectacular culmination was the long siege of Jerusalem, at the end of which the Crusaders, by a brilliant tactical maneuver, broke down its defenses and poured into the city which erupted in a bloody massacre. Steven Runciman's"History of the Crusades" is justly acclaimed as the most complete and fascinating account of the historic journey to save the Holy Lands from the Infidel. This abridgement makes accessible to a wider readership one of the most compelling historical narratives. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. DETAIL: In the ancient world malachite was a famous and very popular semi-precious stone. The Egyptians seem to have been the first to mine and use malachite as early as 4000 B.C. In addition to use in the manufacture of amulets and jewelry. Malachite was ground for use as eye shadow and as pigment for tomb paintings. The application of eye shadow was believed to provide psychic protection as well. The Egyptian word for eye-palette is derived from their word for"protect. An unadorned and therefore unprotected eye was believed vulnerable to the“Evil Eye” Outlining the eyes thus gained significance beyond beautification. The act itself created a personal protective amulet drawn directly on the skin; an amulet that once applied could not be broken, lost, or stolen. Found in tombs of the pre-dynastic period, eye makeup equipment(palettes, grinders and applicators) seems to have also been essential for the afterlife. Malachite gets its name from the Greek word"Mala'khe" which refers to its green color. Following in the Egyptians' footsteps, Greeks also made jewelry and talismans from malachite to ward off evil spel

One of history’s most famous gemstones is a spinel known as the Black Prince's“Ruby” a magnificent 170-carat red spinel that currently adorns the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels. The gemstone was given to England’s Edward the Black Prince, heir to the British throne, in return for military service putting down an insurrection raised against Pedro the Cruel. King Henry V then wore the gemstone on his battle helmet during the battle of Azincourt in 1415 A.D. Not cheap silver electroplate! These are two gorgeous. High quality solid sterling silver earrings. These are high-quality earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime. Measurements: Diameter: 50mm. Weight: 2.74 grams. DETAIL: The ancient Egyptians believed that the skin of their gods was composed of gold. And their bones were thought to be of silver. When silver was introduced into Egypt, it probably was more valuable than gold(silver was rarer and more valuable than gold in many Mesoamerican cultures as well) In surviving inventories of valuables, items of silver were listed above those of gold during the Old Kingdom. Jewelry made of silver was almost always thinner than gold pieces, as indicated by the bracelets of the 4th Dynasty(about 2,500 B.C. When the price of silver finally did fall due to more readily available supplies, for at least another thousand years the price of silver was fixed at half that of gold. Several royal mummies attributable to about 1,000 B.C. were even entombed in solid silver coffins. Around 1.000 B.C. Greek Athenians began producing massive amounts silver from the Laurium mines, and would supply much of the ancient Mediterranean world with its silver for almost 1,000 years. In celebration of this heritage, here is a pair of gorgeous, solid sterling silver designer earrings. I picked these up at a trade show recently as samples for a fraction of their retail value, and am passing the savings.
