CLASSIFICATION: Roman/Moesian Terra Cotta Oil Lamp of Very Basic and Simple Style. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia(Present-Day Bulgaria) First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 78 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 66 millimeters(2 2/3 inches) Height: 24 millimeters(1 inch) CONDITION: Excellent. Typical soot stains around wick hole indicative of ancient use. Some alkaline deposits. DETAIL: This is a very nicely preserved red-colored terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moesia. Present-day Bulgaria. This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces from Pannonia(Hungary) to Moesia(Bulgaria) And even in Rome itself. Oil was filled into the cente

CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Chinese Buddhist Clay Shrine Tile. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Liao Dynasty(907-1125 A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 243 millimeters(9 3/4 inches) Width: 188 millimeters(7 1/2 inches) Thickness: 25 millimeters(1 inch) Weight: 3 pounds. 6 ounces(about 1½ kilograms) CONDITION: Exceptional. Integrity entirely intact. No significant chips or cracks. Minor surface crazing. Professionally conserved. Can be sealed upon request. DETAIL: This is a very beautiful. Intricately detailed gray clay tile from the Liao Dynasty of ancient China. These clay tiles were used to decorate the inside walls of Buddhist shrines. The depiction is somewhat reminiscent of a Hindu depiction. Of course Buddhism came to China from Hindu India, and there exist of course many parallels between the Chinese and Indian variants of Buddhism. The depiction is of eight bodhisattvas of various sizes. There is a little surface crazing and a few minute chips; but no cracks or major chips. It is constructed of very strong sintered clay produced using a very special technique often employed to produce strengthened steel. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Europe was an industry for the seafaring mariners of the 16th. 17th, and 18th centuries. Entire fleets of sailing ships plied the trade, especially the Dutch and English. However in addition to porcelain, ancient Chinese ceramics were also extremely popular in Vi

Ancient Chinese Sui / Tang Dynasty Pottery Goose Figure - 618 AD
A beautiful and distinctive ancient Chinese late Sui to early Tang Dynasty figure of a goose. Dating to approximately 581- 700 AD. This large standing goose is typical of the Tang artistic style. Depicting the animal with a high degree of animation and individuality. Models such as these(known as ming-ch'i) were a central component of Chinese burial practices and were often related to daily life. The inclusion of animal miniatures within such contexts bear witness to the importance of raising livestock in ancient China. Xunzi. Ancient Chinese Pottery Six Dynasties Zodiac Dragon Figure - 220-589AD
This fascinating clay pottery statue of a Chinese Zodiac dragon figure dates to the Six Dynasties Period(220-589AD) An era wracked by disunity, political instability and civil war. The grey earthenware piece depicts the animal in a strikingly abstract form. Sitting with its head held high, the mouth and eyes are shaped into an almost disdaining expression. The dragon would have sat alongside other figures as part of a set of twelve depicting the other animals of the zodiac. It may have resided in a domestic context though it is more likely to have been part of a mingqi collection. In ancient China the Dragon traditionally symbolized energy. Strength, and good luck. It possessed mighty and auspicious powers, particularly control over waterways, storms and floods. Indeed it was so respected that it was taken as a sigil of the Chinese Emperor. ... moreLegend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river. With the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. When the flying dragon only arrived in fifth place, the Jade Emperor was curious as to why a swift creature had failed to win. The mighty dragon explained that he had to stop and make rain to help all the people and creatures of the earth, and was therefore held back. Those born in the year of the dragon are traditionally seen as intense and powerful individuals who make great leaders. Capable of great good or great evil. They are ruled by highly potent energy and unpredictability, much like the storms under the dragons control. The'Dragon' years are: 1928. 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024. Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Pottery Fat Lady Court Figure - 740 AD
A beautiful ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty pottery figure of a lady. Dating to 740- 780 A.D. This stunning piece reflects the idealized beauty of the high Tang period. Standing facing. Her sensitively modeled face has a natural beauty and charm expressed in the delicate features. The full cheeks, carefully plucked brows and gentle smile have been finely painted, the hair in a large coif, bunched at the top. There is clarity in the treatment of the drapery, standing in flowing robes whose folds are fluently indicated, her bound feet protrude from the bottom of the gown. The surfaces of the figure seemingly melt into one another without organic separation, producing a sense of graceful carriage. This novel style. Notable for its theme of baroque plumpness, flourished during the mid eighth century. As the fashion for foreign styles increased at ... morethe cosmopolitan Tang court, tight fitting dresses gradually receded. A new style of plump, voluptuous woman dressed in flowing gowns became popular; the so called"fat lady" This shift in aesthetic tastes is thought to have been influenced by the Emperor Ming Huang's favourite concubine, Yang Guifei(719- 756) known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China and whose curvaceous physique was legendary. Produced at the culmination of a series of sculptural developments that had begun centuries earlier. The"fat lady" is one of the most iconic and desired Tang ceramic types amongst collectors. This piece is a fine example of this unique artistic style, delicate and refined, it has been modeled in the very highest artistic standards of the Tang. Condition: Very good. With some age related encrustation(as shown) head reattached, otherwise in excellent condition for an ancient figure. With remnants of exquisite floral decorations on the figure's robes. Height of figure: 14 7/8 inches. An Oxford Research Laboratory Thermoluminescence test accompanies this piece. Which scientifically dates it to the Tang Period(618- 906 A.D. Provenance: Ex. An ancient southeast Asian(Thailand) pottery bowl from the Ban Chiang culture. Dating to approximately 500 B.C. A distinctive vessel with a bold form and individualistic style. The body rises into a large and prominent flared rim. The piece is adorned with exuberant curvilinear forms, first incised and then elaborated with impressed decoration, the base decorated with a star motif. This striking earthenware vase was produced at the site of Ban Chiang. Thailand, and is typical of works attributed to its later phases. A site of remarkable social complexity, Ban Chiang is considered the most important prehistoric settlement so far discovered in southeast Asia. It marks an important stage in human cultural, social and technological evolution, presenting the earliest evidence for farming and complex metallurgy in the entire region. Its long cultural ... moresequence, size and economic status has no parallel in any other contemporary site. Representing a seminal point in the history of human development in its region. ANCIENT ROMAN GREEK ETRUSCAN POTTERY - BIRCH 1858 -2 VOLUMES with COLORED PLATES
History of Ancient Pottery” By Samuel Birch. Published in London by John Murray in 1858. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first edition of what was the first comprehensive history of ancient pottery. Including Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Etruscan, and Egyptian work. Birch's work stood as the cornerstone of the literature on ancient ceramics for decades, and although now very dated, is still an interesting and informative study. In 1910. More than half a century after its first appearance, Solon wrote of it- It would be nothing short of presumption on our part to praise a work the immense value of which is acknowledged by all students of archaeology. All we can say is that, according to the opinion of the masters of the science, Birch's general history of ancient pottery has remained, up to this day, an unassailable ... moreauthority on most of the subjects that are treated by it. It condenses the substance of many volumes of difficult access and often still more difficult interpretation; all materials have been selected with judicious discrimination and classified with clearness and accuracy. DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes. 6"x9" 415& 437 pages, 12 color plates and hundreds of text illustrations. Bound in period dark green 3/4 leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spines with raised bands, separated into five compartments with gilt titles and ancient vase decorations. CONDITION NOTES: Covers with moderate scuffing and a little wear. Some light internal soil. Still a handsome set, with tight bindings. OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Our International shipping charges are based on the weight. A most intriguing piece of ancient Chinese terracotta art. Ancient Native American Anasazi Pottery Shard Relic
Found picture of a bowl on the internet that has this exact pattern in it. A spiral shape like a maze. Or crop circle. Ancient piece of Anasazi pottery from the lip of a bowl. You can see a 1/2" edge of the finished bowl. This shard is approximately 900 to 1200 years old. Some are making pendants out of them. You can see the crudeness of the material it was made from, and the layers of the finish they used for the decoration covering of the bowl. Very interesting. It came in a Native American Arrowhead collection display case I purchased with most all of the arrowheads I have listed. It had an identification tag on the underside of it, but must have fallen off, and I cannot find it. It is fairly coarse surface, and evidently didn't stick very well. Took some of the dirty finish off with it.From what I have seen, mine is the least ... moreexpensive piece like this on Ebay. Thanks for looking.
A Large Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Sancai Pottery Camel Groom Figure - 706 AD
A large. Striking and highly decorative ancient Chinese sancai glazed terracotta camel groom. Dating to the early to mid Tang Dynasty, between 706- 755 A.D. This piece is a beautiful example of Tang ming-ch'i artistic styles. The artist has skillfully captured the inner spirit of his subject. The physically imposing figure. Representing a camel groom, is shown wearing a long Persian style coat with wide, green lapels. The robe, popular with both foreigners and Chinese alike during this period, is decorated with a rich amber and green sancai glaze. The strong, lifelike features combine a sense of both monumentality and realistic detail, whilst the drapery of the garment is beautifully modelled to assist in defining the structure of the body underneath. The lively figure is shown with his right arm raised upwards, likely gripping the reigns ... moreof the camel figure that would have accompanied him. Camel grooms would have led Bactrian camels laden with goods. Travelling along the treacherous deserts of the Silk Route. These servants were mostly foreigners, and this figure appears to depict a Turkic individual, likely from one of the nomadic tribes to China's northwest. It was during the Tang Dynasty that the Silk Route reached its golden age, and the Chinese empire welcomed foreign cultures from all across the known world. This colorful environment provided an inexhaustible source for sculptors, who, with the tools of their art, captured the physical appearance of the wide range of peoples inhabiting their cosmopolitan world. This beautiful and vibrant style. Known as sancai(three colours) is widely renowned for its use of rich glazes and colours. Sancai was produced for only a short period of time during the Tang Dynasty, under a lavish patronage that encouraged artistic sophistication. Political decline after the An Lushan Rebellion(755-763 AD) was accompanied by a deterioration of artistic vigour. As such, the small window under which sancai pieces such as this were produced represents the very highest standar
Ancient Near Eastern Chalcolithic Painted Pottery Bowl - 3400 BC
A rare and extremely well provenanced ancient Near Eastern Chalcolithic pottery bowl. Dating to between 3600- 3400 B.C. This expansive cream buff ware bowl has been hand modeled with steeply curved shoulders. A flattened circular base and a wide mouth featuring a subtly everted rim. The outer body of the vessel is decorated with a double lined band in dark purple, with a geometric design below, possibly depicting highly abstracted animals in motion. The inside is painted with a frieze of three stylized ibex, and further geometric designs that likely reflect contemporary basketry patterns. This motif, combined with the series of vertical lines that accompany it expertly creates the illusion of rotary motion. This bowl is characteristic of the luxury ceramics found at Tepe Sialk in Iran produced during the Chalcolthic(Copper) Age. Aside from ... moretheir technical excellence. The painted ornamentation of these vessels demonstrates a progressive visual wit that remains highly striking even today. Her finely carved and painted facial features lend a sense of personality, she wears her hair long but simple, without the complex sytles often seen in Han Dynasty figures. The feet schematically rendered, the upper body with insertion holes for arms. There is an imposing sense of monumentality to this piece, its overall uniformity reflecting Han society's emphasis upon political and social unity. Figures such as this were made to accompany the Han elite into the afterlife. Providing protection and acting as a display of wealth and status. In antiquity this piece would have appeared very different, dressed in beautiful robes of silk and cotton adorned with intricate ... morepatterns. With a striking. Almost abstract aesthetic, the Yangling figures are highly distinctive from a great deal of the ming-ch'i produced during the Han Dynasty and are some of the most decorative of all ancient Chinese figurative art. The. An Oxford Authentication Thermoluminescence test accompanies this piece. Which scientifically dates it to the Han dynasty. Height: 21 inches. Condition: Left leg reattached. Restoration to right leg, otherwise in excellent condition for an ancient figurine. Published: Baker. J. 1996. Seeking Immortality. p 31. Bowers Museum: Santa Ana. Ancient Chinese Pottery Tang Dynasty Dog/Dragon Zodiac Bearer - 618 AD
A rare. Facinating and endearing figure of a zodiac bearer, probably holding a dog or dragon, dating to the Tang Dynasty, 618- 907 A.D. In this wonderful depiction. The figure is shown seated, tenderly holding the small animal. The stylised features of the bearer reflect the contemporary tendencies of Buddhist art, with the large square head imitating large-scale statuary and the small mouth modeled with a gentle, subtle smile. It is ordinary in depictions of this type for the bearer to be somewhat detached from the animal they are holding, yet in this charming depiction the artist has created a genuine bond between the two, creating a poignant character. This figure would have sat alongside other figures as part of a set of twelve depicting the other animals of the zodiac. It may have resided in a domestic context though it is more likely ... moreto have been part of a ming-ch'i collection. Chinese legend has it that the Jade Emperor ordered the animals of the zodiac to race across a river. With the years on the calendar being named for each animal in the order that they arrived on the far bank. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Height: 4 1/2 inches. Provenance: Ex collection of Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Schloss. Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi(terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian. Ancient Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Pottery Guardian Figure - 500 AD
An enigmatic ancient Chinese Northern Wei terracotta figure of a Guardian. Dating to 500- 525 A.D. This figure exemplifies the expressive qualities of the early sixth century Northern Wei style. The face is highly dramatic. Showing bulging eyes, contorted eyebrows and a large mouth drawn into a grotesque mask. Wearing a plumed-helmet, buttoned tunic and boots, the individual stands ready and defiant. Holding a mace in his left hand, his body language is defensive, as if blocking the path of whomsoever stands before him. The ancient Chinese greatly feared malignant spirits seeking to encroach upon their resting place. To be ready for this impending struggle. Representational guardians were produced in order to protect the deceased. According to ancient Chinese texts, representations of fang-hsiang(sorcerers) had watched over the individual ... morelong before this period. And appears to have been amongst the most ancient of Chinese burial customs. A lively and evocative figure. This facinating artifact derives from the world renowned Schloss Collection. Height of figure: 4 3/4 inches. Condition: Restored from three large fragments. Provenance: Ex collection of Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Schloss. Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi(terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian. Rare Ancient Chinese Northern Zhou Pottery Warrior Figure - 557 AD
A wonderful and rare ancient Chinese Northern Zhou polychrome terracotta figure. Dating to approximately 557- 581 A.D. This flat backed warrior is shown standing tall with his legs set apart. Wearing a close fitting helmet and clutching an oblong shield to his chest. The fantastically preserved red and pink pigmentation remains vibrant and striking. The martial spirit of this individual is made clear by his aggressive, almost grotesque expression, suggesting his role was to ward off evil spirits. The left hand has been pierced to hold a wooden spear in antiquity, now long since perished. This extremely rare piece dates to China's Northern Zhou dynasty. A short dynasty formed in 557 AD during a turbulent era after the split of the Northern Wei and eventual demise of the Western Wei that followed. The dynasty lasted only 24 years following ... morethe incompetent rule of Emperor Xuan. As such, the distinctive and vibrant Northern Zhou terracottas are seldom encountered on the Art Market. For an example of other Northern Zhou terracotta warrior figures. See this. Height: 7 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Previously in the stock of a major London dealer and acquired over 20 years ago on the London Market. Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Pottery Duck Figure - 618 AD
A rare. Beautiful and well provenanced ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty glazed terracotta figure of a duck, dating to 618- 907 A.D. This evocative figure. Covered in a caramel glaze, has a somewhat abstract style yet maintains a wonderfully lifelike quality. The duck stands upright, its neck arched high with its wings folded producing a bold silhouette and a strong sense of movement. Models such as these(known as ming-ch'i) were a central component of Chinese burial practices and were often related to daily life. The inclusion of animal miniatures within such contexts bear witness to the importance of raising livestock in ancient China. Xunzi.
